Deadloch (2023)
Two words: Black Comedy
Black comedy isn't everyone's thing and I feel like a lot of the bad reviews here are from people expecting this series to be something it isn't. I agree the Eddie character is annoying in the first few episodes (but she does develop and get better) but other than that the whole thing is absolutely HILARIOUS and having just watched Episode 7 I can't wait to watch the final one next week to find out how it's all going to get tied up. Great premise, great characters and a whole lot of stereotypes pulled up and turned on their heads which may even turn out to be thought-provoking for some viewers!
There is a scene in Episode 7 involving a John Farnham song that literally had me in tears laughing (I won't spoil by saying any more!)
So, not for everyone but highly recommended if you like a black comedy.
Search Party: Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity-Jig (2021)
Generally enjoying this kidnap arc but...
How is it that Dory has been in a basement for MONTHS but her hair has stayed the same length the entire time? Plus she looks pretty clean for having only had 2 showers in that whole time...
Seems a bit of a glaring omission, unless maybe we're going to discover the whole thing is in her mind or something?
Yesterday (2019)
Quirky and fun
I chose to watch this without expecting too much as the reviews had been very mixed, but I found it to be a very watchable, enjoyable movie based on an original and quirky premise. Great to chill out and sing along with all the songs.
Himesh Patel was great in the lead role and I especially loved his reactions and facial expressions each time he discovered yet another thing that didn't exist in the alternate universe he had landed in.
Surviving Death (2021)
For believers no proof is necessary, for skeptics no proof is possible
I watched this with an open mind and found it to be overall pretty balanced in its presentation, and quite fascinating to experience these stories. I didn't feel that it was trying to convince or trick the viewer, it was simply allowing a diverse range of people to share their experiences.
It's interesting how polarised the reviews are, and illustrative of the (paraphrased) statement which I used as the title of this review. I guess I am slightly biased to the "believer" side but I also have skeptical tendencies. For someone like me this series was informative and reminded me that there is probably more to "life, the universe and everything" than we know.
**spoiler below**
The one thing I did find odd though was the presentation of little Atlas' past life experience, which gave the full name and details of the murdered child who he said was his past self, yet the murdered child's family were not interviewed or really even acknowledged. I could certainly understand them not wishing to be featured in the program, but even a statement to say that they had given their permission for their story to be part of the program would have been good. I really hope they were involved and ok with their tragedy being brought up again like this.
Isn't It Romantic (2019)
Lighthearted but with a great message
This pokes fun at all the rom-com tropes in a hilarious but never mean-spirited way. Starts a bit slow and during the first 20 min or so I was debating whether to just turn it off but then it picked uo and became thoroughly enjoyable.
