The I-Land: Brave New World (2019)
Just Don't
Save a few hours of your life. Read the reviews and avoid this calamity. I wish I had read Ebert's review first. Impossible story line, wooden acting, poor production values. gratuitous political correctness.
Roma (2018)
I want my 2 1/4 hours back
I don't get it. I feel like I've been looking at an abstract painting but just not seeing what others say they are seeing. But, wait, maybe they don't see it either. They are just told that they SHOULD see it, and they aren't really sophisticated or clever if they don't see it. I don't see it; I don't get it. A movie should entertain or at least educate; I got neither from "Roma".
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Disappointed Depp Fan
Let me first say that I have always been a Johnny Depp fan. Loved him in Edward Scissorhands, Chocolat and, of course, POTC 1. (Not in Fear and Loathing, but it's hard to blame him for that mess.) And, who doesn't like Keira Knightley? Unfortunately, POTC 3 is exactly the same as POTC 2 which is exactly the same as POTC 1. After a while, the same ole' half-drunken, slurry swagger just gets tiresome. Any Depp scene in this movie is interchangeable with any other.
This movie goes on for much too long. (Think "Far From the Madding Crowd".) And, I can only speak for the part that I didn't sleep through. I'm glad that I woke up because the special effects near the end were awesome.
Overall, POTC 2 and 3 lack any creativity and exist only to milk the franchise. Thankfully, POTC 4 should be out of the question and the great talent in this movie can go on to more entertaining fare.
An Inconvenient Truth (2006)
The Year That Oscar's PC Was Confirmed
In 2004, the political agenda of network broadcasting was confirmed. In our hearts, we knew it all along. When Dan Rather shouted "We got him" and rushed to bad judgment about the false national guard documents, all doubt was removed.
Similarly, in 2007, it became abundantly clear that Oscar was a PC shill. When movies receive votes for their political correctness instead of their entertainment or artistic merit, the value of any Oscar is inevitably diminished.
Inconvenient Truth is nothing more than poorly executed propaganda. Gore's wooden style is a metaphor for this travesty, which will someday rank with "Reefer Madness" as a sign of myopic times.
Although Gore invented the Internet (and perhaps the wheel), I'd like to get my information from true scientists. Unfortunately, any climatologist who questions the orthodoxy of Global Warming is losing his/her job. Perhaps someday this scaremongering will be recognized in the same class as ill-founded concerns over breast implants and electric transmission lines. The trash bin of history can't come too soon for Inconvenient Truth.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
The film brings reality to the ultimate sacrifice.
The film portrays the sacrifice of Jesus. Some will decry the brutality, not understanding the very nature of ultimate sacrifice. Others will dismiss the story as fiction, secure in their own ignorance, unwilling to grasp the essential meaning of faith. Still others fail to grasp the significance of the act, unable to see that all persons everyone need the sacrifice. Yet, there will be a few, perhaps more than a few, for whom the Passion of the Christ makes the sacrifice real and personal. For those who finally and clearly understand, the faithless and self-centered of our age fade to insignificance. After the Passion of the Christ, it's hard to feel comfortable again about the culture that surrounds us. Bob
