John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Boring
I was looking forward to watching the final instalment of this movie series. Sadly, it did not deliver. Not a patch on the first two films or even the third. The fight choreography seemed stilted and slow. I found it so boring that I had to watch it in three sittings. It was like watching someone play a shoot-em-up video game and you know how boring that is to watch. It was exactly the same. Even a couple of the fight scenes looked like something off Tekken (people dancing in the background) and the top down view was also reminiscent of a video game. There was no plot to this thing other than rewards for killing John Wick. The ending was such an anti-climax. Don't bother.
Cunk on Earth (2022)
Stupid is not funny
I'm astounded at all the high scores for this rubbish. I can't understand people who thought it was hilarious. Has British humour sunk so low? I lasted precisely 10 minutes into the first episode before realising it was never going to get any better. We've had this before and done so much better by Borat. That was funny. This is most definitely not funny. There is absolutely no humour here. At least some people with sense have voted low and explained why so I don't waste any further time on this crap.
I'm not sure why my review has to be so long. Considering I recognised that it was crap very early on, there is not much to say.
The Gray Man (2022)
Forgettable
I wanted a good action movie. There's action but it's cliched, boring and just not credible. I got so bored halfway that I stopped and did something else, only going back to watch the rest on another day so it wouldn't keep appearing on my continue viewing list. In coming here to review the movie, I had to struggle to remember details, it was so forgettable. Do yourself a favour and watch something that has more plot, more interest, more engaging characters. This is a wannabe copycat movie which is not worth the time.
Trailer Park Boys (2001)
I LOVE this series
I had watched most of the original years before and enjoyed it. Then saw it on Netflix and continued. Others have criticised the later seasons. I hadn't even realised that it was brought back after season 7. Regardless, I love it, laughing at most episodes. All the characters are excellent (with the exception of Barb and her gang). I can't get enough of them. Any show that has me laughing out loud (or squealing with laughter enough to scare the dog) has to be fantastic (as I don't laugh at most comedies). I'm so glad Netflix brought it back and highlighted it for others who may have missed it the first time. When I finally finish it all, I'll probably go back to watching it all again.
Unlocked (2017)
Surprisingly good
I hadn't heard of this movie and just saw it listed on Netflix, so gave it a go. I'm not sure why the low scores from many - perhaps they're all American and upset by the seemingly pro-Muslim, anti-CIA (the corrupt ones), which is the very reason I enjoyed it compared to the many anti-terrorist movies and TV programmes which I find tedious and cliched. I found the movie a little confusing at first, but guessed the bad guys, then was rather shocked at the apparent foretelling of the future. I had to check that this was made in 2017 not 2020 or later. "Medical martial law" indeed. I can well believe it. Good actors and a good story.
Landscape Artist of the Year Canada (2020)
Boring
I'm a huge fan of the Landscape and Portrait Artist of the Year in Britain, so I was surprised at how bored I felt at the Canadian version. Canada, I'm sure, has amazing scenery and cityscapes, but the locations chosen for this series were so incredibly boring! I didn't think much of the artists' work overall, but I cannot believe the overall winner. To me that was the worst painting of the whole series.
Educators (2019)
Not at all funny
I tried. I watched three episodes, probably only because it was said to be unscripted. However, I found it painful. It was not funny at all, just embarrassing and very annoying.
After Life (2019)
Should have stopped at season 1
I really enjoyed the first series. It was funny, it was sad and it was complete in itself. I found the second series really disappointing. No humour whatsoever, and just more of the same. Then, for some inexplicable reason, a third season was made. By now you knew exactly what to expect - some time watching the video of his dead wife, an interview for the newspaper with some "quirky" character, some scenes of grumpiness and name-calling, and the usual scene at the graveside. Nothing new. Nothing funny. It was becoming seriously boring. As the credits rolled after each episode, I found myself saying "Is that it?". The last episode was probably the best one and, thankfully, looks like it really will be the last one. I rated this a 7/10 purely to reflect the first season. For the rest I'd give 5/10.
New Gold Mountain (2021)
Boring
I wanted to like this and looked forward to watching it but I lasted one and a half episodes before fast-forwarding to the end of the episode and giving up. It's too slow-moving with nothing to keep you watching. Either the script or the acting is bad, or both, I couldn't put my finger on it. Very disappointing.
Hacks (2021)
Not funny
I really don't understand the hype surrounding this. I found it boring and not in the least funny. It didn't even raise a smile from me. It seems to go nowhere and the Ava character is totally unlikeable, contributing nothing. Lose her, create situations that are actually amusing, and I might continue watching. As it is, no.
ÜberWeihnachten (2020)
Not bad
I liked it to begin with and was happy to see it was filmed in Monschau where I've been. My brother took me there years ago when he lived nearby, and I would have recommended the series to him and others who were with me, but by the end it was a bit too sentimental and mediocre even for me.
