Barbie (2023)
The level of show is equal to the targeted audience
Hopefully, the "stars" who acted in this film were in it for the money. The story is not original, and the execution is more like advertising, but one of the weaker ones among those products. The story is weak, and it seems that the director did not make this film with much care. Farrel did her usual "high-quality" work, Robbie once again proved her acting credentials, Gosling was himself, and Gerwig, as usual, created something "long-lasting." Finally, it was a well-paid, routine job only.
The screenwriters also need further training. I suppose even artificial intelligence could produce more vivid dialogue.
However, at least the producers know what they are doing and have given money to this high intellectual quality work because they have found the target audience's level exactly.
Although the transitions between the drawn and reality plots are fair enough and demonstrate the difference between the real and the Barbie world, the musical interludes make me question the writers'/director's sanity. I wanted to watch this thing from start to finish to write a fair review, but the growing pain in my brain ordered me to stop before significant brain damage.
Hopefully, they are already working on a sequel because this film suits them well, and they should keep it up, as the audience is large enough for it.
I do not doubt that someone will nominate it for an Oscar, and that nomination will hopefully put that plastic award in its place forever.
Werckmeister harmóniák (2000)
waste of time
I watched this film twice. After the first, I thought I am short of brain and I could not understand a brilliant director (and writer). I asked some movie fans ('experts') what I missed or understood.
So I watched this opus again. This film, like other Tarr's productions, demonstrates - if at all - the weaknesses of some uninteresting peoples at the end of the world. In this and his other works, the so-called geeks set (but my opinion that they only conceal their opinion) those works, the director's talent, and the writer's mindless products to the 'high culture'. No, they are not, and those geeks do not understand anything and they know a little about the cinema. They should watch more Fellini to deepen their knowledge about what the cinema is.
It might happen that Tarr is a misunderstood genie but this film could not confirm this concept. He could even ruin a good work of G. Simenon (The Man from London) so one can assume what he could do with a novel of a considerably less excellent writer. No or superficial characters, the actions of persons are rather not understood than acceptable, slowness, happens nothing - perhaps this is why the geeks appreciate this film. Additionally, the English subtitle many times does not reflect the true meaning of what is being said - but, at least this is not the directors' sin. It seems that the self-made experts could not understand anything but it is enough to give many stars to cover their incompetence and explain why they spent so much time on nothing. It is not art it is something else. I felt that even Jancso's works are more valuable, which are usually rather bad jokes, too.
This film worth the 1 star because of the professional - rather than excellent -, work of the cameraman.
Mysterious Island (2010)
It's an end-product of the human digestion
I had some expectation why I wanted to watch this film. I had no information about it, except a line that this film is based on J. Verne's book. It started like a normal remake but turned to a surreal vision of a hurt brain about something. After ten minutes it was obvious that the original story and author has only a very loose connection to this film. The story does not worth more. The actors are forming unrealistic characters. It seems that they did their job only for the money without any efforts to play characters -if there is any at all. The director seems not to have minimal assumption about the story had to be filmed. In summary: Primitive story, no connection to the original book. The creators have stolen only a couple of names from J. Verne. Category "Z" actors, but is true that their level of play is comparable with the whole film. It is very difficult to understand who was able to give money for this. Waste of time even a minute. One star what I gave is exactly one star more than it worth, but there is no option for zero.
