Reacher: New York's Finest (2024)
Season 2, Episode 6

Amazing!!
6 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
One of the most realistic acts of heroism captured in the TV and film industry.

Spoilers ahead.

The closing scene of this episode was fantastic, emotional, realistic and believable.

The end gunfight was absolutely amazing. Guy Russo is a f*****g HERO!! This is the first time I have seriously seen accurate assessment of a gunfight played out in a TV or movie ever. And the acting and assessment was believable and awe consuming.

Guy Russo is an experienced law man and will know what's what regarding the type of firearms the offenders are using (machine pistols). Mostly effective as close range/short distance, low armour penetration. Guy knew the car would provide reasonable protection for a while but not for long, and so used the time to make time and provide enough time for the girl to escape. Knowing that he has to close the distance to get a couple of clean shots, he assessed the guys were not expert marksmen and realised his best hope of at least one of them serving was relying on the offenders to shoot sporadically and uncontrolled. He managed to take out two guys with trained accurate shooting, approaching sideways to reduce his target size.

He gave his life and achieved his aim of protecting the girl. Yes he had some help eventually, but this echos takes of real heroism. No celebration, no overreacting, just the silent respect and recognition of a hero dying for the greater good. Fantastic character, fantastic writing and screen play!!

One Piece (2023– )
7/10
I'm conflicted....
2 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Long time fan of one piece and know pretty much everything about one piece and some rabbit hole fan theories to boot. So my perspective is from that angle.

With that out the way... There is a great deal I enjoyed about this series. But to keep things simple it's best I just list pros-cons.

+ cast is outstanding 👏
  • The writing is sloppy
+ The acting is amazing
  • The direction is sloppy
+ The action is awesome
  • why is Luffy so weak?

+ the CGI is amazing, and some scenes are breathtaking and capture the essence one piece.

  • The videography feels like college students D movie with pointless angles and motion...
+ Den Den mushi are f#@££ing hilarious 😂
  • music is crap in most places and should have reused some more original score rather than generic hollywood trumpets and orchestra.

+ Some story changes actually made sense.

  • some changes might mess up future plotlines
+ Garp is awesome
  • Why is Koby getting so much screen time?

+ Mihawk and Shanks nailed it.

  • again why is Luffy so weak?

+ Zoro got lost
  • failed to carry over other jokes
+ I loved Kaya and Usopp
  • Kuro episode was a drag.

+ Going merry looks great
  • except it's gaping wide mouth
+ perfectly balance adult themes and goofiness
  • could have been more graphic in some scenes and needed more blood.

+ Sanji and Zoro yes....

There are other things I'd liked to have seen including the unique laughs... You kinda hear them sometimes but fails to hit. This was especially important for arlong in this period.

Some info was revealed very early too which makes me wonder how they will bridge later events should the series go the whole length.

Overall I enjoyed it, but it's clear the team making the series don't know how to use the budget they have correctly, the poor videography, directing and writing is CLEARLY being carried by the existing story and great acting, which is embarrassing tbh.

The Flash (I) (2023)
4/10
Let's talk about Trumpets and music design.
24 June 2023
Movie was overall enjoyable, won't put any multi-verse spoilers in this review, but if you're even slightly aware of the Flash's abilities, nothing comes as a surprise. The humour was a nice bonus, but ultimately nothing can save this movie from awful predictable orchestral sound track that just kills any action. Big Budget movies seem to lack brains and ability to create a coherent experience that should touch all the senses, good visuals, good story, good soundtrack. Silence would have been better than trumpets blasting your face off during each action sequence. The cameos did exactly as expected, made what would have been an okay movie, worse. Best thing about this movie... Keaton? Not exactly, but didnt take anything from it at least. Overall this movie was okay, predictable and could have been a lot better. As it is, I dont enjoy having trumpets and over the top string orchestra blasting at me for 3 hours. If this sounds like fun to you, then so be it.

A Musical Masterpiece!
19 April 2023
Bottom line is, don't watch unless you have watched or read all of One Piece up to date, you will spoil the story for yourself, you won't understand what is happening, and there is so much happening it might get confusing.

