Triangle of Sadness (2022)
Nearly amazing.
It began with a very clever bit of dialogue, that took a widespread debate further than I've seen it represented on screen, and well into the depths of reflective reality. Which really got me excited from the beginning.
The themes approached, and the manner in which they are, is bound to split hairs - but good art should - and I personally enjoyed both. It really is worth watching, and the writer is striving to present original, yet relevant material. But it is so frustratingly close to being a wonderful piece of work. The flaws being the following: most obviously, it was too long, 2.5hrs meant that there was some sag, and most of that I found to be in the middle section of the film - hello unnecessarily long sick scene. Secondly, the pirates attack on the boat was handily badly (with regards to realism and its effect on the narrative). And finally...
The final shot! Gaaah, why work so hard to turn gender and class politics on their head, only to end with the handsome privileged white male running through the jungle attempting to be the hero?
Dave (2020)
Good premise with a huge flaw
I enjoyed the first season, particularly when we actually got to see lil Dicky rap, because he is very good at that. The storyline was also compelling enough, to watch a fish out of water grow his feet on land.
However, the huge flaw in this series - which becomes particularly apparent in season 2 - is that, for me at least, the main character inspires no empathy at all. He just isn't likeable, he is self-centred, privileged, and narcissistic. I know that is kind of the point, but when you combine it with him being a bit whiny, it just becomes annoying. They spend a lot of time discussing how he uses comedy as a defence mechanism, but by season 2 he isn't at all funny, if he was, that would be at least one redeemable quality and I might like him a bit more.
It also feels like a knock-off Atlanta at times, they even have pretty identical end credits. And while all work deserves to be viewed for its own merits, that unfortunately draws a comparison in my mind, one which leaves Atlanta as a clear front runner I'm afraid.
Freight (2010)
Incredibly bad performances
I might of given this film 3 stars, we're it not for Danny Midwinter, who, amongst a plethora of terrible performances, gives one of the most laughable shows of acting I have ever seen in my life.
Sex/Life (2021)
How did this get made?
Genuinely one of the worst shows I've ever seen.
Its frustrating that there are so many talented writers out there sitting on the shelf, and Netflix decide to give this a platform.
