Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (2023)
Silly, dumb, and hilarious for it
The great thing about this movie is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. That allows it to be as funny as it is. The plot is mediocre, but it very clearly doesn't try to be anything more. The delivery of the material is the nuts and bolts of the movie. There is a clinic of humor that was put on, here. The best comparison I could make is like a Dirty Work for people that were born after Dirty Work was released. It's not limited to that crowd, though. I'm in my 40's and loved it. It won't win awards, but I'll likely watch it again with my older kids because I'll laugh a second time though, as well. The main characters play their roles perfectly and nail their deliveries. I highly recommend if you want to turn your brain off and laugh a lot for 90 minutes.
The Flash (2023)
Sure the CGI is weak at points, but I don't get the hate
The writing in this movie is fantastic. It's funny, even hilarious, in all the right parts. The plot has the very easy prospect of being too confusing, but the execution prevents that and makes it cohesive and keeps you interested.
Sure, Ezra Miller has real life issues, but I don't care. He is great as Barry Allen. The dual Barry's partnership was pretty fun. Michael Keaton steals the screen whenever he is on there and I felt downright giddy at all of his meta references.
Really, the only downfall is the quality of the CGI. At some parts it's REAL bad. Like, removal of Henry Cavil's mustache bad. I can't fathom why that would be the case when a movie had a budget like this.
I don't get why this movie got so much hate. I enjoyed it a lot. It was clever and fun.
The Crowded Room (2023)
Title gives it away
When making a mystery/thriller where the end is supposed to be a surprise, maybe don't give away the twist by citing the source material, which is named "The Minds of Billy Milligan," in the opening credits?
Admittedly, I didn't pay attention to that until the third episode, and it became pretty clear what was happening. Not that the writers did the best job of masking it, anyway.
Tom Holland was good in this. He does a good job with the character. Levon Hawke stood out as someone who looks to have a bright future. Amanda Seyfried was bland and an obvious narrative device. Don't blame the actress, though. The part wasn't written well.
Outside of the show spoiling it's own surprise twist, it's pretty well done. I wish I could rate it higher, but that just really did it for me.
Inheritance (2020)
I can't believe someone greenlit this
The story is ludicrous. It makes no sense whatsoever. Why keep Pegg alive? The motivation for the plot is weak at best. How did Warburton get away with making Pegg disappear in the first place? If he can make him disappear, why not kill him. The reason given is super weak. Then, why wouldn't Pegg just take the money and run at the end? He wanted to make them suffer publicly? Maybe, but lame.
The continuity is lacking and the directing of weird. There isn't much back story, even at the end when all is revealed. None of the characters are relatable, likeable, or sympathetic.
The only redeeming element is Simon Pegg's acting, which is stellar. It's a buoy in an ocean of crap.
Skip this garbage.
Zhou (2022)
Atrocious Dialogue
I don't know if it's the translation or the original dialogue is subpar, but it's BAD. The voice actors are terrible and often get the emotion wrong. I couldn't even finish it.
Russian Doll (2019)
Season 1 is spectacular. Season 2 is super weak.
This show probably should've just been a limited series. Season 1 was terrific. The perfect amount of humor and mystery. Great writing and great acting.
The quality falls off a cliff with season 2. I appreciate that the writers didn't want to recycle the same idea, I really do. The result is weak and convoluted. This just proves the point more that it should've been a one and done. The acting is over the top and obnoxious. Alan's story is the only redeemable aspect of this season.
