Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018)
An Excellent Vigilante Thriller
This is a uber realistic Vigilante thriller with a simple idea.. an idea that's been played with for decades of Indian and international cinema, but never executed with this much brilliance and simplicity..
The plot is simple, and yet not uninteresting.. while it begins with a rather Utopian idea, it goes on to take shape well..
The direction, acting performances and background score are top-notch, with screenplay falling JUST short of being excellent..
Could have been tighter-knit, but very well done overall !
Definitely watch this for the way it's been made, and give it the recognition it deserves !
Hannah Gadsby: Nanette (2018)
Powerful, Cheeky
This is a powerful narrative on anger, humanity and cheeky jokes on society the way it is today.
This set will get you thinking, and will pull you out of any misconceptions of what might seem 'right'..
This is more a powerful message than anything else.. Well done, Hannah.. You will inspire a lot young women with this.
Phamous (2018)
Sometimes, good actors have bills to pay too.
This movie is all about getting some very good actors together to portray a 'typical' mid-west-indian rural power-struggle and the nature of the humans involved. Guns, village politics, raja-sahibs and Choris form the crux of this story.
Bad direction lets down a fine cast of actors and their efforts.
It just goes to show that excellent actors who aren't often seen in mainstream movies have bills to pay too..
Watch it if you have time to spare. Kay Kay Menon, Pankaj Tripathi and Jimmy Shergill are as good as always.
High Jack (2018)
Not to be taken too seriously.
An attempt at being funny. That's all this movie is.
Yes, the premise is rather funny, but the execution is poor, sadly.
What could have been a long sketch-type comedy has been taken too seriously by the director, leading to gaping holes in direction, screenplay, set accuracy and even continuity, at times.
But if you're a fan of Sumeet Vyas and Kumud Mishra for their work with TVF, give it a watch, because they're the best part of this production.
Not unbearable in any sense, just not to be taken seriously.
Rahul Subramanian: Kal Main Udega (2018)
Pointlessly Funny !
Rahul's special is full of literally unconnected premises, unrelated topics and easy-to-follow narratives.
All this, in addition to some brilliant call-backs and top quality relatability, makes this one kick-ass special with absolutely no point to it.
Just watch it for what it is. Nonsense jokes that are just funny for no reason.
Don't expect anything deep, serious or any kind of message.
It's a show about everything and nothing.
Azeem Banatwalla: Cometh the Hour (2017)
Quality Comedy, Honest narrative
Azeem has always been the most sensible and Intellectual comic in the EIC collective .
This special has a lot of honest and relatable content. The jokes are intelligent, while not being too deep. The narrative is highly engaging, yet light hearted.
Azeem touches on topics such as indian society, family dynamics and politics in a way everybody understands and follows.
Probably one of the best specials to come from the young brigade of Indian Comics.
Nimir (2018)
What a Simple, Beautiful piece of art !
This film is just simple. Simple, funny, and beautiful !
The background music couldn't have been more perfect, and the cinematography is just so colorful and vibrant ! The dialogues are extremely simply, subtly funny and non-pompous.
The cast execute their roles with aplomb, bringing the simple characters to life in a very amusing and appealing way !
Watch it for the direction, the subtle comedy, the actors and the music !
Humble Politician Nograj (2018)
Strictly for Danish Sait fans
For a debutante, Danish has done really well, portraying a funny but corrupt Kannada Politician. the strong supporting cast of Stand-up comedians Vamsi and Sumukhi, aided by Shruti, Roger and Vijay chendoor have done well to complete the package.
The movie is good for fans of Danish Sait's usual performances as the stereotypical Bangalore Kannadiga with their hopelessly bad command over the English language and grammar. It isn't for people expecting a ground-breaking political comedy.
Definitely worth a one-time watch, especially for the Funnier-in-real-life cast and the bold statements the film tries to make !
Urvi (2017)
Rating might seem rather high, but for good reason
After tons of absolute garbage from the Kannada film industry over the last decade, Urvi joins a league of sensible, watchable and enjoyable movies from sandalwood, joining the likes of kirik party, ulidavaru kandanthe, U turn, Rangi Tharanga, etc.
The cinematography and direction is laudable and well done ! the story is something Bollywood and Kollywood, the nation's most successful and respected industries have already experimented with. What makes Urvi a great film is the sheer brilliance of Achyuth Kumar and the lead female trio. Brilliant performances, slightly 'inspired' (literally) background scores and well thought-out camera angles make this movie a delight to watch.
A much needed redeemer of the hitherto useless kannada movie industry.
Talvar (2015)
An eye-opening thriller, extremely well executed murder mystery
A wonderfully conceptualized murder mystery putting an eye-opening twist on the careless investigative methods of some Indian police personnel. Ashwin Kumar (Played by Irrfan Khan) is called in to investigate as part of the central investigation bureau, with the politics in bureaucracy obstructing justice to the verge of ridiculing every theory on the sensational double-murder case of noida. An absolute masterpiece by Meghna Gulzar, with stellar performances by every cast member.
