As Good as It Gets (1997)
A great original movie.
It is always nice going to see a film that is original not only that but add comedy, a fresh story with just using a few characters no extra special effects or fluff. Its a great formula that creates a lot of beauty, warmth and emotion. The characters absolutely make this movie it was like they became the characters. This movie had a lot of warmth and overall goodness. Jack Nicholson had a great performance playing someone with ocd and a little on the bitter side. Helen Hunt and Greg Kinnear also played the parts perfectly and showed a lot of convincing emotions that didn't even seem like they were acting. The way all the characters played their parts it was hard to predict what was going to happen next even when you know what would be said or how they would act in a certain situation. The engaging and captivating story of a troubled insecure man, who then helps and insecure waitress and the unlikely bond they develop to being almost soul mates after some tribulations and self learning. Kinnear's character seems to be put in the position as a bridge and barrier between Jack and Helen. It is interesting that even with all their differences, they still share some of the same problems and those seem to bring all of them together. The one important message while seeing this was that regardless of the road blocks life throws at us that keep us from achieving happiness, there is still ways we can find to take a step forward and reverse our perceived misfortunes. This was one of best romantic comedies that has come from Hollywood and it is successful in entertaining the audience. Overall a sentimental romantic comedy that is really made better with the performance on Jack Nicholson.
K-PAX (2001)
A thought provoking movie
K-pax was a captivating film. Prot is played by Kevin spacey. The main question that weaves itself through the whole film and one that the doctor played by Jeff bridges tries to answer in the film. Is Prot a space alien or is he just mentally unstable, and Jeff must find out by the time Prot is supposedly to depart from Earth. The more the movie progresses the more it seems like either could be true. The ability he has to map where his planet is where no human has the ability dumbfounds experts. He has therapy sessions when he is under hypnosis start to bring up more real human traumatic and devastating events. We start to wonder how he can have these personality abnormalities. The end of the movie still shows a sense of being ambiguous and still you wonder what happened. The director shows with great skill to stay in the shadows and brings out strong performances from the actors. This doesn't mean that he is any less of a director to let the actors be. He delivers a power by being subtle and unobtrusive. Kevin Spacey shows his abilities as an actor by acting cool and logical as Prot one scene and then can easily switch to a more tormented personality next. He makes both alter egos believable and makes us the viewer with a more difficult job of trying to figure out which he really is. We then are left with Jeff who is excellent and becomes obsessed with trying to find out who the real Prot is. K-Pax shows us that life is contains of infinite possibilities, some of them are know others remain a mystery. With the vast unknown who are we to say what exists or what is possible. Who are we to say what exists or even what is certain. Both of these are looked into in a story in a individuals journey that is both strange and dramatic that challenges ones logic. All of these unanswered questions challenge Dr. Powell's nature. Powell has to know the truth get cant get it out of his mind and with the truth can set his own mind free. With this being a very thought provoking film that continues to challenge us by keeping the mystery on who the real Prot is and reflecting on what is possible. This is a must see movie.
Dreams Awake (2011)
Wonderful! Thoughtful! Magical!
This film is absolutely wonderful! But I have to admit I had to watch it several times to 'get it'.
There seems to be magic at work here, because this movie is not what it may seem on the surface. I got subtle new messages each time I watched it.
I read with interest some of the other reviews and while I am not accustomed to critiquing others it seems they did not quite 'get it.' Which I can understand since it took me several viewings (4 I believe) to feel like I was understanding what it was really trying to say.
And yes it certainly does not fall into the normal type of spiritual or new age films that people now call "spiritual cinema." Which makes it special. In fact I'd call it an original.
Definitely you must check this movie out! Especially if you want to go beyond the surface of other spiritual films.
