Hope's Choice (2004)
Surprisingly Good!
A few weeks back I was unable to sleep, so I turned on the TV and caught a late night run of Hope's Choice on Showtime Next.
The story was very well-crafted, especially for a student film, as it seemed to work on multiple levels. Its' approach is familiar - A young, African American man's life situation forces him to make a choice, a choice which is influenced by a variety external forces. It's getting to the character's final decision, however, that makes Hope's Choice different (and better) than other similar films.
The message was on-point, so much so that I actually got the "shivers" at the end. (That was quite a trick, considering I don't normally care for this genre.) The acting was above par with good performances all around and the script was well-thought out. These elements, combined with good execution and high production value made the film enjoyable. The fact this was done so effectively in such a short time period (less than 20 minutes) is a credit to the filmmakers.
If you have the opportunity to see it, you'll be pleasantly surprised. (I sure was!) : )
