Boring and Predictable
2 stars for an interesting premise that quickly falls apart.
It takes forever to get anywhere, and where it goes you can see coming from a mile away. The acting is passable I guess.
The main character really drags things down as they are genuinely annoying. Actually, all of the characters are annoying and shallow. There is absolutely no real character development and I couldn't care less about what happened to anyone in the film.
At about the one hour mark I debated just turning to off to do something else, but I managed to stick it out against my better judgement. At least it had some decent cinematography.
The Rift: Dark Side of the Moon (2016)
It just keeps getting worse as it goes along
Ok, the premise appeared interesting on the surface, however, as soon as it begins it goes from bad to horrible. We have the cliche setup for the main character, back to work after a significant loss. Then just a hodgepodge of characters thrown together for no good reason, with no chemistry. The overacting and yelling every scene doesn't help. Bad acting, horrible plot with holes and continuity issues, poorly executed space/time travel Idea, the list goes on and on. That's before I even get to the worst part of movie, which was the music. It was repetitive, loud, and really, REALLY, did NOT suit the scene. My god, it was so unbelievably bad. It was by far the worst soundtrack and implementation of music I have EVER experienced.
Upgrade (2018)
So glad I took a chance on this hidden gem
I'm honestly not sure how this movie managed to fly under my radar until now. It's a style and genre that I truly love. I've always been a fan of tech noir and cyber punk. I feel the movie was executed flawlessly. Excellent pacing, set pieces, acting, story, and even effects. While they are minimal, that's exactly what I feel was needed. Too often big budget movies are all flash and no substance, well, this movie has a hell of a lot of substance and just the right amount of flash. I'm thankful it was low budget because focusing on effects, etc. would only detract from it. As the movie progressed I was truly afraid that it would loose me at the end like so many other budget friendly flicks but thankfully, I was wrong. Great from start to finish and it's true what I've heard, it's just like a long, well executed episode of Black Mirror.
The Twilight Zone: A Traveler (2019)
Decent start, lost in the finale
They did a great job setting up the mood and atmosphere at the beginning. I truly enjoyed the mystery and the moments of social commentary that seemed to really be setting up a special ending. Unfortunately, the impact is completely lost by the end and therefore, an episode that was set up to pack quite the punch simply comes off flat and uninspired.
Pet Sematary (2019)
Still doesn't touch the original
This was certainly a slightly different take on the original. While the outline is very much the same, some small tweaks are noticed throughout and the ending, while different, definitely comes off as much weaker. I was leaning towards an 8, unfortunately the ending coupled with poor acting on the part of Amy Seimetz really drag down the movie. John Lithgow was great as to be expected and Jason Clarke does a great job as the lead, very believable. Pacing is perfect. All in all, a decent flick that I would recommend any fans of the original or King to at least check out, even if it is flawed.
Aquaman (2018)
Nicely done DC!
I gotta say, I really enjoyed this film. It was by no means perfect, but I really appreciate the direction they took Arthur Curry's character. I wasn't really a fan of the character in justice League so I was a little apprehenisve about this film at first by Jason Momoa's portrayal in this completely won me over. Hats off to James Wan and everyone involved. This along with Wonder Woman have really shown that DC movies and characters can be great. I've always been a DC fan, so it's nice to finally have a couple films out there that show just how amazing these characters can be and how amazing the stories surrounding them can be. It's not a matter of choosing between Marvel or DC, both are awesome in their own rights so it's nice to see DC making the movies that the fans and characters deserve.
Shazam! (2019)
All around great comic book movie
I must say, I'm impressed. DC has been on a bit of a roll lately and I really hope it continues. Add this to the list of awesome comic book movies. I don't want to compare it to Wonder Woman or Aquaman because honestly, it's not the same sort of movie. It is a very heart felt, warm, and hilarious film. The portrayal of the foster family, I think, was great, having worked in group homes for over 7 years. The comedic moments are plenty but that suits the overall tone and aim of the film. Great villain, excellent action and effects, truly hilarious moments, if you're looking for a great light hearted comic book movie with laughs and real emotion and feeling, then look no further. Great film, even if it isn't 'perfect'.
Captain Marvel (2019)
In a word, MEH.
The movie itself does manage to entertain but unfortunately, it doesn't do anything original in the process. It truly is a copy and paste marvel movie with the same tired formula that we've come to expect. After 10 years of this, it just doesn't quite cut it anymore.
The casting was great with one HUGE exception. San Jackson was excellent as usual, Ben Mendelsohn stole every scene that he appeared in, and Jude Law was excellent as well. That exception was definitely Brie Larson. I admit I've been less then thrilled with her off screen antics, but I set that aside and wanted to see for myself how she did portraying this character that honestly, through the comics, I don't really care for. Her acting was wooden, she seemed more like a cardboard cut out of a superhero instead of a real person. There was no connection to her whatsoever. In the end, I just didn't care. Overall, she just came across as flat and boring with little to no emotional connection or caring.
The story was cookie cutter and honestly, there was no suspense or memorable battle or struggle. At no point was I even remotely concerned or worried for any character or the outcome. Captain Marvel is OVERPOWERED. When a character can just destroy everything and anyone that stands in their way we are just left with an empty, dull, uninspired experience. I hope this isn't the future of the MCU.
