Choke (2008)
A movie a mature audience will enjoy
Chuck Palahniuk appeals to a younger audience? I thought this movie was very well written, very well acted and dark and disturbing. I will add this book to my must read.
I guess I'm a Sam Rockwell fan, and the reason I desperately wanted to watch this movie and it was only after watching it did I realize this was based on a book. The movie stands alone very well. I just can't stop thinking about it. I never believed Victor (Sam Rockwell) to be a disgusting human being, I saw him as flawed, horribly flawed, misunderstood, imperfect and what else can you expect when your mother was completely insane.
I thought Choke was a phenomenal movie, with amazing depth of character and insight about mental illness. Victor is a sex addict, so there is an awful lot of sex in the movie - if this bothers you, then do not bother. You will need an open mind to enjoy this movie.
The comments here on IMDb are extremely disappointing, so please do not bother reading them.
The Fall (2006)
A Reward for Movie Lovers
There are few movies that impress me. I adore movies, all kinds of movies, but few movies entertain, delight and inspire me. Watching this gem of a visual feast was like riding on a magic carpet; I was in awe, carried away to places of dreams.
The acting, character development, dialog, plot and storyline were all first rate.
Funny, but I almost wish I hadn't seen it yet, only so I can watch it again for the first time. I am waiting until I can find someone that will appreciate this gem as much as I so I can see this through new eyes once again.
Bad Boy Bubby (1993)
Predictable ENDING? REALLY?
Those that think this has a predicable ending ... are you kidding? Really? It was a happy ending...YES, but if you watch the movie and understand it at all, did you really expect Bubby to have a HAPPY ENDING? I didn't! Typical Hollywood would have ended with Bubby either in Prison for life or executed - which from what IMDb says was one of the endings planned for the film. THANK YOU THANK YOU for offering us a different ending for Bubby! I was ready to be horrified at the thought of Bubby in prison; as misunderstood as he was - to die for his crimes would have been the true crime. I realize that what Bubby did was wrong, and I'm not saying that murder is justified BUT come on! This movie depicts the worst case of child abuse I've ever seen or heard of; BY FAR! I believe it is because of the ending that I love this movie so very much. I ADORE BBB, and I will recommend it to anyone that would understand and appreciate a film like this! BBB is not for everyone, NOPE NOPE NOPE! This is not pop-culture; this is not mainstream; but if you like movies that challenge what you know about the human condition and you aren't squeamish, then give Bubby a try.
Not including the first 20 minutes of the film; Bubby is the funniest movie I have ever seen (don't judge me too harshly for that statement ... we all realize we are watching a MOVIE, RIGHT)!
The Pillow Book (1995)
Visually Stunning
Erotic, seductive, intellectual, visually stunning film. The painted calligraphy on skin was amazingly sensuous.
I couldn't force myself to watch '8 1/2 Women' which was my first Greenway film, so I hoped against my better judgment that this movie would be different -- and it was. I've read reviews that say this movie moves slow, but I didn't feel that at all. I think the character introspection is very important - I felt I knew Nagito. I understood her desire, her confusion and her pain. The ending is beautifully done - Nagito is the perfect tragic heroine. This is a must see for anyone looking for a sensual erotic film; unlike most you have seen before.
