Downsizing (2017)
6.5 movie; good but nothing special.
This movie was kind of hard to rate, which in itself makes it not that great a movie. The plot was interesting at first, but then took a twist that was not that good. The acting was very good, the entertainment factor was okay. I like interesting ideas like this one but this movie did not appeal me very much. There were some things also that were impossible such as when they ride on the normal sized lake in a 5 meter long boat...
Favorite scene: When they go into surgery, Paul wakes up with the call of his wife choking and the nurse comes in with regular size crackers.
The Irishman (2019)
Not as entertaining as usual mob/gangster films, but still very good.
This movie gets greater as it goes on. The more-than-three-hours motion picture starts at a very slow pace, but at the end you can't help but realize you witnessed a masterpiece. The ending was extremely emotional for the viewer. The acting was tremendous as you would expect from Pacino and De Niro. The directing was good too.
Lacking: entertainment. It's not that there was no entertainment value to the movie, but I had to watch it in two separate sessions. It is a very long movie with some moments of slow action/pace, which could be okay to some viewers, but to me it is an important factor.
Favorite scene: When Frank kills Hoffa. The build-up to this event was amazing and long. You really witnessed how cold-blooded and loyal to Russ was Frank in that moment. The aftermath felt as if it was somebody else that caught Hoffa.
The ending was also very emotional. Frank is alone and old, has nobody to talk to, and even the pastor does not really like him as he has no remorse towards what he did in his past. Frank shops for his casket and his location for his upcoming eternal rest in his wheelchair.
Side note - the scene when a shop owner shoves Frank's daughter and Frank comes back to beat the piss out of him was great in itself, but the filming was pretty bad as it looked like a fight straight out of a 1930's flick (shockingly obvious it was a fake fight).
The Mule (2018)
Good movie, not outstanding.
This movie was a decent Clint Eastwood movie. Myself being a big fan of crime thrillers, the "thrilling" part does not score huge because you kind of see everything come before it happens. It is after seeing it that I realized it was not a thriller at all, and it is okay because it is not the intention of the director. This movie has some crime in it which is nice to see with the Mexican gangs and the cartel and drugs, but it is only a little side show from the main aspect of the movie.
To me, this movie is all about emotion and passion. Eastwood is a very old man (90 years-old) that has his ex-wife and daughter hating him for his absence over all of the important things in their lives. However, he falls in love with his granddaughter and does not want to mess up again. He then becomes a very rich man that even broke the record of the cartel for muling the biggest amount of cocaine. He becomes very charitable for his money and wants to redempt. Right after he gets threatened by the cartel to follow every single instruction to the letter or else he would get killed, his ex-wife is diagnosed with some sort of sickness and only has a few days left to live as she is sent home. After hesitating, he decides to stay with her until she dies, at the same time disobeying the cartel's instructions.
This movie is not a thriller. It is all about love, passion, redemption, kindness and is even pretty funny at times. A cute movie about a very serene old man enjoying life.
Acting was good, emotion was good, the plot was good also. However, there was nothing outstanding about it either. I would give it a 7.5, however I will round it down because an 8 is outstanding, and this one is only good to very good overall.
Halloween (2018)
Movie was not bad but not great either
The movie was not all that entertaining, which is the part that is supposed to score the highest on horror movies. Couple of scares here and there but not that many. The plot itself is very basic, but is in general more logical than most horror movies. There was a good plot twist, which gives the movie points (when the professor murdered the cop instead of Michael). The intrigue also adds a couple points because we still have a few questions once the movie is over (for example, is Michael really dead?). The acting was not bad and the graphics were all right as well.
To conclude, the movie didn't have many flaws, but didn't have anything outstanding either. I give it the passing grade for that reason, but nothing more. The biggest flaw in the movie was the fact that it lacked thrilling action. You are not supposed to yawn during those types of movies, especially at the movie theatre, but it was the case here. It was good cinematography for a horror flick, but a bad entertainment factor for a horror flick. Had it been more terrifying, it would have been a 7.
