Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1990)
The good ones weren't just for kids
And there were some REALLY good ones. The Tales of the Super Specs [(deep voice) I don't think they'll be bothering you anymore], Midnight Madness, Pinball Wizard, Magician's Assistant, Bookish Babysitter, Renegade Virus, and even the Phone Police; all of these are classics!!
The Last Broadcast (1998)
Please stop insulting Blair Witch Project with comparisons
The two movies have almost nothing in common, so stop comparing a brilliant movie to this snore-fest. And definitely don't say that BWP ripped this crap off in any way. This isn't even a found footage movie, it's a faux documentary and a cheesy one that gets progressively worse and worse until the terrible ending. Three stars because the idea, in theory, was okay, and the acting is halfway decent. But I want to take those stars away for the annoying narration and horrible second half.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
One of the GREATEST horror movies, EVER.
Maybe one of the greatest movies period, BWP is a cinematic masterpiece, easily in my top 10. If you have even the slightest bit of imagination, ignore the haters. 90 percent of those people were looking for your conventional horror movie: bs jump scares, gratuitous gore, and everything spelled out for them so they don't get the brain pain. I don't think that every indie film is great (far from it really). And I don't think a movie should get kudos just because it is original. But THIS indie film, and THIS original idea is just about perfect.
I would consider myself a huge horror movie fan, and I've seen A LOT. But few movies, if any, have legitimately terrified me like this one. I'm a grown man and I get chills when I think of Josh's agonizing cries distantly in the forest, the bundle of sticks with his teeth in them, and most of all Mike standing in the corner. Hell, even the piles of rocks surrounding their tent when they wake up is creepy. And THAT'S one of the reasons why this movie is so great. All the people saying "where the hell was the witch?????" are missing the point of this psychological gem. A witch and concrete answers would have ruined this; the beauty is in the ambiguity. YOU decide what happened. The movie gives you exactly the right amount of tools to do so.
If you still think this movie is lame, at least try your hardest to put yourself in their shoes. Just imagine being lost for days in alleged haunted woods. If that happened to you, that alone would be scary as hell. But then increasingly weird and unexplainable stuff keeps happening as you decend deeper and deeper into madness. The acting is actually terrific! Ok, I can see people getting annoyed at the high pitched irritating girl, and the up-nose crying shot is easily parodied. But everything they did was GENUINE. Hell, I'm not even that big of a fan of found footage movies, but this one actually almost makes you forget it's a movie.
Screw the marketing campaign and faux documentaries. Screw the legacy and impact on horror movies BWP has had, starting a new sub-genre. Having such an impact makes it imprortant, but not necessarily good. What makes it good is itself, alone, as just one movie that is 81 minutes of genius. I honestly just can't say enough about this movie. It's perfection.
Fast Foodies (2021)
Decent premise. Needs to lose the pretention though.
It's no secret that cooking shows have exploded over the years, so it makes sense that TruTV wants to cash in on that. And to be honest, I like the idea of more adult oriented cooking show, and I like having celebrities (except for the ones I don't like haha). But damn, I cannot stand the pretentious chefs. Jeremy is okay, but Kristen has GOT to go, and Justin is not that much better. I have always thought chefs in these shows are pretentious. I mean, people whom you refer to by their job title include Dr., Officer, Professor, annnnd.... Chef?? But Kristin takes it to another level. Apparently putting an ice cube on a hamburger patty when you grill it is the cooking tip of the century. Also, Justin acts like he can only make Japanese related dishes. Get some variety bro.
Again, good premise, could be a great show. Tweak the cooks.
Big Trick Energy (2021)
It's passable, but needs a lot of improvement
I think most people's criticism is fair, but a little extreme. Yes, they are trying to be the Jokers of magic, and yes, unfortunately they will never even sniff the amount of likeability that the Jokers have. But two of the four are likeable. And although the reactions from the public aren't the best, I definitely don't think the reactions are scripted.
As an avid fan of magic, I know how many/most of the tricks are done, so that is a negative. And Alex is the biggest magic hack of all time. His "tricks" are the worst. It's like he just read Magic for Dummies, and didn't even get that far into it.
