Enola Holmes (2020)
Really short of expectations
Painstakingly scattered. The adult characters for the most part wer written poorly. Henry Cavill's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is the worst Holmes in the history of film.
Brown and Partridge we're very good. Hope new writers are used for the second film.
Resident Alien (2021)
The Best of Television
My wife and I look forward to each episode, and the quality.continues to expand. So well casted, even the kids, who avoid any stereotypes. They're witty, tough, yet still retain the enthusiasm, curiosity, and quirks of kids. All the characters have their own charm, even those on the dark side. Gary Farmer can steal any scene, and the repartee between Deputy Elizabeth Bowen and Sheriff Corey Reynolds is brilliant, even when no lines are spoken. And Sara Tomko and Alice Wetterlund are so convincing, many more roles await them, with no need for auditions. Alan Tudyk, you are "a leaf on the wind - watch how you soar" (Serenity).
Scorcher (2002)
Certainly is a Disaster Film
The negative comments previously posted, to borrow a term, "utter nonsense", are all accurate. My first thought was to write HBO and request a refund for the time I watched it, and for all its other airings which took up time slots from shows that need to be deserving of my paid premium. If the world as we know it ended prior to this film being made, would that be a good thing? It would be futile to investigate if there was one morsel of this film that someone, anybody would find appealing. BUT do no classify this as a BOMB, as it lacks the qualities a bomb requires. This needs to be classified as a "WEEPER"; not in terms of the film evoking emotions of sentiment, but one that makes us weep that the powers that be in the film industry, allowed this movie to be made. It wasn't necessary to check off for any possible "spoiler" comments, as it takes predictable paths with unexplainable detours, check that, unfathomable detours. It's just awful, please stay away.
The Neighbors (2012)
Funny show worthy of a long run
Let's hope ABC gives Neighbors and its writers a chance to further develop an already enjoyable premise. The leading parents are resourcefully cast, with Simon Templeman and Toks Olagondoye as Larry Bird and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, brilliantly funny as they are curious of the human race, (asking questions from the ridiculous to worthy of everyone's self-examination). And the absence of a laugh-track is always welcome. I know mindless critics such as Matt Roush would have a weak comeback about the laugh track, but avoid his shallowness. This regressive ranked "The Middle" seventh out of all shows network and non-network, while panning HBO's Newsroom, because he felt it degraded women. Much to be said here, but will leave it as a brief expression of the futility of television critics. There's plenty of room for Neighbors to draft a five-year plot line. They're already improving with each show. One suggestion: a little less howling from the Weaver kids. In TV comedies, children, when not the main focus, are not always a winning formula. One big exception was Jami Gertz's last comedy, "Still Standing", where the kids were a hilarious element of the show. Let them protest, but with wit. Tim Jo's character as Reggie Jackson shines; and Clara Mamet, as Amber shows promise. In our household, comedies reign, and we are discerning. Neighbors is a show we look forward to each week and hope to look forward to each year.
Lone Star State of Mind (2002)
New Oscar Category
In sports, they have "most improved" and "comeback player" awards, yet the academy awards do not recognize actors for "most transformed". Although enjoyable, actors such as Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, and Hugh Grant play generally the same character. Ryan Hurst goes from the strong, man-of-few-words, football star in "Remember the Titans" to the character Tinker in Lone Star State of Mind and steals every scene. Maybe the award could be named after Meryl Streep, who, well enough said. Hurst's performance alone is worth watching this movie, but add in the rest of the characters that figuratively and literally feel no pain, with a very funny script, and you will watch this movie repeated times. Having a category just for comedies, especially black comedies like this one, would be such a welcome change to the movie industry blockbuster junk. Having Tinker win an Oscar; Charlie Chaplin would have understood that.
