The Mother (2023)
Too much of the plot depends on the kid being dumb
It's always a sign of a weak screenplay when the incidence that repeatedly push the plot forward or create tension are the result of a character being stupid over and over again. The daughter Zoe has an absolutely flat character arc, and by the end of the movie you were like feeling no more love for this mother and child then you did at the beginning.
Even the action can't really rescue this mediocre movie. None of it feels visceral enough. The mother character who is supposed to be this bad ass sniper doesn't really use it to her advantage very much.
As an actress, Jennifer Lopez is fantastic in a broad range of genres, but this one just falls flat.
Blood Relatives (2022)
From human to vampire to....Dad?
This is the Jewish Vampire Dad family movie you didn't know you needed. It's a film with a lot of heart, laughs, a healthy splattering of gore, and one ultimate truth; there's nothing more transformational than becoming a Dad.
Noah Segan's directorial debut does what his buddy Rian Johnson's movie "Looper" did with Time Travel. He manages to do something refreshingly new in a very well worn genre.
Blood Relatives is a remarkably charming film that had me at "Oy Vey" and never let go.
The casting is perfect. Victoria Moroles as Jane is delightful and there is a particularly brilliant turn by Josh Ruben as a "familiar" character.
I've watched this twice and hope the universe Segan has created has room for more stories.
Love, Guaranteed (2020)
Utter lack of chemistry between the leads
This formulaic rom-com might have worked if the two leads had an iota of chemistry but they do not.
