Andor (2022)
Disney finally got it right.
This is what I was hoping for when first hearing about the Star Wars shows on Disney+. After suffering through the horrible storylines, dialogue, and acting on The Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi (although I liked Ewan McGregor), I've finally been rewarded with a non-cheesy plot, intelligent dialogue, and capable actors. This is the first Disney+ series that I didn't have to force myself to finish...including the Marvel ones. I actually looked forward to watching each new episode rather than just trudging through them out of a sense of duty to the franchises. We'll done, Tony Gilroy.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Anyone who gave this movie a 10 should not be allowed to review movies.
***Warning...possible spoilers***
This movie was fine, but it was not great. It did a somewhat satisfactory job of bringing together all of the previous MCU movies...certainly no easy task. However, there was very little action, most of the jokes fell flat, and the emotional scenes didn't reverberate. Also, there were just too many obvious plot holes, both within the whole time-travel theme and in general. It just wasn't a great story or a great job of storytelling. I'll admit that I'm not an emotional person, but anyone who said they cried (especially some of the critics who said they cried, cried, laughed, cried, cheered, and cried some more) has never seen an actual well-made movie with a great story. I didn't cry at the end of Infinity War, and I certainly didn't get even the slightest bit emotional in Endgame. I also saw critics who said everyone stood and cheered when it was over. I definitely didn't experience that. Our theater just sat pretty quietly with quite a few conversations about the gaping plot holes. Again, not a bad movie, but it certainly didn't live up to what I was hoping for.
High Flying Bird (2019)
High Flying Bird is a Slow Moving Film
Other than some decent conversations between characters, not much happened in this movie. As many have already posted, this isn't a basketball movie, which is fine. But it's also not a movie with any conflict, pacing, or resolution.
It acts as though it has some sort of surprise or twist ending, or a "how did he do that?" moment like Ocean's Eleven. But it doesn't. We know what happened. We were there every step of the way. It even had a flashback to fill in the parts we missed, but they were completely unnecessary.
I was disappointed.
Berlin Station (2016)
Ashley Judd is ruining this show
I enjoyed season 1 of Berlin Station. It's not the best show on TV, but it certainly isn't the worst. However, with the addition of Ashley Judd, the second season is very difficult to watch. Her acting is stale and stiff, and the writing for her is horrible. Not to mention, her character's name is BB Yates. Say that out loud. It's pretty much the name of the robot in the most recent Star Wars movie. Episode 2 of the second season was pretty enjoyable, but that was because Ashley wasn't in it. But after watching just the first few minutes of episode 3, I'm already tired of her again. Michelle Forbes' character, Valerie, was by far the weak link last season when it came to acting. Now, with her and Judd in the same scenes, it's almost unbearable. Do us a favor, producers, and let's move on from the Ashley Judd experiment.
Designated Survivor: Outbreak (2017)
This is where I say goodbye
I watched the first season, and, although it was definitely not a great show, it was compelling enough to bring me back. However, like so many shows before it (Heroes, The Last Ship, Falling Skies, etc.), by the second season, it all falls apart. The first two episodes of Season 2 were okay, but this episode seemed like they were going to try to throw in every formulaic trick that all other cheesy procedurals use. As was previously mentioned in another review, the character of Lyor Boone is unnecessary, unfunny, and unwanted. In fact, the injection of "humor" altogether into this episode is completely disjointed. That kind of stuff worked for The West Wing because it was about all the facets of being in the White House, good and bad, serious and lighthearted. Designated Survivor is not that show. It is about a terroristic attack on the capitol, its aftermath, and the trying to uncover the conspiracy behind it. This is much more serious subject matter and is not easily intertwined with humor. It just didn't work. Throw that in with the "ripped from the headlines" subject matter of Confederate Statues, and you can see that the writers are out of ideas. This is confirmed even further with three new characters, at least two of which, it seems, will be regulars, and it appears that the show makers are trying to transition into a "life in the White House" type show instead of the suspense/thriller with which they began. All in all, I think I'm done.
Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
"Dazed and Confused", it is not.
Although I wasn't foolish enough to think this would be on the level of "Dazed", which has of course, gone on to achieve "cult classic" status, I at least expected to be entertained. Sadly, I was not. I guess you could say that this movie was just like "Dazed", minus the acting, writing, good characters, memorable quotes, and enjoyability factor. The only positive things the two movies had in common were that they both took place over a relatively short period of time during a transitional period in an adolescent's life, and that they both had a good soundtrack. Other than that, "Everybody" captured none of the magic of its predecessor. I realize that Linklater intentionally cast unknowns in this movie, and a couple of them held their own. However, there were two others who were woefully inadequate for a major motion picture. I won't mention their names because I don't want to disparage anyone who was basically just plucked from obscurity to star in a film. But their acting performances were a distraction to the story. Their roles desperately needed some better direction or re-casting altogether. Overall, I was disappointed.
