Scrooged (1988)
In my top 10 Christmas movies to watch every year!
This movie never gets old for me! The TV puns are witty playing off the timeless classic and modernize it to fit the cut throat TV industry, and a desensitized generation.
Bill Murray is at his best with his zany SNL throwbacks, impressions and being funny the way he used to be (although I haven't seen him in ages.) The ghosts of past & present (Carol Kane) & Bob Cathwaite are hilarious. Other role players including John Forsythe and Robert Mitchum provide good characterization. This movie is 35 years old and it never gets old as my family and I can recite the lines in this film verbatim and laugh every time.
The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem (2021)
After Shtsel...I'm hooked w/ the Queen!
This is my second Israeli film/series. And so far I've enjoyed both Shtsel and now queen of Jerusalem. Some of these reviews complain about the soap opera feel, however, it is a well written soap opera with different twists and turns. Enjoyed the backdrop of the Israeli & Arab, WE II backdrop, which made it interesting. Some of the characters / protagonist are unlikable as someone else said , but that's what makes this interesting.
Also the back/forth time elements can be confusing., Otherwise I would've gave it at 10.
When is the next season?!
One Night in Miami... (2020)
Badly Miscast
After seeing many bios on all all these characters except Cooke, the story was uneven and the cast badly miscast. Although the Cooke character was pretty good the storyline was weak. The Malcolm X character wasn't too bad but no one can hold a candle to Denzel Washington's Malcolm X. The Ali character totally OTT. Sad I really had high expectations on this film, but the weak script & portrayals just couldn't cut it for me.
Apple Tree Yard (2017)
Wish all episodic series were like this
I'm late on this one but happened to accidentally found this on Hulu. This is one of the best series I've seen in a while. EVERY episode keeps you going...no slow dragged out talking fillers. Acting on top... Emily Watson on the witness stand...so believable the nuances she gives made you be inside her skin. All the cast was top notch and no OTT ...just real.
More of these mysteries streamers!
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
I bought it...but hey I'm a die hard fan! Judge for yourself!
A few Spoilers- Yes, I get everyone's complaints on the unnecessary subplot of the Newark riots, partner-then turncoat Harold and even black gangster Frank Bumpy Johnson. I get it, but it at least it wasn't a hack job of tying it into the film.
I enjoyed all the 70s throwbacks - from the music to the JBL speakers (the hottest tech product of the 70s). I agree, a little more Tony's formative years was missing (a feel a sequel coming); however, we saw inklings of what was coming in the adolescent's life from baby Christopher crying every time he looked at him to that final scene at Holstens.
Good acting... could've swore Tony's mom was Lorraine Brasco (heard her scenes ended up on the cutting room floor). Sil & Paulie -very good characterizations and I'll throw in the Uncle Jun character. Michael G.good performance for his sophomore run. I'm giving it a 9 because - hey! I liked it and know there's a sequel coming!
Manhattan Nocturne (2016)
Seriously? These reviews are too generous...
Basically soft porn here...Nothing intriguing or anticipated drama. The only intrigue is what basically everyone else said: what happened to the good roles for Adrien Brody.? He needs to fire his agent....all
his roles are the same. Glad Jennifer Beals got paid for this thankless role...at least she wasn't a sniffling doormat. The leading lady's husband was top drawer ass...
Usually I am IMBD's reviewers are pretty good but this time struck out.... can't believe I gave it a 3 (good sets maybe?)
The Vanishing (2018)
Heartbreaking...still wondering how it all went down like this..
This is one of these films that I know will stay with me foe a day or two. Slow, yet thoughtful and sets up the characterizations so you're kept guessing who and what is going to happen next. Great acting and appreciated a different setting of a lighthouse instead of the creepy old house. The UK does it best! 💯
Doctor Foster (2015)
Would've Got a 10, but Season 2, E1 ...I couldn't...
Good psychological drama here...you look at Dr Foster & say she's tripping, then here comes the "real stories." Good acting, and storyline, however, you'll want to strangle every character as story goes along after "they suck you in." Not the typical marriage free fall... but interesting how it all plays out. Definitely recommend until you get the Season 2. I couldn't believe Dr. Foster (here she goes again) after the S1 drama.
Murder Mystery (2019)
What a fun movie!! Sandler & Anniston = Do this Again!
I enjoyed this spoof of murder mysteries...the on target one-liners, cast of quirky suspects and the surprise chemistry of Sandler & Anniston. I'd like to see these two work together again. Not a classic, but who cares? Just an enjoyable 2 hours without checking to see "when does this end?"
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Not great but, but not as bad as the reviews
Story, cast, cinematography all helped this mid level film for me. Just watched a 3 season trash trash w/ a similar premise which was a total waste. I get the whole concept and it was rather good, just not great.
Servant (2019)
Click Bait
Like other reviewers, the premise was interesting and kept me stringing along until S1E6 and I had had enough. All minor suspense and no results. What a waste of time and film.
Let Them All Talk (2020)
Glad I watched before reading these reviews...
To be fair, I watched three times at night before I could piece together the dialogue. I found the premise good and also the characters interesting . I didn't know this was improvisation but rather good considering they were flying off the cuff. Dianne Weist is always very good and Candace Bergen"s role was sad but she played it well. Meryl was Meryl ..not much of a stretch for her. Lance/Tyler played the typical 20 something and I understood all his nuances as I have 2020-year-olds around me. If you're under 40, you will have no clue on this film.
