The Suicide Squad (2021)
So much better than the first one
Undoubtedly the strangest yet one of the most fun movies I have seen. It shouldn't work, but it does and it's absolutely fantastic. Hope Weasel gets his own TV series tbh.
Black Widow (2021)
It's pretty good
I went and saw this with my girlfriend. She felt that it was incredible, I'm a bit more on the fence. I disagree with people giving it 1 star reviews, as it really isn't all that bad. Even the weakest links in the MCU (The Dark World, Iron Man 2, Captain Marvel) are much better than 1 star and this is leaps ahead of them. Even if its the worst of the MCU movies, it still deserves at least a 5/10.
Let's break this down into 2 main categories, the good and the bad.
Good
- Pugh is incredible and so damn likeable as Yelena, if Marvel want to make her the new Black Widow moving forward, absolutely no complaints here.
- The opening 2 acts are really well done, especially the first 15 minutes and the opening credits. It started off great.
- The soundtrack is excellent.
- The action is fun, Marvel movies are designed to be enjoyable popcorn action movies and this certainly delivered.
The Bad
- Taskmaster. I actually wasn't mad about the gender swap, Taskmaster doesn't need to be a bloke to be as effective as he is in the comics. My problem is Taskmaster is a fantastic villain in the comics, and unfortunately wasn't done justice with how she was written.
- The 3rd act has some pretty below par CGI, and honestly just feels a bit weak compared to the tone the opening act set.
-Johanson doesn't really get to star here. Black Widow deserved her own movie half a decade ago and thats probably when this movie should have come out.
Overall, this is a good, if forgettable entry into the MCU. I'm glad Johanson finally got a Widow movie and it was about what was expected from Marvel. It's just awesome to be back at the cinemas again and this was a pretty good first movie back.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
It's time for change
When the first episode of season 1 came out, I was a little sceptical. Star Wars seemed less about creating good stories and more about purely putting the movies out to make Disney some money. Season 1 was phenomenal, looked like the times were changing, but again the movies just felt lifeless and essentially cash grabs. I had relatively high hopes for season 2, and this season exceeded expectations and then some.
This season has shown that Filoni and Faverau have the balls to give Star Wars fans what they want. They listened to the fans concerns at the direction of the franchise, stepped up to the plate and delivered a phenomenal experience for star wars fans.
And this episode was the absolute cherry on top. The score was emotional and beautiful, the action sequences were phenomenal and the story these last 2 seasons have delivered have been a fantastic addition to the Star Wars universe. Moff Gideon was a great villain for this series and this episode was so emotional. Having Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 show up at the end was a risky move, but it paid off with an outstanding end to the season.
What this episode, this season and this series has shown is that Filoni and Faverau know what Star Wars fans want. They know how to lead this franchise and restore it to its glory days. They need to be put in charge of Lucasfilm ASAP.
All I can say is thank you for giving us this. The Mandalorian season 2 has been phenomenal and I cannot wait for season 3. Bravo
The Mandalorian: Chapter 14: The Tragedy (2020)
Another very strong chapter
So after last weeks episode with Asokha, I wasn't so sure if they'd have another episode as good as the last chapter.
Never mind my concern, a very fun episode with some great action sequences and continuing the development of Grogu, Moff Gideon and of course the mando. That being said, there is one absolute stand out in this episode, being the ling awaited return of BOBA FETT. Love what they've done with the character after teasing his return, but my heart and jaw just dropped after seeing Slave 1 come on screen.
Favero, take a bow my good man
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Don't believe everything that a critic tells you
Alright here we go. I went in with low expectations after the disappointment that was The Last Jedi (if you like that movie, good on you, I'm glad someone did, just wasn't for me)
The Rise of Skywalker is an enjoyable movie, it has everything a true fan of the franchise could ask for in its conclusion. This doesn't mean it's a perfect movie without any flaws but not every movie can be Schindlers list.
Is there a little too much fan service? Yes.
Is the dialogue a bit clunky? Yes.
Is it a perfect movie? No.
Does it warrant a 1/10 rating? Hell no.
Critics have had a field day ripping this movie a new one. The same critics that consider the Last Jedi a timeless classic. Gimme a break.
The biggest issue with this film is that J.J tries a little to hard to please everyone and clean up the mess that Rian Johnson made with the last film. The plot is a little confusing at times and the film suffers from the "Disney Effect" of taking away from dramatic elements with the use of cheap gags.
Now let's talk about what was good. Adam Driver is the best part of the new trilogy and that doesn't change here. Kylo is such a good character. Oscar Isaac is again phenomenal as Poe Dameron. Some of the acting is a bit average at times, but that's nothing new with Star Wars films.
The movie actually made me root for Rey. I wasn't sold on her the past 2 films but she was a believable hero with flaws this time round. Better late than never.
John Williams's score is, quite obviously, phenomenal and brings in elements from all 8 movie in the saga. The visuals are stunning and the movie just feels fun, something that The Last Jedi lacked.
No Star Wars movies come close to the original trilogy, but this was on par with Revenge of the Sith and better than the other films in the saga outside the OT. Give it a chance and you may be surprised.
Logan (2017)
Not only the best X-Men film, One of the best Marvel Films.
After the disappointing mess that was X-Men Apocalypse, I went into the theater with mixed feelings. I wanted a gritty and heartfelt yet bloody movie and I can happily say I left overjoyed with satisfaction.
Logan is a beautifully shot heartfelt story that has earned its place at the pinocle of comic book adaptations. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart shine in a movie that made me laugh at the well placed humour, cry on the back of some incredible acting and writing, and satisfyingly cringe at the action sequences and bloodbath on screen.
If you loved the bloody mayhem that was Deadpool, but you are looking for a beautifully well cast, well acted and well shot story, Logan is the movie for you.
9/10
