Obvious Child (2014)
Couldn't sit through this.
This movie was not even in any way entertaining. My ex husband took it out from the library years ago for so e reason and neither of us liked it The character I hated most was her mother. She seemed snobby and was constantly fat shaming her even though she was not even close to being overweight. The main characters jokes weren't even funny so it was hard to believe she was a comedian and she had no personality. Everyone seemed to bow down to her mother and there was nothing likable about her character. Nobody in the movie was likable or entertaining but the worst character was her mother. If her mother saw her as an underachiever, well now wonder she has such low self esteem with a mom like that.
I Don't Know How She Does It (2011)
Great movie funny
Spoilers: I saw this movie I theaters years ago and again recently. As a mom and someone who worked in a school I would say it's a light hearted funny depiction of parenthood not to be taken seriously. I'm surprised at all the negative reviews. This movie was hysterical. The fact that Sarah Jessica Parker was an older mom worked as I could picture her wanting to wait till her career is established before starting a family. I like how they kept her character age close to her real age as she mentioned being a small child in the 70s. The exaggerated stay at home mom Clique was hysterical, not totally true to life, I worked in a school (stay at home moms aren't necessarily food police or modern Donna Reedes shaking their heads at working mom's and also I'm a stay at home mom) The actress that played her assistant did great with her role and transformation to being a mom. The pie scene was hysterical (also an exaggeration of real life. When I worked in a school kids and mom's didn't get shamed for what they brought if if they didn't bring something and nobody likely remembered who brought what but a comical exaggeration of how moms are critical of themselves.) The scene where her boss let her have her way when she stood up to him might have been a bit unrealistic but it gave it a happy ending, a nice feel good movie. I love the car scene where they are going on vacation as that's my husband's favorite song. Other then the judgmental stay at home moms and judgmental passive aggressive mother in law and passive agressive male competition at her job, there's no real villains in the movie. It's mainly just a light hearted comedy and family movie.
Mary Jane Harper Cried Last Night (1977)
Susan Dey played the part well
I found this movie and remembered seeing it years ago. My husbands a big Partige family fan so I decided to watch this again. This was a very different role for Susan Dey but she was believable.
This movie was sad and Deys character was terrible but somewhat realistic as theres are parents who are not fit to raise their children
Her husband/childs father who abandoned his family seemed worst then her (he was angry that their three year old got dirty running outside in the backyard after their cat? Really????) I dont think she realized she and her little one could have been better off without him had she gotten the help she needed and raised her child the right way. Maybe she should have moved on and eventually considered seeing someone else. (There was a scene where she asks him if hes seeing somebody and says she isn't, trying to woe him back when he treated her like garbage. Her mom treated her like garbage and both parents abused her as a child so maybe she was used to that )Maybe if she could have moved on and not blamed and resented her child for her ex's wrong doing, maybe she would've been a more content and better mom.
Something about the female DR I did not like. She was just doing her job to make that poor child safe and she was not wrong but she just seemed vindictive somehow whereas the social worker seemed more diplomatic, but neither of them succeeded at protecting that child.
The actress who played that child looked way older then three, she looked more like five or six. Maybe they decided to cast an older actress because they thought a three or four year old couldn't follow instructions to act out the part. Other reviewers said she was such a horribly behaved child but I did not think she was so bad. She was a handful but she was often neglected or abused prior to misbehaving. Even when she spir food out her mom was force feeding her what looked like baby rice cereal with water instead of milk in a dirty bowl and how could that be the only food she had? Strange. But she was obviously very depressed and needed help and didnt get much support from her family or therapist. All in all a sad story but in some ways possibly realistic.
The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996)
a superficial unrealistic storyline
When I was a teen I loved this film because it was a happy love story. Like a modern cyrno de bergerac or roxannee from a womens perspective. Unlike Roxanne or cyrno, where the romantic interest was initially interested in the one she was more physically attracted too, in this film, the romantic interest did not know what she looked like so you don't really know if he wouldve been attracted to her had he seen the real her from the beginning. Many women and many romantic at hearts would probably want to believe he would have liked her had he been given the chance to see what she looked like. Cynics would say the opposite maybe. As an adult seeing the movie again, I didn't like him much. He seemed shallow. What those girls did was wrong but he never let her explain. Also when she was pretending to be her friend and said she made cheese for a living (why she made that up I don't know) He kind of looked at her like she was crazy, like it should matter what she does. What did he do, made no money taking photos and worked a menial job? Uma Thurman was suppose to be the attractive one but neither of them were unattractive or gorgeous, both were adorable and pretty though. At the end he calls the friend dumb and attractive and her smart, but doesn't say anything about her looks, I guess implying he didn't think she was bad looking but maybe she just did not stand out to him, I don't know. She mentions she gained a lot of weight for collegebut she was not obese. I garofolo said she didn't like the film but I csn understand why. I think she would prefer an ending where maybe they were still friends and hugged and made up but she decided he was not for her but learned to love herself. I would be fine with her winding up with somebody at tge end but not somebody who didn't find her beautiful.
