This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006)
Brilliant and Scary
As one who works in the film business, i found this movie just one more terrifying glimpse into the politics behind censorship. the film brilliantly and very humorously stabs at the censor machine, and while some points are harder to agree to than others and occasionally waiver in their message, the overall theme comes roaring through. Brilliance, and a must see for everyone who believes in the freedom of expression and is opposed to censoring the arts. The fact that the film itself would not cater to the MPAA guidelines shows true bravery and shows some amazing bravery by those who would speak and appear on camera. Its scary how much we take for granted with movies, and how arbitrary the rules to 'protect our children" really are.
The Blood Shed (2007)
Solid campy hillbilly fun!
The amusing end credits theme song says it all, "just another backwoods, redneck, hillbilly family: this time from New jersey". Or something like that... While its true, there is no new territory covered here, it certainly has a whole helluva lotta fun re-treading what we've seen before. Alan Rowe Kelly weaves together a really amusing and "through the looking glass" view of our "heroes" the Boullion family. The gag is almost like the one used in the 1990's Brady bunch movies, where the family is just a complete anachronism, but isn't aware of it. The comedy and blood flow freely, the cast are all top notch in their respective comedy endeavors and you will never once find yourself bored. Its really great to see an Indi so embraced by critics and audiences alike, and we can only hope that it opens the door for more.
Headspace (2005)
Really Nice little film
I was expecting the usual horror on DVD fare, but was definitely surprised by this little gem. While the whole of the plot wasn't really anything new, the way it was handled was quite unique. The hero's possible brain problem/gift is a very clever way of keeping the audience guessing what is actually going on. Is it real, or is it hallucination? Is he the killer, or is it some demonic force that only his supercharged brain can perceive? FX by Jamie Kelman are top notch and go far beyond what is usually given to indie horror (his background with Rick Baker is very apparent!). The monsters themselves are a bit cheesy, but undeniably well executed, and the make-up fx are incredible (in particular Udo Kier's multi layered face ripping sequence was a remarkable achievement!). There's also a bunch of nice cameos, and some really good DVD features.
Wolf Creek (2005)
Beautiful in its simplicity
This is a grade A horror/thriller that really makes you question big studio mega movies. In watching the making of piece on the DVD, you learn this gem cost about 1.5 million. Then you have dreck like Van helsing running over 200 million. Wolf Creek brings in 24 million worldwide. certainly not mind blowing grosses, but given its cost, and superior quality, i would take the 100 wolf creeks over 1 van helsing any day. This is the kind of horror film that is made to scare you, and succeeds. A simple premise with enough behind it to make you think (the why's of the meteor, and the location of meeting in particular). Effective scares and special effects, while still never crossing the line of utmost plausibility. Brilliant job.
Haute tension (2003)
Close but no cigar...
I won't lie, 95% percent of this movie is great! Wonderfully original deaths from the man behind a great deal of Lucio Fulci's effects, a very sexy leading lady, and no nonsense, straight to the point style of story-telling, similar to old 70's films like "Don't Look in the Basement", and "Last House on the Left". Then as far too many films have tried to do since the Sixth Sense came along, it went for the twist. I won't give that twist away, but I will say it makes an otherwise solid and cohesive film riddled with plot holes. Too many to even begin to understand in fact. There were so many ways the creative forces could have still had the final outcome they wanted while not bringing more than the half the film into questionable territory as to whether or not its real. Ah well, I'll give a vague statement, and say you can save yourself and make it a great suspenseful movie by stopping the movie when the leading lady is done swinging her weapon.
