Upgrade (2018)
Could Have Been Great
Many things in this movie are good. The fight choreography the special effects, the acting is above average and even occasionally good, but the writing is a case study in mediocrity. It raises points, but never argues them in fact when ever a larger point is raised there is an abrupt cut and the thread is abandoned. It tries very hard to be profound, but fails hard at it. After the big reveal at the end the whole plot falls apart and very little makes sense in retrospect.
Good enough for a watch, but don't believe the hype of all the 10/10 reviews.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
A well made very dull show
This could have been a very good show if they had cut half the episodes. The acting is good the dialogue is good the directing is good, but DAMN does it just drag on and on. Four episodes in and we're still doing character introduction, the catalysing event is the only plot movement there has been and aside from one single instance the only horror on display has been jump scares that become far too predictable far too early.
Sometimes less is more.
Stan Against Evil (2016)
Just too short to be good
The source of all Stan against Evil's problems seem to stem from it's 20 minute run time. There is no time for proper establishment of the characters, no time for establishing the world and no time for establishing the plot in a non ham-fisted way. The actors do their best, but they have very little to work with here.
The show obviously takes a lot of cues from Ash vs Evil dead, but misses the target.
Ash vs Evil Dead already had an established world and an established main character, but they still gave the pilot episode 40 minutes to get the show off the ground despite having a much simpler premise, plot wise, than Stan Against Evil tries to have.
Stan Against Evil is a mediocre show at best.
Crossbones (2014)
Well... THAT sucked
Acting is fine (for some), but abysmal writing and direction all the way through. Way to much exposition through the main protagonists deductive reasoning, up to a point it was a minor, but not insignificant annoyance, but the part where the man stands on the top a cliff at night, sees some people way down on the beach and is somehow able to both recognize them and deduce their purpose there in a matter of seconds was the straw that broke the camels back for me. It just murdered what little remained of my suspension of disbelief. Needles to say, I will not be continuing to watch this show.
A fail of epic proportions. 2/10
