The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (1955)
Exactly what I was looking for.
Everyone else in this review section must have been taking a break from their Transformer and Fast and Furious movies to check out this film. What were they expecting?
Here's what I was looking for: fun, enjoyable 50s film with interesting character actors, beautiful black and white photography, a great soundtrack, and an awesome cheesy monster suit, just how I like it.
I'm so sick of modern films and how boringly same-y they are. Watching movies like this take me back to another time when movies were fun, budgets were lower, creativity abounded, and rubber suits were fun.
So turn off your brain, and ignore the rest of the reviews in this section if you want a fun time watching a classic B-monster film. Don't be negative and enjoy the film for what it is.
La momia azteca contra el robot humano (1958)
You people need to lighten up.
This film suffers from what I call the "MST3K curse". If you'll notice, every single movie that has appeared on that show has a terrible rating on IMDb. Most of them don't deserve the rating, and simply have them because they have higher exposure due to that program.
This film (and the others in the series, yes this is a trilogy for those MST watchers) are nothing but one word: FUN. Where else are you going to see an awesome Robot created by a crazy scientist gone mad named the Bat fight a centuries old Mummy? Not in any marvel movie or anything like that. I'm sick of people who don't know how to turn their minds off, go back into the past and enjoy themselves. I love this film and I always will.
White Zombie (1932)
Excellent Lugosi Classic. You can't go wrong.
What is the matter with some of these reviews? I'll never understand these modern audiences who watch these films. This movie is a nightmare unfolding before your very eyes. As soon as you hear those jungle drums, you know that you are entering a dark world, and you constantly have the feeling that what you are watching is dangerous (probably due to its precode status). I love the Universal horror films and for me this one stands right up with them as being truly terrifying. Lugosi is the master of his powers here, being given much more to do as the wonderfully named "Murder" Legendre than he was given as Dracula or Dr. Mirakle. Some on here have said this would have worked better as a silent film. I love silent movies but White Zombie as a silent would have deprived us of the excellent dialogue that is spoken as only Lugosi could have said it. I love this film and it gives me just as many chills as it did the first time I saw it. If you are looking for something with a slow burn, amazing visuals, and Lugosi at his best - look no further than White Zombie.
The Hideous Sun Demon (1958)
So much Monsterific fun!
I simply cannot believe this movie has such a low rating. I love everything about this movie, from the monster design to the mood and the dark noiresque atmosphere. You really feel for Robert Clarke's character. You all need to lighten up and relax. Sit back and enjoy this fun movie for what it is.
Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)
My argument for "Manos"....
"Manos: The Hands of Fate" is one of the greatest, and most maligned films of all time.
As an avid B-movie and Z-movie fan, "Manos: the Hands of Fate" is the holy grail. Never before and probably never again will there ever be a film as ineptly "bad" as "Manos". Literally everything about the film, when judging by normal film standards, is done wrong. But you already know this. It's safe to say that if you are looking at this review, you know "Manos" well and are completely aware of the film and the situations in which it was made. However, I am arguing for the value of this film.
While I am certainly biased because I am a fan of this film and have seen it dozens of times, this film is a great example of what movies are supposed to do. Like it or not, this is one of the most entertaining films of all time. I think just about anyone who has seen this film has laughed at least once or twice during the viewing, especially if you are viewing it with friends or even better in a theater full of people. The mistakes are glaring and the scenes become so iconic that they stay in your head forever. Whether it be the first time we meet Torgo, the Master's wives fighting in the sand, or the epic (if you can call it that) finale with an unhappy ending (rare for a B or Z movie of the time), "Manos" is a film you will remember. Sure, it is "terrible" but with enough viewings, it becomes an endearing film. And these days, with most of the trash coming out of Hollywood being passed as "entertainment", a little bit of cheese and a little less seriousness is something that we could use.
