Minyeo-neun goerowo (2006)
Starts out great! The last 30 minutes kills it!
The first part of the movie was cute and funny and had a good message about inner beauty. I have no idea what the writer was trying to accomplish at the end though. During the last 30 minutes of the movie, the actors stopped acting, faced the camera and started naming the writers, directors, and producers. From then on, it was nothing but dialog from earlier in the movie repeated verbatim. The dialog was well-written and made sense the first time, but was completely irrelevant and without context the second time. The acting got worse too, as the actors were obviously struggling to deal with odd turn the script had taken. This movie had so much potential and could have been great if they hadn't fizzled the ending. If it weren't for the last 30 minutes I would have given it a 9.
Hard to Hold (1984)
the movie was so-so but the soundtrack was incredible
The leading man, Rick Springfield did a good job with the lousy script he had to work with, but the casting could not have been worse for the leading lady. The actress (Janet Elliber) was ugly as dirt and looked about 15 years older than Rick, and there was nothing likable about her. She was supposed to be a mental health professional, yet she was extremely unbalanced and seemed to have a number of personality disorders. Patti Hansen gave a good performance as the jealous ex girl-friend, but her role wasn't developed enough to improve the film as a whole. Also, this movie came out before the PG-13 rating came along, so the editing is extremely choppy in places since the producers were trying to avoid an R rating. I think it definitely could have been better, and there are a few good scenes, particularly when Rick's character Jamie is performing on stage. Most of the music on the soundtrack was written and performed by Rick himself, and some of the songs like "Love Somebody" and "Don't Walk Away" are really memorable.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)
Best Start Trek series ever!
I think the characters from Deep Space Nine were much more credible than from any other Star Trek series. They are dysfunctional and they don't always get along, which is a sharp contrast to the other Star Trek characters who seem to have evolved beyond pettiness and poor decision making. Captain Picard would never have gone into his ready room and starting grumbling about how much he hated his job, but Commander Sisko, played by Avery Brooks, does this on several occasions. He is at first a reluctant commander, placing his responsibilities as a single parent above his Star Fleet career, but he ultimately grows beyond space station commander and becomes the religious icon for an entire race. Nevertheless he is the most human of all the Star Trek captains. Colm Meaney and later Michael Dorn, who crossed over from Next Generation were a tremendous asset to the program. However, I believe it is the writing that really sets this series apart from the others. I've got the whole series on DVD and it is one of my most treasured possessions.
Las vías del amor (2002)
I loved every episode!
This is my favorite novela ever! Every episode is action-packed and fast-paced. The story-line is unique and the characters are interesting. I think this is the best casting job I have ever seen on any novela. Every actor seems perfectly suited for his or her character. Jorge Salinas and Gabriel Soto are both great actors and easy on the eyes as well. Aracely Arambula is amazing as the protagonist. Daniela Romo is probably the show's best asset. Her character is strong and her performance is brilliant. My only complaint is that there seems to be a thread of racism that goes through the show. The meanest character in the novela is Elmer, who is of African descent. He is rarely referred to by name. Instead he is called "El Negro" or worse "el mono ese". This novela is very controversial. There is a lot of violence. Prostitution and organized crime are recurring themes. Although it isn't for everyone, I thought it was well-written and very memorable.
