Percy Jackson and the Olympians: We Take a Zebra to Vegas (2024)
Unpopular opinion probably but...
This was my least favorite episode of the series so far. This part was such a big event in the book and in the movie so for this episode to be so dull and lackluster was extremely disappointing. Where was the excitement or adventure? The fact that they didn't eat the lotus flowers in this series and still forgot but then it was explained away as being pumped into the casino was different. I don't understand why take that part out though and how would Percy even know that it was being pumped into the casino when they're supposed to be even a little disoriented? Would've at least like to see that process of him coming to that conclusion. Give us some kind of excitement. This was the most anticipated episode for me but it was such a let down because it didn't have any purpose in this story except as a place to talk to Hermes.
And this might be a petty grievance but why are none of these kids getting to eat anything on their journey?! I thought for sure this would be the episode when we finally got to see them have some kind of meal but no. No food for the heroes, I guess lol.
The kids are doing phenomenal though. So impressed by the talent in this cast of young actors.
The Strain (2014)
What is this dialogue?!
I started checking out early but what really got me is when the old man says he's seen this before and as he's being dismissed and they're walking away, he asked if the bodies were without blood. The lady asks how he could know that. Ma'am, he literally just told you he's seen it before! The dialogue is over the top dramatic and silly. Everything seems overdramatic. Who slaps an epidemiologist giving a statement because their daughter died on a plane and then proceeds to turn around yelling at the crowd of other family members holding a framed picture of said daughter? So weird. And the main character is so unlikeable with the exposition we've been given so far. Maybe that changes along the way but I don't really care about him so far. I don't really care about anyone except for maybe Sean Astin's character because he seems sweet. I guess I should watch a few more episodes though because apparently it's a highly rated show but if all the episodes are written with such sensationalized and corny dialogue, I'm gonna have quit because it's already taking me out of the story which seems like it has a good plot. It's just nothing sounds organic and I'm sure that actors are great but the writing makes it seem like they're all overreacting and it's distracting.
Haunted Mansion (2023)
Second time around and still got it wrong
Drop "the" in the title and add a 13 to the rating but none of that made this version any better than the one from 20 years ago. I would've actually preferred to sit through that one again than have to waste time on this. The story was bland and the jokes were painful. Like, someone was trying really hard to be funny but didn't know how so they tried to mimic funny dialogue. I did chuckle a couple times though but only because Tiffany Hadish and Danny DeVito are naturally funny. Also, the kid is a great actor and he should've been utilized more. It's just a bummer that this had such an amazing cast full of wonderful actors but this whole experience was a total let down that even all that talent couldn't save it.
Elysium (2013)
Unintelligent and boring hero
Why is Max so dumb? It started with the his interaction with the police, then with the pallet in the machine and just kept getting worse. He's not a good thief because he's constantly caught, he's not very stealthy because he's constantly found including getting other people caught or dead because he's not careful or smart. Pretty much everything he survived wasn't because of skill or intelligence but because of luck and other people saving him so the character can survive long enough to be a hero. I wasn't rooting for him to fail but I wasn't rooting for him to win. There just wasn't anything to connect with him on an emotional level, like a two dimensional side character. I really liked the visual fx and the stunts though but the story was also lacking and had a predictable ending. Took me a decade to get to it and I should've just left it alone.
Killing Eve: Hello, Losers (2022)
Hello, Laziness
Damn, another piece of media participating in the "bury your gays" trope. I'm not even mad about what happened to Villanelle though because it was foreshadowed and seemed inevitable. A relationship with a psychopath wouldn't be sustainable so this would have to be the logical conclusion. That I understand, but this ending was pointless, without purpose and way too abrupt. I thought there was gonna be at least one more episode to wrap it up but, nope. It was a climax fizzled before it even started. Lazy and a huge let down for the characters. Pretty sure we all deserved so much better than this. The actors were phenomenal as always though so 5 stars for them but 2 for the disappointing writing.
The L Word: Generation Q: Locked Out (2022)
Let Down
I've never written a review on here but I really wanted to now because I just feel let down by where the series has been going. Really not sure what's up with the writing but it feels lazy and repetitive. I get that a show needs drama but there's gotta be more creative ways to create conflict than just cheating and lying or having disproportionate meltdowns.
Why do we have to keep watching Shane do the same thing after 15 years? It's frustrating and tiresome. The conversation with Shane and Tess reminded me of Shane and Carmen's conversation when Carmen said her reason for cheating was psychotic. After so long, there just doesn't feel like anything redeeming about the character and the self sabotaging and constantly hurting others is icky on it's own but more so when someone's in their 40's.
I really wanted this season to be better but this isn't it. With story lines being cut off like Carrie, Nat and Gigi or just moving on so quickly like Dani being cool with Finn now, I'm just a little confused about how I'm supposed to feel or who I'm supposed to be rooting for. Micah and Maribel are doing their own thing which is cute and wholesome if not a little mundane but at this point, the only people I care about seeing are Alice and Angie. Although I'm not sure why Angie's storyline is being portrayed as happy and bubbly when she's in a relationship with someone in charge of her education. That's a whole other issue and it's making me feel like I'm crazy to not like it. Maybe I have a stick up my butt or maybe it'll be addressed later but it just feels off and weird that it's not even being acknowledged as problematic.
I've been sticking around because I'm hoping things get better but if it keeps going this way, I'm afraid that series isn't going to make it to another season. I hope it can be figured out for the fans who are in need of good queer content and even for the actors who are so talented and also deserve more too.
