Mad God (2021)
Incredible artistry at display! But something is still missing...
It's not too often one comes across such a hidden gem from the world of stop-motion animation. In this fever dream, concocted by visual effects master Phil Tippett, we follow an explorer descend into a nightmarish underworld full of creepy creatures and monsters. Right away, we can tell this is the kind of passion project someone poured their heart and soul into.
Unfortunately, as impressive as the animation is, once the novelty of the technical achievements wear off, the lack of a plot starts to become noticeable. Around the 30-minute mark, things start to slow down and mantaining engagement becomes a little bit of a chore. Would "Mad God" have been better as a short rather than a full feature film, maybe?
It's worth pointing out, however, that the last 10 minutes of the movie ALMOST make up for the slow-paced middle part of the film... though not entirely, I'm afraid.
