Harsh Realm (1999–2000)
Great Series
9 September 2004
I have never been a fan of the sci-fi type shows, although I did like Star Trek (the original). However as a die-hard D.B.Sweeney fan, I had to buy this series when it came out on DVD. I have only had a chance to watch four of the episodes, but I am so intrigued by this series, I am making time on my calendar to watch the rest. I cannot imagine why Fox cancelled it. It is fun to watch, it is thought provoking and I thought the actors all played their roles well. When I look at the TV shows in the lineups, all of the so-called "reality" shows, I cannot help but wonder WHAT ARE THEY THINKING? I am so sick of the bachelors, the bachelorettes, now wife-swapping? Come on somebody give us a good storyline. One like the Harsh Realm. We know it's not real, it's not supposed to be, but it is just good acting, adventure and what-are-they gonna-encounter-next viewing. Good old time TV, kind of like the shows that we used to be able to watch, "The Streets of San Fran,", just to name one of many. I agree with the previous comment, FOX would do a good thing if they would make a mini-series or a theatrical movie of this show. Only please use the same actors, I hate when someone creates a character and then the Hollywood moguls replace them with another so-called "name" actor for the box office draw. If you're afraid, make a TV mini-series. I've seen the Matrix, yuck, (my husband made me) I've watched the X-files, so-so. If you risk your money on these why not Harsh Realm?

Loved it, loved it..

I thought this was the cutest movie I've seen in a long time. I had heard about it before, but never seen it until this week. Boy was I missing a good time. I enjoyed the playful banter between the two main characters. I especially enjoyed the scene where they were playing hockey. What a hoot. His continual baiting of her was adorable. Of course I think that these two actors have been seriously over looked for some good roles. I believe that both D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly could have played the romantic leads in several films that went to other actors. We have such a shortage of romantic comedies, we need more of the electricity you could feel between these two. If that was acting it was GREAT. I also think that Paul Michael Glaser showed promise as a director. He made me feel very connected to the characters in the movie and very much wrapped up in their struggles.

Kudos also to the skating doubles, they were magnificent. The photography in the skating sequences was interwoven well enough that it was not overly obvious to me that they were doubles, even though I knew they were. I hope this film has been seen by a lot of people who feel the same way I do.

A hidden jewel.

I stumbled across this movie during a sleepless night and I was mesmerized. I cannot believe that I never heard of it before. The storyline is great, the actors played their parts very realistically. I do have to say that D.B.Sweeney was my favorite. He is just great in the leading man role. I always thought he was an under rated actor, but now I am convinced of it. As the friend of someone who's Father was in the "resistance" in occupied Norway and subsequently killed, I was particularly pleased that the resistance fighters in Scandinavia were getting some kind of recognition although not as much as the French or other countries. There were a lot of acts of heroism by everyday normal people during WWII and as the daughter of a WWII veteran, I love seeing these incidents being portrayed. Yes a lot of people died in concentration camps, but thanks to their neighbors a lot survived too. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough to any viewer, except young children. There is some violence and the story line would be beyond their comprehension. I managed to find a copy of it by searching the internet. I cannot wait for it to arrive so I can wear the tape out over and over. I could not find a DVD version and I would like to know if there are any out there. Also, the other actors in the film, where they Danish? Except for Tovah Feldshuh and D.B. I don't remember seeing or hearing of them before. A definite hidden gem, watch it if you can.