So all in all, being a funny magic show (which, as others as said, comes off as a Jokers/Carbonaro mashup), isn't a bad idea. What they are doing is okay, they just need to do it better. Still light years better than Criss Angel or anyone else who pretends to have real powers though.
Buddy Games (2019)
Just baffalingly awful
The problem here isn't the cast, there are a few great guys. The problem here isn't the story either. I definitely don't mind watching a stupid and/or immature comedy. I love a good joke, even (especially?) a low brow one. But that's where the problem is. This movie just failed to make jokes. This movie had stupid people playing stupid games, but they never said or did anything to try to be funny. It's not that they tried jokes and they weren't funny, it's that they didn't make jokes. It was awfully strange, and painful. Oh man this movie is just so terrible. Only gained an extra star out of pity for the decent cast.
If you're in the movie like this, that's GREAT!
Just pick a different one. Netflix has a thousand.
Family Guy: You Can't Handle the Booth (2019)
Why do I always seem to have the opposite opinion??
I generally don't write reviews, but I have recently been feeling compelled to do my part in helping out shows/episodes that have a bad rap for some reason or another. Based on other reviews, I feel like some people don't like it because they don't get it. I've read that the plot and commentary get in each other's way, ruining each. But this episode is not about the on screen "plot" in any way and you don't need to be able to follow it to fully enjoy the episode, which is actually just about the commentary, with the on screen stuff just being a springboard for commentary jokes. This episode occurs after the series had jumped the shark. Seth MacFarlane and many writers had already left for the most part to work on his other projects. That being the case, I welcome a more unique episode. I do not understand how someone could love the other episodes around this time but not this one. This episode is actually BETTER because it is making the same kinds of jokes but in a different, original format. Plus, it gets super meta, which is always fun. I'm not sure if this episode was just too weird for some people or what, but I for one think its above average for a season 17 episode. Just be glad they're even still making this show and be happy with what you get.
Saved by the Bell (2020)
Strong start, then up and down.
The first episode had a lot of great callbacks and some good jokes! They even tackled the social issues well. The trans girl is so adorable! But the next few episodes were a little rough before coming back better than ever. The few not so great episodes went way too far with the social issues. They made the minorities complain and get offended way too much and made EVERYTHING about race to the point where they began to be unlikeable. As a biracial person myself, I thought they were doing minorities a disservice by making them so petty and weak. Apparently it's offensive to give the new student a break and excuse her from a summer reading assignment? But as everyone started getting along the show really picked up. The theme song is awful though, a terrible "modern hip" cover of a classic. Oh, also, don't fall for the bs Selena Gomez fans are saying. The show IN NO WAY bullied or made fun of her. Two students just argued over who donated their kidney to her. That's it. Selena and her fans are actually a perfect example of the overreacting that is making us look ridiculous and prevents people from taking our real complaints seriously. But anyway, definitely a decent show, just wish Zack was in it more, and would love to see a cameo from Belding.
B Positive (2020)
Not offensive in the slightest way
Having a comedy centered around someone who needs a kidney is NOT the same thing as making fun of someone who needs a kidney. The character is a strong, smart guy who is not made fun of at all. If anything, the show is doing a good thing by bringing attention to those who need transplants and showing the good in the world by having someone volunteer to give theirs. It's heartwarming, not offensive. Get a life people and stop getting offended by every little thing. Mom seems to be a popular show, which is about recovering alcoholics and a crippled man. I guess that show is disgusting to you people too.
Top Secret Videos (2020)
Completely Unnecessary
Yes, all most people need are the videos, and just the videos. But if you WANT commentary a la Mystery Science Theatre, then you won't get much better than this. The jokes actually did make me laugh out loud, because Ron Funchess and Brian Poseihn (sp?) are actually funny people. But you and I would both be better off just watching Ron Funchess stand-up stuff. This show is like watching videos with friends who make funny comments. That's it. Not enough for a tv show, but Tosh has been getting away with it for years.
