Ra.One (2011)
Ra.One: a B grade Sci-fi or worse
This is after a long time I am writing a review for any movie, and its because the movie is so so bad, it warrants a trashing... or worse, everyone behind the movie put into a virtual world N plug removed to end the horror of having to watch such bad piece of cinema ever again.
SRK can only make movies that allows him to showcase his mimicry, story, other characters and everything else just goes out of the window. SRK does not understand Sci-fi or art, he should stop releasing movies for the public and just do it for his dumb fans and there should also be a new certification for SRK movies, 'certified crap' a big 'C'.
And SRK, please leave sci-fi alone for us, sci-fi fans coz we don't want to see your candy floss nonsense in a sci-fi movie. Please stick to making movies like KKHH or KKKG and please leave the sci-fi genre for people with brains (innovators), its a kind request.
For the people reading this, please please take my advise and don't waste your time and money on this dud...
Someone should kill the person who wrote the story/screenplay, when did British thugs started talking in Hindi, and when did a Bandra Train started going to CST station. There were a few more but I don't recollect them now. Also Arjun Rampal should take some dialogue lessons, not from SRK for sure...
I am really really disappointed with it... please please don't encourage SRK to make a sequel to this torture/ham fest...
I am giving it 2 out for 10 for its Sfx... and its 'Condom, Condom' dialogue... ;-) else its just avoidable...
Ghajini (2008)
Ghajini: Rajini or Gadar 2
Watched it on Saturday and found it dumb, I was not expecting to see a Tamil/Tegulu movie where the Hero can beat the crap out of 20-30 goons w/o saying 'woof'. I feel they should have used the plot from the English movie & and given the directing job to someone from Mumbai, then the movie would have come out better. Most of the scenes reminded me of a Tamil/Telugu/B-Bolly movie. Things like Asin character being shown as overtly helpful, is liked in South India, not in Mumbai. By that I don't mean Mumbaikars are not helpful, but this does not have to be overemphasized, scene after scene. I can't digest the fact that Aamir can beat the pulp out of the goons who are double his height, just because he has 6-pack. This was completely unnecessary.
Story is a simple revenge story only difference being hero can't remember anything beyond 15 minutes. The story is told in linear manner unlike Memento, in fact I could notice only 2 similarities between Ghajini & Memento, the Hero's Short term memory loss problem and his girl friend/wife being killed/dead respectively, else the movie is a Tamil/Telugu/B-Bolly movie. The best part in the movie is the Love story and the way it is executed, its memorable especially because of the way it ends.
Acting wise, there is nothing for Aamir in the movie, in the romantic part, he only has to remain silent throughout, all talking is done by Asin and in the revenge part, he has to give only two expressions, being angry or confused. From the story point of view, it is correct too but could have been done by anybody in th Industry, Aamir was not required. Rest of the cast is just forgettable. Even the villain, Mr 'Ghajini' is not memorable, even though his name is seen everywhere in the movie, you will forget him as soon as the end titles start to roll. Only memorable character is Asin's, whenever she is on the screen, the screen is lively, her role is definitely the best in the movie and she has executed it with honesty.
This is not an Aamir Khan fan will expect from his movie, hero in this movie is 'Short term memory loss' and not Aamir. If you are expecting a RDB or DCH, better wait for 'Three idiots'.
Being Cyrus (2005)
A twisted tale...
I watched the movie after reading all the reviews N was expecting a movie that will reveal the dark secrets of a Parsi family. But it turned out to be completely different, it's no family movie, but a dark thriller. And as the director of the movie says, 'Can happen to anybody, not necessarily a Parsi family' which is very much true.
The premise of the movie is very simple, Cyrus comes to a Parsi family staying in Panchgani, starts an affair with Katy (Dimple). And after that starts the actual plot of the movie. Cyrus is paid some money by Dimple to do something and he leaves for Mumbai. There we meet the rest of the family and see its real face. But that's not all... as the movie progresses, you come to know the purpose with which Cyrus has come to Mumbai. There's one more plot running simultaneously in the movie... which is revealed only in the end... which was quite a surprise and something new. Definitely good for one time watch.
