Good (2008)
Great but lacking something
****SPOILERS****Let me start this off by saying that the performances by Viggo Mortenson and Jason Issacs are fantastic. They really hold up and kept me engaged into what was going to happen next. Yet the movie is very slow so if you arn't prepared for anything with a deep meaning and a period piece you may be sadly disappointed.
Let's start with camera work, it's beautiful yet there are some odd editing issues in between but other than that it was pleasing. Now to the story. The biggest problem with it is that nothing is resolved except for John's mother dies or ESPECIALLY when John is looking for Maurice at the camp it just left wondering what the whole point of the last two hours was that I watched.
All in all this movie was great with fantastic performances and great camera work but with a story that's mildly confusing at times it'll just kind of leave you hanging.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
The Batman Begins of Spiderman
Okay, I've read all of the old comics. Watched all of the old movies, i liked Tobey McGuire's performance as Spidey but THIS Spiderman did something special: it made him a teenager.
Tobey's Spider-man was great, but he lacked that spirit that Peter had. Sure he was nerdy and acted like it but he wasn't a teenager. Anndrew Garfield is the definitive Peter Parker and Spidey. When Tobey first gets bitten by the radioactive spider, he seems to already know that he needs to be responsible and doesn't really learn anything. With Garfield he shows that even if he does have powers he is STILL a teenager and abuses his power and is trying to rid himself of the guilt and sadness of losing Uncle Ben and his parents. He's flawless, because he shows that human childish side that McGuire never had because that interpretation was a bit different and he was a little old.
Emma Watson as Gwen Stacy is PERFECT. She embodies her so well and the relationship she has with Peter is so sweet and beautiful and i bought it. It's not that i didn't like Mary Jane but i always preferred Gwen because she never whined and always stood by Peter even at his worst, but that's just my opinion.
Conner is great, he really captures how he didn't want to be the Lizard, *SPOILERS* at least at the end of the movie.
In short The Amazing Spider-man just pulled a Batman Begins and embodied everything that Spider-man is supposed to be, this brilliant.