Circle of Friends (1995)
great movie
I like the ending in here much better then the book. In the book I think they implied they were just friends in the movie they got back together. Minnie driver is not gorgeous but shes talented. Chris was okay as the rich young man whose pressured to pursue a career hes not sure hes cut out for. The acting is pretty good, the storyline could be seen as boring but the acting and comedy makes it worth it. This was Ireland in the 50s so its a completely different world for some of us. Mini driver wasn't the best role for an overweight woman cause she was not so big, but other then that shes great for the part. The movie wasn't totally true to the book, in the book they met nan in college in the movie they knew her since childhood, and they made what they called confirmation but American catholics call it communion, not sure if it was a mistake or Ireland uses the word confirmation for that event. Like in the book, Benny was expected to marry the man who worked in the fathers shop who was going to take over the business. I don't know why They would rather her marry a poor shop owner who will only have money cause he was left the shop, over a doctor. So the the family might not carry on the family business when t the parents aren't around, its not like its the family name not carried, its a shop. Weird to me.
Bridesmaids (2011)
great movie
Warning this review has spoilers.I loved this this movie. Even though like most chick flicks its not all realistic, I feel the characters are familiar to most of us. Annie is attractive and smart but at a lower point in her life. She has no boyfriend or career as her business she owned as a pastry chef failed and she worked at a low paying sales job. After shes asked to be bridesmaid, she meets her friends glamorous wealthy friend Helen who married well but has bratty spoiled step children, no kids of her own. I think she met her through her fiances job.You also meet a wealthy glamorous group of friends I think she met through Helen. Helens personality might be familiar to most of us, maybe not the wealth, but the glamorous model figure type. At first i didn't like her cop boyfriend but he seemed to show a nice side and wasn't like the losers she dated. The part where everybody including Annie gets sick because Annie suggested a cheap run down looking restaurant that she could afford to eat lunch at with the girls seemed dumb as restaurants do not have to be pricey to be clean, but perhaps the point was just that it was one wrong thing after another and just bad luck. Helen takes over with planning everything and shot down every idea she has from the shower, the brides maids dresses. Some of Annies ideas are nice and reasonable. Hellens ideas were nice too and she seemed well intentioned but she was insensitive to then Annies feelings and didn't see her perspective. She also didn't seem to realize a wedding stuff such as brides dresses and bachelorett parties involve all the brides maids who may not be wiling and able to pay a lot. Bachalorett parties usually aren't expensive vacation as usually you plan something everybody can afford. Hellen planned nice things and had great taste but she was insensitive to the fact that not everyone can afford what she can. She may have always had money and might not have realized that. I felt bad when Annie had the melt down at the shower. Of course it wasn't the time and place, but her fiend was being insensitive and her extravagant wedding plans and rich group of friends got to her head so she got fed up. Its great that she had bigger and better things but she kind of lost who she was.Towards the end you find out those over the top wedding stuff Helen planned, the bride and her parents couldn't afford and it seemed some of it, including the dress Helen got her just wasn't her style, which was part of what angered Annie to begin with, she knew all that stuff wasn't her but she wanted to fit in with her new rich friends. Annie and her make up but her friend i feel doesn't really appologize the way she should as she did take Annie for granted. However Annie seemed happy she was back to the friend she knew since childhood. Melissa MC Carthys character was funny, she seemed goofy but you later realize she was confident and successful and just didn't care what anybody thought, might seem arrogant to some but possibly familiar to some of us.
Ramona and Beezus (2010)
could have been much better
I saw that movie because I read the books as a child and watched the television series (with Sarah Polly) as well, and loved both. I just wanted a little blast from the past and to just check it out. this series was adorable in some ways, but it could have been better. Celena Gomez is not a totally poor choice for an actress, but a bit older then Bezus even at her oldest in the books. Perhaps somebody like Abigail Bresin would be better. Also, they were kind of vague about the decade. The series was in the late 50s and 60s, but the movie did not modernize it nor did they make any reference to the decade. The cars and clothing looked modern, but the technology still seemed 1960s. Okay that could be left up to the reader I suppose, but I like to know what decade I am in. Additonally, they fit a bunch of parts from almost every book into one movie, so it was just like a bunch of scenes cluttered in one. The father mentioned the third daughter once, but she was born at the end of the book series, and she is not in any of the scenes, which I found confusing. When he was talking about how he was going to be an art teacher, but gave up school, he mentioned Bezus, romona and some other girls name I think. I understand changing the story a little, but cluttering everything onto one movie and changing things around just does not make sense, because the stories were so nice in the books and changing it changes the special quality of the books. All in all, not a terrible movie, the children were adorable and the acting was decent.
