Who Am I - Kein System ist sicher (2014)
A great surprise from German cinematography
There's no denying German cinematography has not been in it's prime in the last 10-20 years, but Who Am I makes a great case for it's revival.
May contain Spoilers!
It's a movie that gets you thinking about more than it's plot, it gets your attention right from the beginning and doesn't let go. The story-line progression is well-paced, maybe a tad too fast and you might regret they don't exploit the abundant actor chemistry. It stands out by being a movie about rebellion and personal perception, how we each choose to see something we want to see.
The movie I feel is a big tribute to Fight Club, it has the same nihilist and rebellious vibe, especially when Max enters the scene. There's even a scene where police enter WhoAmI's room and there are posters of Fight Club. Also as the plot progresses, there's the constant feeling some characters may not be as real as others.
But the ending just blows your mind, combine the Prestige with Fight Club and you got yourself one big mind-f%%k. Excellent movie, I'd totally recommend it to anyone. Smart, fast-paced, well-aimed, great message. 10/10, watch it NOW!
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Birdman (or The Expected Meaning of Nothing)
Warning, may contain SPOILERS!
Let me start off by saying this movie had huge publicity and a certain style attached to it. Just by glancing at the poster I felt a certain air of Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski. It felt good, and I was all to happy to see it on DVD. But my mania didn't last for long.
The next thing that is easily noticeable is the star-studded line-up of this movie; Keaton, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts to name a few. I'm a fan of all these actors and again, I was glad to see all of them on the same set. But, as it has been proved time and time again, having an all-star roster of actors doesn't result in a good movie(some exceptions).
But then, it all goes downhill. After about 40 or so minutes into the movie, I'm left wondering what's this movie really about. There is little to none meaningful character interaction. Sometimes, characters will talk to one another about their past without any insight into the present, or to deepen a bond. Mostly random stuff, just so you can hear their voices. Next we go to the soundtrack of this movie; again, mostly random noises here and there(it has kind of a fetish with that badum-tsss drum-sound). At one point into Birdman's delusions he sees a drummer randomly doing his thing in the backstage. I just can't help but feel this movie was made at random, just to glorify an imagery and style somewhat similar to Rope, in that it gives you a slight impression the action is continuous and uninterrupted. I don't know how this can be praised as the best movie of 2014 when clearly it's the product of a bored Director and some investor with too much money in their pocket.
I'll give 3/10 starts to this just because Edward Norton plays himself in a way, with all the rumors going around that he is a very difficult actor to work with.
Fury (2014)
Fury stars off great, but quickly loses momentum
I'm amazed at how Hollywod directors keep insulting the intelligence of movie-goers, by doing this kind of ww-2 movies and claiming to be realistic. Don't get me wrong, the scenery and props were top-notch, real shermans and tiger were used in the film, so it has a slick image and production. The acting is also decent, but here it all goes downhill.
The epic adventures of Brad Pitt begins in Germany, soon to surrender, ready to save the world. They quickly introduce a lot of characters that don't contribute to any of the already lacking plot and die just as fast.
Early on, they charge at some German PAK anti-tank guns, in a fight that you can pass as being plausible. Next, they clear a town where again, this time, the PAK crew misses from less than 200m and having the surprise advantage. Moving on...
Now we experience some boring scenes, just so that the characters develop a little emotion and morals, even the soft-hearted kid begins to obsess over killing Germans.
We soon get dragged into a tank battle that starts off promising, with 4 Shermans pitted against a Tiger. Looks like the Allies have slight advantage. Yet, again, for the sake of grief and suffering, we see some epic John Woo tank combat, 3 secondary Shermans take the fall and our heroes emerge victorious after missing about 3-4 shots each.(As a side note, Tiger's armor was all-round the same; 80mm).
Now it gets insulting. The last fight is basically a Call of Duty 2 mission made to movie, easy difficulty, Germans just swarm a disabled tank just to get crippled by heavy losses and retarded path-finding. This scene might be called "so bad it's good", in that it often produces laughter in the viewer.
tl;dr Watch if you want to see the greatest piece of WW2 action- movie ever.
