Last Christmas (2019)
Delightful and satisfying - deserves a 10-star rating
Ignore critics and listen to your fellow audience-members: this is a very enjoyable movie, and perfect for not only the holidays, but year-round. (Though the Christmas music sets the mood, George Michael's music is always a delight, and there's plenty of both.)
I went into it knowing literally nothing about the story except a woman dressed up as a Christmas elf. Well, that's our lead character Kat, who has alienated everyone around her by being selfish, self-serving, and destructive to herself and everyone around her. Then she meets Tom.
The story unfolds with charm and quiet strength, and a few surprises. Emma Thompson knows how to write a lovely, moving, and seemingly simple story - and every character in this movie matters.
Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles (2019)
If you love Fiddler, you'll love Fiddler
There's a reason Fiddler on the Roof has been so successful worldwide since 1964. We may not be able to articulate it, but this documentary brings us the backstory, and gives us the insights and history - thankfully by and with many of the people who brought it to the stage and screen.
Be ready to laugh, to cry, to feel your heart soar, and to better understand the story you thought you knew so well. Then have the movie, the soundtrack, the tickets to allow you to experience it again, soon, in your favorite venue (or media). You'll love it even more after watching this documentary, and you'll love this documentary.
