The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
The Turn Of The Screw, Done Better Than Ever
This is a remake of The Turn Of The Screw, an original story which has been made into a movie and/or a mini-series numerous times before.
It is not, in any way at all, associated with The Haunting Of Hill House as so many viewers seem to erroneously infer; the two should certainly not be compared. To do so is to compare apples to oranges. This is a completely different - and much older - original story.
Now that that's out of the way, I'll say that this is the best telling of The Turn Of The Screw of all of them.
The first few episodes require patience and good faith because it's a slow burn. It's worth it though. The characters become more intriguingly complex, and then develop arcs, at the same rate that the series also becomes more spooky and intense.
It's equal parts supernatural spooky ghost story, psychological edgy thriller, and love story.
A Simple Favor (2018)
Hi Moms! (And everyone else too) Don't Listen To The Haters
I went into this thinking that it was likely to be just a rip-off of Gone Girl, but willing to give it a shot.
This is a movie that has the most impact the first time that you see it because after you find out what the plot twists are, you just can't see it the same way again.
It's dark, satirically comedic, fun and dramatic all at once.
It's not for the easily offended or the faint-of-heart, and it's decidedly not a chic flick.
There are some very obvious parallels between its plot and the plot of Gone Girl, but of the two flicks I felt much more satisfied with A Simple Favor.
As for everyone who claims that it is too far fetched, they clearly either didn't see or didn't understand the last 5 minutes of the movie when a poke is made at that exact anticipated reaction from some viewers - and pulled off quite wittily.
The writing/script also is applaudable especially when Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) and each of the two children are having dialogue.
The Twilight Zone: The Comedian (2019)
Intensely Surprised
I was skeptical.
I had to prod myself past the first 5-10 minutes.
I'm so glad that I did.
I surprised myself, and was equally and pleasantly surprised by Jordan Peele, by the end of the episode when I found myself concluding that it was at the very least as good as the original Twilight Zone episode that this one was based on.
