Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Once upon a time .. there was fictional revenge
I'm usually sure Tarantino would make a movie so solid and atmospheric that is would convince me to like it by time if not right the first time I watch it. Once upon a time did convince pretty much by the first time.
There is a standard Tarantino movie in our heads, like there is a standard Woody Allen in our head and if a director breaks with our expectations we're either disappointed that he/she did not fulfill them/doesn't work well or we're blown away. Once upon on time ... in Hollywood is one of those movies that didn't even try to be a typical Tarantino: less violence and people dying all over the movie, filmed like an homage to a certain time and making of a movie, "meaningless" scenes etc.
First I experienced the feeling of disappointment but there came a point where the movie told me what's its actually about and I felt like " Ok you got me Tarantino". The whole concept worked for itself although it's not the typical Tarantino storytelling. The atmosphere is outstanding as the actors are and of course you feel the Tarantino handwriting in it. In this movie you have to be able to enjoy some longer scenes that are not made to transport a certain part of the story by being a clever inserted piece of puzzle. Some scenes are just made for giving the movie atmosphere and shaping characters more than necessary like Tarantino fell in love with them. The movie could without a doubt be shorter still make the same sense without those long scenes. I'm not sure if I would have liked that too much though. I really loved that Tarantino didn't even try to be the Tarantino of the past, that he changes, giving the movie what is new on his mind. I'm sure expects of his fans to be progressive in watching his movies and not conservative.
The only reason why I'm not giving 10/10 is the motif of revenge which he uses in too much of his movies and does it in this one either. That made me think about why he just can't find another reason to make a movie. Of course you can say "Why should he if it works perfectly fine?" but this would make him appear a little more colorful and a bit less restricted. But to be fair it is the best movie of 2019 I watched so far and one of his best works at all. I loved it.
The Favourite (2018)
This is one polarising movie and a masterpiece!
I know my rating says 8 stars right now but I probably will change into 9 or 10 stars. I always check if I understood everything and thought about it enough.
The movie is absolutely unconventionel and this is one thing to make movies interesting. "The Favourite" is splits people into those who want to see Jane Austen story and got disappointed/don't understand/regret watching the movie and those who recognize this is a special movie with much depth and love how film makers surprise with progressive ways of film making. The second one got it right. The fact that people only go to see cinema to watch what the expect shows that they don't understand how art progresses. This is sad for the critics of the movies but also goo because people will talk about the movie.
The characters of the movies a well defined and surprising in the way they change, the atmosphere is very tight and matches perfectly, and these 3 actresses were just great. Emma Stone never acted better before and convinced me into seeing her as a real artistic actress who can do much more than I thought she could. The other actresses weren't such a surprise but did a beautiful, fantastic job. But I knew they are good before I watched the movie.
I would recommend people who are not familiar with progressive movies to starts informing about symbols and interpretation of them. I can imagine those movies are hell on earth when don't get anything. I recommend it to the rest!
Black Panther (2018)
What's so special? 7 Oscar Nominations?
The movie wasn't the worst I've ever seen, but to be honest it was far away from the best I've ever seen.
There is something original about it when we look through the eyes of a black society with only a few white people. I respect and like that idea... that's a big plus but honestly the movie is actually nothing more than a action-fantasy story in a Avatar-Batman-Star Wars mix. This is a Marvel movie for children cause it doesn't have to tell grown up people much. It's about entertainment and there is a big difference to "BlackkKlansmen" in the quality of story-telling, acting and message to people. This time it's about a black Superhero in a black society. I'm not hater of those movies but some of them are just really dumb. What I don't like if they try to make the concept get more serious. I find that ridiculous and feel like I'd rather watch a movie that doesn'T combine our world with Superhero worlds. This fantasy trying to become real which doesn't work to me. "BlacKkKlansmen" does address that rather directly which I prefer. This movie shouldn't be on the Oscars more like a typical action movies and get nominations in irrelevant categories like effects or sound editing but not for "best picture". This is ridiculously overrated and more relevant movies would be better in that category instead.
I vote 5 stars which I think is actually too much. I feel that it is sympathetic concept somehow. But when I had to vote like this movie really was as experience I'd say 2-3 stars.
Voyage of Time: Life's Journey (2016)
Beautiful Impressions but I expected more
I'm a actually a Malick Lover. I love the way he gives time to scenes and cut short beautiful sequences. Some movies are just unbelievable beautiful.
in "Voyage of Time" are some fantastic shots but after I watched "The Tree of Life" I find it a little boring sometimes. Some scenes are too long, too slow and sometimes the dinosaurs looked pretty much like CGI. I didn't like that.
There are some time travels - back and forth - which is nice and makes you compare and see what happened from one point to another. But the "now" often looked like filmed from a mobile cam which I do not appreciate.
The voice of Cate Blanchett comes from the off and whispers some things but it'S quite hard to understand what that means when you watch the pictures. Actually I felt like I wouldn't need the voice. The pictures would be enough to me.
But the movie is definitly on unusual documentary and I would recommend it to documntary fans who like to see some experimental documentary stuff. It's definitly a good movie, but not the best thing T. Malick ever made. Maybe.. you should watch it in an IMAX cinema. I did not do that... so that could be a point I did wrong. I watch the bluray version.
Mother! (2017)
Don't listen to haters and use you heads!
The movie is brilliant. It's not a usual horror movie. It's like a psycho-horror with a lot of great ideas and shock moments.
The dramaturgy is awesome and the excitement will raise and raise and it feels like you get crazy. I will not lie I almost left the cinema but I kept in my seat cause I wanted to know what it is about and what Aronofsky wants to tell and show me. Use you your head and start reading cause that's what Aronofsky wanted. Leaving the movie and saying that it's bad horror shows that you had no clue what it is about.
I won't tell what I took from the movie but I say it is about all of us and abosutely relevant. There are just a few movies that I've watched that I would name as one of the best movies of the last 10 or 20 years but this movie is one of them. It made me think so much is probably the best movie Aronofsky made so far at least the best from what I watched... and there is only left The Wrestler and Noah.
Give it a try and use symbolism and intertextuality to understand it.
The Tree of Life (2011)
Amazing pictures!
This philosophical movie blew me away. Lubezkis camera makes me feel like I'm within in the movie and gives it a deep impression - almost like 3D but better - the actors are fantastic and the unusual way of telling a story shows that there is a lot of ways to make movies. That was very refreshing. The movie takes time to make it's plot live although there no real plot which is paradox. But it works. If you like intellectual movies you will definitly like it cause there will be a lot of questions to ask. It's like a movie revolution.
Don't watch it with no clue people!
