The Night Comes for Us (2018)
A movie with great brutal action, but a poor story
The Night Comes For Us is one of the best action of 2018 with action set pieces that are stylized and are well choreographed. This feels like a spiritual sequel to the raid movies, with a similar style of directing and containing three actors who were in the raid. While I don't think this film is as good as raid, what make this movie stand out from the raid is the brutal violence during the fight scenes.
For those who want to see blood and gore, this film delivers on that with intense fight scenes and creative weapons that lead to gory satisfying deaths. The film isn't just gore for the sake of sake, it does adds more tension during the fights scenes, as characters would severely injured and even stabbed multiple times and would have to continue fighting, you really do feel the fatigue of the characters. The camerawork and editing are great during the fights, no quick cuts, just nice long takes with clear action. Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais are good in the movie but the standout star has to be Julie Estelle as the operator, she is great and just badass. My favourite fight scene is with her fighting the two-female antagonist (who are also great). Love the music in this scene, the cinematography, pacing, just a great fight scene.
What hold this movie back from being great is the story. Joe Taslim who plays Ito, disobeys orders against the triad and fights to protect a little girl. It seems simple, but the film over complicates it and focuses so much time in the first act setting this up. There are excesses scenes of characters arguing about the past to the point where it's just boring exposition and doesn't add to the movie. Those scenes just feel overly dramatic and the tone is way too serious. Most people aren't going to watch this movie for the story, I just wish the film spent a little less time on those scenes in the beginning. Once the action kicks in, it's a nonstop thrill ride, but those scenes makes re watching harder.
Overall a movie with great action and camerawork, but a film that would have benefited with a less overly complicated plot and better pacing in the first act.
