Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Judi Dench saves the day
I love Jane Austen's novel - in fact, it's my favourite book of all time - and I also love the mini-series. But I was a bit weary, along with many fans I bet, upon hearing that a new adaptation of the novel was being made, considering already that the mini-series is probably the best mini-series EVER MADE! Who could ever forget Colin Firth's Darcy, or THAT wet shirt! Or the great costumes and settings and the fabulous acting! I was expecting that this film adaptation would NOT try to mimic the mini-series in 2 hours. And quite frankly, it did not.
If the mini-series were never made--God bless me!--I mean, if I had never watched the mini-series, then I would say that this film is a great adaptation of the novel. Fitting this timeless story in 2 hours is hard work so it's understandable that certain concepts, scenes, and characters had to be modified and trimmed - and so they were. NO SPOILERS HERE! But I will spoil, though I don't think it would be a surprise, that Keira Knightley did a really good job with Lizzy Bennett's character and I liked it a lot. And when trying to assess Matt MacFayden's Darcy it's hard not to compare it to Colin Firth's Darcy, so for this sake, I won't. Pretending Firth's Darcy had never existed, MacFayden is a delightful and handsome Darcy, very quiet and soft-spoken, which is a very attractive feature in any man.
The film is suited for a modern audience and it did a good job on that. It reminded me of the 1999 adaptation of Mansfield Park starring Frances O'Connor - although no explicit scenes and concepts in this one.
10/10 because I'm a fan of Jane Austen.
Jersey Girl (2004)
not best but still great
Jersey Girl is a very sweet and sentimental movie that Kevin Smith was game enough to pen down to film. Lots have been said and criticized about this film but if you're a true Smith fan I believe you'll like it. Being brutally honest, it's not my favourite Smith movie (Chasing Amy is my first), nor is it my least favourite. I have no least favourite of Kevin Smith films because all of them are great, even Mallrats.
It's good to see a filmmaker go for different boundaries of storytelling, even if they fly out a tangent that some say they shouldn't be crossing. But Smith, i believe, defies that and does a really good job with it by this movie. So I wouldn't say he's a matured filmmaker because of this film; I think he already is one. He's smart, funny and articulate, and his movies are great, no matter what any critic says. GO K.S.!
EuroTrip (2004)
unoriginal
this movie is only good if you liked those teenage gross films like not another teen movie or American pie or road trip. Very all immature, gross and sometimes not very funny "haha", only funny "whatever!". But i've got to say that Matt Damon's cameo probably gives this movie some credibility. He plays a punk rock vocalist who is banging the main character's (Scott) girlfriend, Fiona. Matt Damon's band then writes a song about it and performs it at a graduation after party. The song is a true highlight of the film.
The actors are very much like your typical mid-twenties actors in these ridiculous teenage films. There's even a make-out scene between the twins in this movie, Jenny and Jamie. Filthy and gross, it IS funny. They go to a nude beach, they go to Amsterdam and even Vatican City.
I recommend this movie for those who are looking for cheap laughs. I'm tired.
Cracking the Da Vinci Code (2004)
Most boring documentary ever
OK, so who hasn't read "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown? If you haven't then try to because the novel is an amazing read. Everybody's talking about it. Yes, Ron Howard (director of A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, the Grinch) is even going to make a movie out of it starring Tom Hanks. Many scholars, academics and religious figures are talking about the novel (with a mixture of positive and negative comments) and if you've read the novel you know why.
Simon Cox tries to delve into the history and truth of the controversial facts presented in Brown's novel. He shows us the places and paintings that appear in the novel that many of the readers of the book found fascinating to know more about. Now, I love the novel and I wanted to know more about it, but to God's honest truth, Cox does not do a very good job of this documentary in regards to what he's trying to claim to present as in delving "Inside the Da Vinci Code". Yes, there are some interesting facts that are conveyed, but it's all very poorly executed. To put it down to one word... B-O-R-I-N-G. Don't bother with this documentary if you've already seen Bowling For Columbine or Super Size Me because if you have seen these your expectations of documentaries, I believe, would be high right about now. This documentary will bore the pants off you. It bore it off me. And once I had finished watching it I was so angry. I had hardly understood Cox's thesis of this documentary and wondered why he did it in the first place if he knew he was going to make it as boring as it is. Yes, the info would have been very interesting if it were showed in a more entertaining manner. But this documentary does nothing to help in learning more about the Da Vinci code. Trust me. Don't bother.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Too much like the original
Cameron Crowe totally copied the whole script from the original, giving his own little thing to fit an English/Hollywood audience. I don't think Crowe's version was convincing enough than the Spanish Version. OPEN YOUR EYES is much better. Penelope Cruz, I think, didn't do any better nor any bad. But Tom Cruise's performance was, I believe, not good enough. Jason Lee, like always, was his best as the much-talking friend that doesn't like to shut up.
