The Legend of Korra: Welcome to Republic City (2012)
New Avatar, New Metropolis
The wait is finally over! Korra, from the Southern Water Tribe is the new Avatar and is ready to take on the world! Set in Republic City, sort of a 1920s New York City type place with Asian culture/influence, Korra discovers the world is not what she thought it was and wants to help ease tensions between Benders and Non-Benders.
Tenzin, the son and Air-Bender of Aang is introduced as a serious, but kind man along with his pregnant wife and three children, who provide us with some well-needed laughs in this more serious version of Avatar.
Korra gets herself into trouble and resists arrest, showing her naivety, but we get to see Lin Bei Fong, the daughter of Toph as a result.
The modern city with automobiles was a turnoff for me as it was to others I know, but after watching a few episodes, I've learned to accept this new environment even though it lacks in the mysticism that made the original Avatar so great.
Overall, I score this episode a 6/10. It didn't "wow" me like I hoped and the humor was lacking, but the artistry is terrific and the story-telling is adequate. Rock-on, Korra, Rock-on!
The Legend of Korra: The Spirit of Competition (2012)
Korra: A Lesson in Cheating
This post contains only minor spoilers, but if you haven't seen episode 5 The Spirit of Competition from the series the Legend of Korra then maybe you should stop reading now! At the time this review is posted, 6 episodes have aired. This episode is easily my least favorite and here's why: A few of the main characters cheat on their girlfriends/date interest, which caused me to dislike two main characters. This episode couldn't decide if it was supposed to be serious or comical so both were mingled together giving it an unbalanced feel. The main storyline with Amon is completely ignored, so this episode is the very definition of a Filler. Although the episode had some moments of humor, you could skip it and not miss anything from the main story.
Just so you know, overall I'm loving The Legend of Korra but this episode was the exception. I would skip it unless you're really into Shipping characters.
