Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)
Greatest Car Movie Ever!
This movie was produced in a time when this country had all kinds of changes taking place, albeit the movie has nothing to do with those things. I remember growing up in the 70's and you either hated this movie or completely connected with it. With this in mind, I personally saw myself inside the character's of Dennis Wilson and James Taylor. Yes some will say that the movie is too pretentious and has little dialogue, but that is what makes it so real. To really understand this, you have to be involved in the car counter-culture of that era. I myself have changed through the years, but what hasn't changed is the way things used to be, and the way some people felt at that time. This movie envelopes those feelings and puts it out on film. It was kind of like we didn't know this country was changing so rapidly and one day we woke up and things were different. Take the cars for instance, the 55 looking like a C/GAS racer from the sixties and driving it across country! Try doing that nowadays with gas at 2 dollars a gallon for low-octane cheap stuff. Back then premium was 100+ and 50 cents a gallon! -On a side note- I recently attended a drag race event called the gasser reunion in Thompson Ohio last year (I grew up attending this dragstrip), and I saw an exact replica of the IL' 55 from Two Lane Blacktop.
I have a picture of myself standing next to it in T-shirt and blue jeans. Being in the military now, it makes me appreciate the times of old, when people would travel to there local hangout and talk about cars, or whatever.
What a great movie!
King of the Mountain (1981)
Good flick that takes you back
I am currently trying to find this film on vhs. If anybody knows of it, or has a copy they would like to sell. I am willing to purchase it. Please email me with the details... about the movie, I saw it about 20 years back, right after it came out, I immediately identified with it, and has stayed with me. It is a real movie, about real street racing, before the days of neon and tuners. This film makes The Fast and The Furious look like The Slow and Ridiculous. In case anybody thought Dennis Hopper plays a goofy rogue character in Speed, they need to see this one (love his beater corvette in the movie). Like all car movies it is not inept to at least a little cheesy-ness. Although I would say it is a little more realistic than most.
