The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Drivel and Tripe
This show is a farce. Disrespectful to Tolkien's meticulous world-building and his love of his creation. If you appreciate the integrity of story tellers and the uniqueness of Middle Earth, you'll give this show a wide berth as it hopefully fades into a bad memory.
With the money they spent they could have easily made this into a magical series, but chose instead to try to force Tolkien's work into the cookie cutter Game of Thrones mold. Small wonder they waited for Christopher Tolkien to die before pumping this out. It's just another pile of tropes and hacks fed into a meat grinder and passed off as entertainment. And unfortunately it seems like people are content to eat it up anyway.
Bearing the Lord of the Rings name means that even being "ok" is not good enough. And this show is far from ok.
Sinister (2012)
Maybe I'm just too idealistic
One thing that will turn me off to a movie faster than just about anything is (pointless) child death. This movie is just full of scene after scene of children dying. Although they generally don't show the grisly details, very little is left to the imagination. Now I'm not saying that a kid can't ever die in a movie, but this seemed rather gratuitous and in large part unnecessary. While it is 'horrifying' as per the genre, it is in a way that I personally don't find so much frightening as just vile, crude, and almost vexatious. It is the sort of thing that just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. On the whole the movie was fairly well done. The special effects were good, the acting was decent, the score was well-fitted, and the story was intriguing, but the movie looses a LOT of points in my book for the above reason.
Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)
Very Familiar
Okay, here goes: In my opinion the Paranormal Activity series had a great deal of potential, much of which went by the way-side. None of the movies are stellar as stand-alone horror films, and when you put them all together they don't form a cohesive unit. Instead things are confused and disjointed with plot holes galore. This is in part a stylistic thing which I can appreciate to some extent, but at some point there have to be answers. It was my hope that this installment would wrap up the series and tie up all the loose ends, unfortunately it ends similar to the other ones, leaving the audience in confusion. On the whole it wasn't a terrible movie, but I was expecting more. If they were to create another Paranormal Activity, it would absolutely have to be the answer to all of the questions left by these movies. And I feel like if it was done well, with a satisfying conclusion, that it could bring the series together in a way that has been sorely lacking.
I Am... Gabriel (2012)
Give it a chance
Okay, admittedly ten out of ten might be a little much, but let me explain myself. Subjectively I enjoyed pretty much everything about this movie and was very surprised to see how low the rating was. Objectively, sure there are some moments where the acting might have been a little off, or where the shot could have been done better, but this isn't a multi-million dollar film we're talking about either. I am Gabriel is a nice, heartwarming, family movie that leaves you feeling good. What more can you ask for? I was appalled that this movie was rated at the same level as films such as 'The Room' and 'Troll'; movies that are so much worse than this film could ever be. Because of this, I gave the movie a ten. It deserves a watch, and a much better rating than it has gotten.
Real Steel (2011)
Truly Inspiring
I saw this movie for the first time back in October when it came out. At that time I thought it was a good movie and I hoped it succeeded. Recently I went and saw the movie again at a local Dollar Theater. This time around, when Atom floored Twin Cities, the audience cheered and applauded. It had taken us out of the seats in the little theater and into the ring with them. This is an element that is so lacking in many films today. For the connection this movie makes with it's viewers, I give it a ten. Real Steel is a triumph in every aspect. It is a rare breed of film that can be thoroughly enjoyed by all ages. Without a doubt a must see.