Where the movie lags is its Hollywood style of story telling and editing, though I found it OK as I watch quite a few Hollywood movies, I don't think many ppl will enjoy it that much. Secondly, the movie is dark and does not tell the good vs evil kinda story... its really very different. Technically the movie is good but is confusing at times, especially the dream sequences and scenes that follow after first murder. Tough I liked the movie, I don't think many ppl will digest the theme, coz the movie is promoted as a movie telling tale of a Parsi family, but in the end its something different. Moreover a lot of things are told in 90 mins, that can leave the audience guessing at times...
N honestly speaking, the Fat inspector was not at all required, they cud have done with a normal size Cop who speaks a bit less. I guess the director brought him in for some comic relief which I guess was not required... coz the movie was with its normal characters OK.
If you want to try something different, watch it... its a good movie... but a bit twisted.
Rang De Basanti (2006)
Excellent... if U are fed up with the Indian politics
I really really liked the movie, especially the ending of the movie. The movie is all about trying to change the system, the way we think, to leave a mark in the society & to live what the freedom fighters have lived thru. I would say Rakeysh has done a gr8 job with the movie, but he takes a lot of time to get to the movie's actual story, which begins only after 1.5 hours into the movie.
Acting is first rate, and the movie belongs to all the actors who starred along with Aamir. I would say they really overshadowed him. N surprise surprise, he is not the central character in the movie... to find it out, go watch the movie... U wont be disappointed.
A must watch...
A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985)
Utter nonsense...
I always use to wonder what these 80s-90s horror movies had in them that production houses use to go for sequels one after other. But after watching movies like Nightmare 1 & 2 and Friday the 13th (don't remember the parts, have seen at least 3 of them), I am sure these movies were nothing short of crap, taste of ppl in the 80s-90s was so bad that these movies went on to become super successes. If these movies were released somewhere in the late 90s or current decade, all these wud have flopped badly.
Now coming to the movie in question, I had a lot of expectations from the Nightmare movie series, so I got the first 3 parts in the series. After watching the first, I was like what was the director trying to show, I cud hardly under the movie, especially the climax and the scenes where Freddy comes out of her dreams... I am still guessing was it all just a dream? But did not hate the movie coz the movie had a fresh idea... not tried by anybody before this movie.
But the second one was so disappointing, firstly a character like Jesse, they should have used some girl character instead that would have added some value to the movie. Just because they wanted Freddy to takeover some human body, they mite have chosen a male character, else I don't see any reason for using a male central character.
The story was so bad, in fact there was no story at all, something that exists only in Dreams and can only be effective if U fear him, comes out to the real world... cant digest that.
Then all the scenes after Freddy takes over Jesse are horrible, the love scenes, the pool party, then the boiler room scene (climax)... oh my god, i was feeling like sleeping throughout the movie. It was just horrible, where was the thrill, the scare in the movie, showing some cheesy gfx does not make a movie scary...
That's it guys, it was horrible... will never get any other Nightmare or Friday the 13th movie again in my life...
Swordfish (2001)
Senseless movie... Halle Berry b00bz are the only saving grace
I saw this movie on DVD, the start of the movie is a bit interesting (flashback N all), but then the movie gets senseless, there is nothing much in the movie to offer, action is kinda OK, but rest of the part is very boring. But thanks, the movie is very small and ends very soon. The FBI hacking scenes are so funny, its kinda playing Winamp viz plug-in, that too with trance music on... I could not stop laughing seeing those scenes, and I never ever understood why John Travolta was doing all he did in the movie or Halle's character... very confusing and boring...
As I have said in the subject, the only good part is Halle's Boobz, and she is looking great with this hair style.
I say, U wont regret missing this one, N for Halle's boobz, get it from Kaaza or something. ;)
Malèna (2000)
A masterpiece...
I do not understand Italian, but I don't have any problem understanding good cinema and that is what Malena is. A honest movie about a beautiful lady, an attempt to show the Fascist face of Italy in the times of World war, told by a boy of 12 years. Where the movie scores is the way the story is told and the way they have shown the hardships a lady has to undergo, just because she is beautiful and does not have a Husband is excellent.
On the acting front, Monica really does not have a lot to do, because she is mostly seen as a fantasy element by everyone in the movie, which she is not. The boy is excellent, his dad is hilarious and his friends are awesome. In certain parts the movie makes you laugh, but at times it also make you think. The final word: A movie that has all elements of a classic, and is a must watch for all who believe in watching movie as if a story is being told.
I rate it very high... give it 10/10.
