A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Not as good as Wes
I'm a die hard fan of the series. I'm used to remakes. Heck, what can we do? It's not like the classics are going anywhere else. So what can we do? Nothing. Just watch or not watch the remakes.
This is almost a scene-to-scene remake without anything really memorable or original to add. We get some watered down death scenes that were great in the original. For example, Kris's death (Tina in the original) was very lame.
We all know the story. We know the character's fates. Only this time it's brought in a gorier manner. Loved the throat slashing, stabbings, beatings, and more.
At some points this feels grindhouse (when Freddy is looking after Nancy who is hiding in the closet) and very dark but then it brings us to the reality: it's a modern remake. It offers 2000's clichés, some lame dialogs, but overall, it feels like this new dimension of the ANOES franchise is going somewhere.
The worst thing were the CHEESY CGi effects. Come on! Some of them are very cheap, in the likes of "Exorcist: The Beginning". We want a suspenseful story, violent death scenes, we are tired of jump out of your seat moments.
The characters were darker this time and we could get a little more from their past. I liked the flashback sequence explained during a nightmare when we learn that the kids "were everything" for Fred Krueger. And then the shocking moment when we learn that he truly molested them.
The acting is very good. Jackie Earle Haley did a great Freddy. My only complaint is that he didn't know when to be 100% dark and when throw the silly one-liners. Still, he was very good. Kyle Gallner works very good as the suffering hero with the always sad puppy face. Rooney Mara is too hot to be true. She has this next door girl look that makes her very pretty. I enjoyed her face and looks but I felt her acting was wooden. She looked disturbed and pale but didn't express much more. Katie Kassidy is one of the most "blah" actresses I've seen. She didn't add anything to the movie. Clancy Brown owns every single scene he appears on.
The Direction is slick and dynamic. Very 2000's. The settings were creepy and looked really great. The score is great. Loved the "dark" tone on music on the important situations.
This is almost a carbon copy remake with feels very modern but doesn't manages to be better than the original. Still, it's gorier, more violent, and at some points feels grindhouse. But it always reminds us it's a remake.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Big crush on heather
When I first watched this masterpiece of the genre, I was not at all a fan of horror. What's more, I did not watch horror at all, and I decided to see this film solely because of Johnny Depp. I saw all of his films and Johnny's film debut was the only one left. I was avoiding it for a long time because it was a horror, but in the end I could not resist. When I finally saw it, I had to see the second one, then the third... and I was hooked. Love was born to the horrors of the eighties, and then to the genre in general.
Many mistakenly believe that the greatest human fear is the fear of death. The fear of death is just one aspect of the really greatest human fear - fear of the unknown. Dreams are still a mystery to us. We do not understand them and we have no control over them, so the horror based on dreams is a very effective idea. Horrors based on impossible premises, no matter how well designed, have no effect on me. But when there is even a trace of suspicion that the premise could be possible (of course, not exactly in this form), combined with masterful skills of Wes Craven and the credible cast, led by Robert Englund, as one of the most awesome film villains of all time, we get a movie that maintains tension from the beginning to the end, and you will be at least a bit uncomfortable the next couple of nights while you are about to fall asleep. And if you are still a child, get ready for a few months of.
Don't Breathe (2016)
Gripping and thrilling!
A very well constructed horror movie from start to finish, it was tight tight tight, what was really impressive was the great direction and camera work.
We had some great "horror" acting and brilliantly worked out set pieces
Within it horror genre this is a solid 8 outta 10.
Old (2021)
Not his best
I have really appreciated both The Village and Signs. During the pandemic, it has been lean on the film front, and I was happy to hear about this film. But this is far from his best. The idea is amazingly good. But here there is a lot that is not well enough implemented. I struggled most with the dialogue in the film which appeared to be unbelievable and strange. We have become accustomed to big surprises in his films in the past, and moments where we are greatly surprised. These moments are missing here. Instead, we get a medium-horror movie, which at times entertains and at times becomes unexciting. It also seems to me that the end of the film is too simple and the ending comes quickly and unsatisfactorily. Nevertheless, it is important to point out that the stream of films in this genre this film rises above the majority. On the other hand, that's what we must expect from mr. Shyamalan too. We have expectations of him, but here many of them are not met.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Years later still superb
'The Usual Suspects' is slickly and audaciously made, filmed with a lot of style and is atmospherically directed. It is also hauntingly scored. It is intricately and intelligently written by Christopher McQuarrie, some of the best screen-writing he ever did. It is beautifully and deftly directed by Bryan Singer. If remembered correctly, neither McQuarrie or Singer were well known at the time and it was 'The Usual Suspects' that put them on the map.
Film is famous for the iconic line-up scene, the noticeboard that haunts everybody forever and its killer twist, one for the ages and not one to forget in the long one. Twists have wildly varied in film, there are some ingenious ones but also some naff ones, 'The Usual Suspects' is one of the ingenious ones. 'The Usual Suspects' as said before doesn't just have its twist going for it. The flashback-packed story is similarly intricate and never feels muddled or convoluted.
It has some of the finest ensemble acting there has ever been. This is especially true for a mesmerising Kevin Spacey in one of the most deserved Oscar Wins that year. Spacey is just one of the all round brilliant performances. Pete Postelthwaite, an always dependable actor who is still very much missed, is suitably mysterious, and Dan Hedaya and Chazz Palminteri make their mark as the confused cops. Steven Baldwin doesn't have a particularly challenging role but has never been better, Gabriel Byrne is also solid.
Don't Breathe 2 (2021)
Average
Now, i like the bit haste in movie, nothing very explicit, and crisp in detailing what the writers intention was. Yes, you should know about the first part but nothing would lose, if you don't. Then of course, the gore and violence is above average, what you expect from Fede Alvarez. Remember Don't Breathe 1 and Evil dead?
What i didn't like is also on the same lines then. In the first part, it was the Blind man's territory, and i totally expect him to take over things easily. But in this, the later part of the movie seemed more heroic than genuine. The Blind man behaved like Daredevil in certain cases.
What i also didn't like was the reason of the whole hustle. You need a heart, a matching heart, okay, accepted. But a mother seeking help from her daughter, way beyond my boundaries to digest. I couldn't believe that.
Anyways, it could a one time watch. But definitely, I would suggest the first part was far better than this one.
Ghostbusters (1984)
Classic !!!
I recently re-watched this classic - brought a smile to my face. One of the best films of the 1980s. It was a smash hit for a reason - great special effects of the time era, all star cast, good story and lots of laughs!
Highly recommended film for the whole family.
Vengeance Is Mine (2021)
Has he passed away?
This is a beautifully simple movie (completely different to the directors previous movie which I really enjoyed) yet deeply effective and original. With an ironic twist, it has a powerful message that will make you think. It is short and very watchable, and quite memorable. I highly recommended it.
The main question for me is, is the lead character Harry, dead and is he imagining all the events that we see as he dies?
Still thinking about it days after I watched it.
Blue Iguana (2018)
Phoebe Fox is a genius!
This film is way out there nuts, every second of it is filled with such great weirdness that I could not help but laugh.
The real star of this movie though is the British woman who plays Katherine, Phoebe Fox, so understated and very funny.
I loved how she manipulated all the characters and was the real hero, LIKE A BOSS!