(I swear Luke Mockridge looks like Chris O'Dowd.)
No Offence (2015)
Couldn't bear it
This was recommended to me by a friend. I watched one and a half episodes before I realised it was supposed to be a comedy. I'm still not sure if that's actually the case. Judging by the toilet "humour" (literally) I'm guessing it is. (What has become of British humour? It's now rubbish.)
The characters were totally unconvincing and there were some really stupid incidents. I could not take it seriously enough for a drama but found it totally unfunny. I really disliked the Western themed music all the way through. It seemed utterly irrelevant.
I know when I start doing other stuff while a programme is playing, that it's failed completely to interest me, and is not worth continuing with. Luckily, it was a library DVD which I shall be returning without delay.
Black Mirror: San Junipero (2016)
Not Black Mirror
This episode was the worst ever. I'm astounded that so many people gave it anything over a 6. It does not belong in Black Mirror. It's a soppy love story. Was this made specifically for Americans who like happy endings? It's a betrayal of everything I liked about the series and does nothing to make us question the future of technology.
Trollied (2011)
Unfunny
I borrowed the DVD on the strength of the 'rave' reviews here saying it was hilarious and very funny. Sadly, I didn't find it funny at all. I didn't like any of the characters. Julie, especially, is so annoying.
I really wanted to like this as there is so little comedy around these days, but it just didn't do it for me. Comic moments, for me, have to be unexpected to make me laugh and I just found each episode predictable and lame. I didn't even bother to finish watching the whole DVD set. Life is too short to watch stuff you don't enjoy.
Travelers (2016)
Boring
I'm astounded that so many people gave this show anything over 6/10. It was a promising idea but it went nowhere. They kept going on about missions and saving the world but they didn't actually do much. What missions? The show seemed to be more about their personal lives which I found boring in the extreme. Anything they did do seemed really pointless and I just didn't see how it related to anything else. Towards the end of Season One, it was more about travelers fighting travelers. I just didn't get it. I found the characters one-dimensional and didn't give a damn about any of them. I fast-forwarded through the second half of series one, hoping it would become interesting but it didn't. I won't bother with the rest of the series. There are way better things out there to watch.
Calvary (2014)
Disappointing
With such a stellar cast, I expected better, but it was as if someone came up with the idea of putting a bunch of well-known Irish actors together, throw in a couple of Americans to keep them happy, and create two-dimensional unlikable characters around a Catholic priest, but who add nothing meaningful to the story. I didn't see the point of the movie at all and felt I'd wasted my time. *spoiler* A man threatens to kill the priest, burns down the church, then kills the priest. *end spoiler* Yes, it was about child abuse by members of the Catholic church, but this movie contributed nothing at all to the debate - *spoiler* a nutter kills a good priest *end spoiler*. And if it was supposed to be a surprise at who had threatened him, it wasn't. I knew the voice of the actor right at the beginning.
The Spirit of Albion (2012)
Oh dear
I appreciated the message but I thought much of it was cringeworthy. For a start I don't like musicals - way too much singing. A lot of the singing was bad, and some of the lyrics were a bit painful. I nearly burst out laughing when the girl's brother turned up and the 'old ones' pulled out bow and arrow, jumped in defence, etc - so corny it was funny. The makeup was overdone and it was all just a bit contrived. I'm not sure who the movie was aimed at. If it was aimed at pagans, it was like preaching to the converted. If it was aimed at non-pagans, they'd just laugh at it. I couldn't take it seriously (and I'm pagan) so I doubt any non-pagan could. I couldn't wait for the movie to be over so I could go home. Too stagey for me.
Nemesis Game (2003)
Tedium
I would guess that the positive comments thus far are from the minority of voters who voted over 6 out of 10. My advice - take the average rating of about 5 out of 10 as a hint that the movie is really not worth watching. I found the movie rather tedious with a poor script and nothing to keep me wanting to watch it at all. I found myself fast-forwarding through several bits of it before finally giving it up as a lost cause and seeking bed instead. I also kept wishing Carly Pope would close her mouth and not look like she'd just stepped out of a hair salon. The whole movie seems unstructured and messy. A strange Canadian movie with a British and New Zealand actor, I really couldn't be bothered persevering with it. Not worth it.
Titus (1999)
Couldn't bear it
Well, I hated it. I couldn't bear to sit and watch. It was too 'arty' for me: - the weird, ponderous beginning; the chariots and motorbikes; characters dressed as if from some second-rate fantasy film - it all distracted from Shakespeare's script. It was if the director couldn't decide on which era to set the movie, so included it all. Perhaps I just wasn't in the mood to sit and watch a long movie and try to ignore all the bizarre aspects to it. It totally put me off despite the caliber of the actors. While I can accept a modern version of Shakespeare, such as Richard III or Romeo and Juliet, this bizarre mix of styles just made it unbearable from the start.