I don't really understand why many people are scoring this low, plot wise this movie is immensely pivotal for the one piece world, I won't say anything more as I don't want to reveal any spoilers.

Bottom line is, taken at face value, this is the movie Bill and Ted face the music should have been. Animation is amazing and you'll get a bit of fan service with the showing of a few popular characters.

Moving past that, there is a wealth of hidden nods from Oda into the closure of One Piece.

My recommendation is to watch this movie on mushrooms.

Life affirming, warm, heartfelt, true cinema.
30 January 2023
I think some have described this movie as a rom-com for men shot as a music video... And meant it as an insult. But I'd say that is is accurate and more insightful than it intended to be.

To keep it short, it's a metaphorical celebration of the everyday man for their dedication, decency, strength, courage and perseverance that encourages you to see the beauty in yourself and to not grow old and without embracing your skills and talents or devaluing yourself.

The running theme is light hearted and emotionally exploratory, a must watch cult classic wrapped up in fun fantasy and exceptionally beautiful cinematography that is criminally underrated.

Near perfect shonen/anime movie
17 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I can understand some of the reasons why people have given this movie a low rating, I think knowing a few things will help contextualise this movie.

This movie is based on the original story of how the mangaka was going to END my hero academia. Because he liked the story/idea so much, it was made into a movie which is full of part canon/hints and contains a relatively annoying ending to tie things up... IE this has to happen to self contain the story as non-canon. How it is done... NGL was just lazy writing, almost laughable nonsense filler, almost satire of filler BS... Oh... conveniently everyone lost their memory, and everything is okay like nothing even happened?... moving on... kinda style.

If you see past that, what you will find is a gradual build up of an excellent enemy in Nine, and a crecendo that will satisfy any MHA fan, and keep you on the edge of your seat with vibes similar to Deku vs Overhaul. Seen on the big screen, this movie was amazing visually and are gifted with the fun world of quirks and the creative use of them. The first and third MHA movies are okay, but this one is something else. My rating reflects how much I enjoyed the movie, understanding I need to forgive the lazy writing at the end which essentially makes this movie entirely filler.

Stranger Things: Chapter Four: Dear Billy (2022)
Season 4, Episode 4
10/10
Peak TV?? Peak Cinema... Entertainment??
19 June 2022
This episode has nigh pinpoint perfect crescendo of:

Character development, Story telling, World building, atmosphere,

Absolutely gripping, and would loved to have witnessed something as good as this in cinema. This episode/ and THAT Scene, is, will be, considered the greatest portion of drama in modern history. This scene deserves all the awards.

You can take the screen at face value, argue there could have been 'more' in regards to actual stakes/danger... Or even be annoyed with the good, but arguably noticable lower than hollywood budget effects... but that isnt what makes it good. It is the culmination of everything that has happened in previous seasons, the effects it has had on the character, and the progression/symbolic representation, mental health, relationship troubles, trauma, etc etc in the midst of a horror/drama setting where the stakes have been set, we have witnessed several times the brutally awful fate that's coming, and this is not a show that would shy away from killing a main/loved character and so the outcome's entirely unpredictable. I could barely breathe, and the reactions of everyone watching was identical (very audible and physical reactions) I rarely been so captivated, and when it has been so previously, it has never been by a western TV show/movie.

This isn't hype, its a hard earned and well deserved 10/10/.

Altered Carbon (2018–2020)

STOP THE HATE> SEASON 2 WAS AMAZING!
3 March 2020
Let me start out by saying that I too did miss Joel Kinnaman in lead.

However, the reality is, the universe altered carbon exists in, people are not themselves anymore thats why bodies are called sleeves.

The casting was brilliant, the acting was brilliant, the story, and development around the world and the relationships was brilliant.

The only thing I didn't like was that there were certain scenes where they should have used the actor ' Will Yun Lee' (Takeshi Kovacs prime) appearance, rather than Anthony Mackie's. It could be due to preventing a audience confusion due to the revelations in season 2, however, I didn't feel it so.

Some of the choreography was amazing, and some scenes felt like an homage to John Wick.

