Tau (2018)
Advanced AI as a person
I enjoyed this movie, it's in the same vein as Osmosis (tv show) in that it represents very advanced AI and how they could be more human than even their creators expected.
It's a very insular movie in that the entire action is encapsulated in one house, but that's fine because that's enough to get the point across.
The mad scientist in this movie really is a pig and you'll hate him, but at least you won't be sad for his end - a very satisfying end for everyone involved. The protagonist is really feisty and shows a lot of heart and character.
Dedicated sci-fi fans will probably enjoy the movie, I'm not so sure about casual viewers.
Osmosis (2019)
It's not just sci-fi
The show has a rich storyline. Some sci-fi shows out there are quite glib in terms of character development. In Osmosis we enter the story in medias res, with fleshed out characters who each follow some agenda of their own. I would say this is an atypical sci-fi show in that the sci-fi feature is central to the story, but at the end of the day it is the characters that drive the plot. The first season kept me suspenseful in that I could not foresee where things were going. It is also interesting that the show presents a conflict between those who embrace what technology can do for humanity, and those who fear it. I think this conflict will resonate with those who have a deeper interest in the current socio-political reality we live in.
There is also an abundance of different characters to the point that I think every viewer will identify themselves with this or that character.
There is an underlying philosophical aspect of the show, in that in between everything going on from episode to episode, the show depicts what drives people, what motivates them, what are their biggest dreams, and how far they would be willing to go, to sacrifice, to betray, to lie to others and to themselves, and to hurt in order to get what they need or what they want.
Ocean's Twelve (2004)
OK movie, sporting minimally bad weird montage scenes and cliché soundtrack
Honestly, this movie is not bad, it's kind of an interesting mix between action, thriller, and comedy, and definitely not a totally clueless title like Fast and Furios for example, but the whole movie was peppered with these montages of totally irrelevant scenes (e.g. guy doing break-dance while the protagonists are getting arrested???) underscored by ridiculous "robbery" music - at least 3 such montages! It's cool to use these max. twice I'd say, more than that and it becomes a bit repetitive and looks as if the director/producer just didn't have any other means of transitioning between different plot lines. Regardless of this, still a watchable movie. Obviously the acting is great.
The Neon Demon (2016)
Stop reading reviews and see for yourself.
Morbid. Worth it. The character of the make-up artist surprisingly took center-stage for me. In the end, the pretty girl is nothing but a reason. It's the make-up girl that somehow drives the action, takes decisions, albeit very disturbing ones. Everything is superficial. Who cares. Watch the movie.
When ignoring the storyline, it's a beautiful shot that's for sure.
Digression: In Dostoevsky's "The Idiot", the protagonist Mishkin observes that a certain type of beauty can save the world. That observation rang false then, and it rang falser yet after watching The Neon Demon. The point of the movie seems to be that otherworldly beauty morphs us into animals - we regress to some kind of primordial state where false concepts of morality have evaporated under the pressure of the flesh. I don't argue. Anyway, don't take this comment too personally, I've had a couple glasses ;)
