As Above, So Below (2014)
Excellent-Much better than I expected
I chose this flick thinking it was a first-person version of The Descent, and assumed it'd be full of death and weird creatures throughout. Boy, was I wrong! It was completely different than I expected, and I liked it even more!
All of the characters are brought to life with incredible acting, and I felt all types of emotions from their experience in this thrilling horror. I even got to the point where I had certain characters I PRAYED wouldn't die, and this film put me on an emotional roller coaster nearly killing off my favorite guy. George And Scarlett's relationship grew closer as their lives became more in danger, and I loved that. Of course, the whole time I thought "They're going to kill him off-I know it!" and it was a nail-biter watching George's near death when Scarlett practically left him and Zed to die.
I'm normally not one to shy away from "scary scenes" but there were a couple of moments I cringed and looked away, especially watching this after dark, and I can say that this film gave me the minimal jump scare, the excitement, the mystery, and the entertainment I was looking for.
I'd give it 10/10 except I'm not the biggest fan of POV movies with the shaky, first person camera. This is one of the only ones I could stand! Normally I'd get a headache and turn it off!
Sheltered (2010)
Surprisingly fantastic!
I'm the ultimate horror movie buff. I bought this film in a 4-film movie pack, so I wasn't expecting much. It was actually good though! The acting was solid, the blood was realistic, and the storyline was fun. At first I was confused about the voices and little visions, but the wrapped it up nicely. My biggest problem though... (*spoilers!*) At the end, when Joey had lost a lot of blood and he was holding the gun, Billy appeared out of nowhere and stabbed him with a hook. My reaction: WHAT?! Billy was CLEARLY shot in the heart by Joey earlier. He should've been dead! Yet somehow he lives and is shown holding his dead brother while Jen escapes. Maybe the writers didn't notice this? ... Actually I'm pretty happy with it, because the actor who played Billy was extremely cute, so I may be biased. :) Overall, a great thriller with some good bloody scenes and a talented, attractive cast. What more could you want?
Playback (2012)
Good horror thriller!
I'm a humongous horror fan. Hostel and Saw are amazing. So when I saw this at family video, I thought why not? I absolutely love Johnny Pacar, so I knew it had to be decent, right?
Right I was! The acting is solid, the gore is realistic, and the plot twists are believable. I read all the reviews beforehand and expected a stinker, but do NOT read most of the reviews. They're either making fun or they were expecting something else.
Yes, there are plot holes. Yes, the ending is predictable. But it's fun, it made me jump a couple times, and the gore doesn't look ridiculously fake like most B movies!
Will I watch it again? Heck yeah! Will I buy it? Possibly. Do I recommend it? Absolutely.