If you're going to remake a movie do it well, do it original, and do it for purpose. OK, so i disagreed when Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes was released and it was different to the first and I thought that Tim should not have tried to match the original classic. But Vanilla Sky was was too similar to it's Spanish counterpart, in story, in script, in characters, in ending.
So my tip is: watch the Spanish version, it's much, much, much better.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
great movie (some spoilers)
I found this film surprisingly good. i thought i would sit down in the theatre for two long hours watching an all action-filled sequal that i'll blast on the internet the next day. Amazingingly, it's got quite some heart although I don't understand how spider-man loses his powers (oops... sorry for those who hasn't seen the film) other than it built a touching story.
MJ and Peter's relationship built up perfectly like I thought it would and the revelation of Spider-man at the end made me even impressed and surprised. You don't have many super-hero movies ending that way and I thought it was good it did.
James Franco did an OK job, although could've done a better job when he took the mask off Spider-man and was meant to be shocked.
I love the direction and style Raimi took in the hospital scene although I really hate horror films and don't watch many of them. Raimi hit the Hitchcock style on the button with that scene.
Gone with the Wind (1939)
a movie that still touches the modern audience
So much fuss around this film made me force myself to watch this 4-hour long - rather, I should use "short" - film about American society around the American Civil War.
When watching this film I found it very well-paced like Jerry Maguire and Goodfellas, and that's very important. Any movie over 3 hours can burn someone, but I found Gone With The Wind still keeping me on my couch.
It's not a thriller, not an action though it has some action and violent scenes. This movie is sad, nostalgic and enjoyable.
I found this movie has many valid themes that are still important today in society, which makes this film also another one to watch.
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Great movie, must-see
One of Tom Cruise's finest movies, Jerry Maquire is a classic. Will be on TCM regularly as a great in about 30 to 40 years time. Well-paced, very funny, I love the lighting on the film, and is a movie that goes straight to the heart.
However, I must scrutinize the ending because it was a little far-fetched and the movie was pretty honest until then.
Crossroads (2002)
The movie is more appealing to girls.
OK, so many don't like the film. I did... a bit. I would understand that guys might not like it. Guys, the only bit you're going to like is when the dude, the driver, chucks a fit because he can't stand the girls.
I found myself relating to film which is probably why I found it OK.
A League of Their Own (1992)
Madonna's great in this film.
I don't know why people keep bagging out Madonna's performance in her movies. Well, she's great in this one. One - she's very funny in this film, it really suited her. And two - her line, when the girls see their baseball uniforms for the first time, is the best line in the whole movie. It's "They don't have any pockets for my cigarettes."
It's a good movie, rent it out on VHS or DVD, either one's fine.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Good Movie, Williams does a great job.
This is one of my favourite movies, in the same category as Kevin Smith's CHASING AMY. The story is great, backed up by a really great script.
Sometimes I can't believe that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck really wrote this screenplay because sometimes I think Kevin Smith wrote it but I could be wrong and may well be completely wrong.
Chasing Amy (1997)
Second viewing much meaningful.
I first watched this film when I was 14. I found it dull and boring. That was before I knew Kevin Smith made this film.
My second viewing was just recently (i'm 18 now) and it's made more sence and it's such a really great film. It has great dialogue, good story, good acting, good directing, and like all Smith films, great references to his other films.
This is my favourite Jay & Silent Bob film (even though they're only on the screen for about 10-15 minutes). This is one of the best "romantic" films, pulling away from the obscure "American Pie" type genre films with all the sex-crazed chaos. This is a mature outlook on what love really is.
Equilibrium (2002)
Coincidence turns into watching a REALLY COOL MOVIE!
Gattaca meets the Matrix.
Being a Matrix fan, there is without question this film parallels the type of film the Matrix is, or even more. I wondered how this film was never commercially advertised here in Australia because this film really should have been a block-buster hit. Once I saw the cinematography and action scenes of this film I was hooked.
The story, the direction, the cinematography, the choreography, the action-scenes, the special-effects, the design... the film really has it's own elements.
The gun-fighting scene at the end is probably the best action-sequence in the whole film. Since the fighting scene in the first Matrix film with Neo against Morpheus in the Construct, this gun-fight scene in Equilibrium just blows you away even further.
I rated this film an imdb.com 10/10. If you like science-fiction with a real heart, real emotion, great action, and outstanding acting, this film is the one to watch.
October Sky (1999)
Best Coming Of Age Film yet
This movie I can watch and sob tears because it's such a tear-jerker. I love how the story is based on a true story and that we all know that the boys turn out to be successful men.
I should note that the movie doesn't particularly tell the truth of what happened to Sonny Hickam, but the outcome in the movie is still good and very emotive. It's a way of showing that disaster can happen and when all the odds are gone, you can pull through and be inspired and in turn you can inspire.