Certainly not a poor season, this season was massively entertaining, and already I WANT MORE.

PS> I wouldn be happy to see any of the lead actors return.

PPS. POE... <3 love that dude.

It's like you've seen it before, but not as you know it.
11 June 2019
Quite frankly there are millions of plot holes, everything was nonsense, loose ends, no real coherent story, and quite frankly, this is the worst of the first class franchise. Sophie Turner is, to be completely honest, not cut out for a role like this (yet?). She instinctively makes you want to hate her, and Jean Gray is meant to be the sensible, mature, responsible woman of the X-men. Instead we have Jennifer Lawrence just in there because Jennifer Lawrence, no wolverine, which to behonest, is essential for this story, a Cyclops which couldn't lead wet tissue down a flushing toilet.

Night Crawler and Magneto were the best thing about this movie, but they couldn't save it.

Hans Zimmer created a score for a movie that didn't deserve it. Nice try though.

And semi-spoiler- what's with the Dark Knight esque ending?

Just watched this on Netflix... Ignore the low scores
2 March 2019
Give this movie a chance. This movie takes on the inevitable. There will be a first born on Mars, and we can to see a hypothetical situation unfold around that. The characters are fairly typical and different as you would imagine, and the reality is a cliche average earth girl would 99.999999999% dismiss a guy such as this protagonist, but the great acting forces it through to work. Behind the lines and plot holes is a very straight forward and innocent romance that is made to come to life with powerful acting all round. Allow it to be, and you will love this sweet little movie. If you wanna focus on plot holes or simply more believable characters, this may not be for you, but give it a chance certainly is not a 1/10 but it far more enjoyable than the average trumpet laden Hollywood movie.

Coming from someone that loathes musicals.
6 May 2018
Yes... it's historically inaccurate.

But who cares.

This is clearly a passion project from everyone involved and it clearly shows. The songs are catchy and meaningful to drive the story, and Hugh Jackman is one of my favourite actors, which was the only real reason I gave this movie a chance in the first place, no regret here. Moving movie that celebrates differences in a magical tale of imagination. Watch it. Totally worth it, and I imagine that this movie will reach cult status.

A reimagined masterpiece.
11 January 2018
Devilman embodied everything anime was about when I was younger. Fantastic animation, brutal, shocking blood gore, and simple disdain for taboo.

If you are familiar with Devilman, you will appreciate the throwbacks and wall breaking references, and reworked scenes from the past, however, if you have not read the original manga, the themes that follow in Devilman Crybaby are actually a mix of the original anime with the manga (which varied a bit), consolidating the story in glorious fashion.

Devilman Crybaby is packed with symbolism, scenes that are funny and real, the relationships are believable, the animation style works fantastically, while the OST is outright jaw dropping. Even if you aren't a fan of anime, you should should give Devilman Crybaby a chance, especially as Netflix has done a fantastic job creating a high quality English dub so it doesn't sound like a corny kids TV show. A perfect example of what anime is really about. (Hint. its a scarily realistic reflection of mankind and our strained relationships.)

Sweet Sounds, nice short story
2 January 2017
Short music video featuring music from the OST of Turbo Kid and acts as a prequel to the movie.

It's fun, it's a nice song and I think it is fair to say that Turbo Kid is a cult classic in waiting.

If you haven't seen Turbo Kid, I would suggest watching the movie before watching this as you will appreciate it more and it kinda has some spoilers in it too.

As a fan of the movie, and only just finding out that they made this, as well as hearing that there is a 2nd movie in the works..

If you don't care for the movie and you check it out anyway, you may appreciate the music nevertheless :D

Spectral (2016)

Interesting premise, let down by bad writing
14 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This review is only being written because on the front page of this movie claiming it to be 'rock solid'.

Let me first start with, It is an interesting idea full of promise that ends up being a mediocre action thriller that gets really, really painful to watch. Go watch 'Kill Command' instead.

There is a great cast with some good acting talent involved in this movie but the writing is just bad, not even Leo could save it.

The movie starts off strong, leaving you questioning whether or not the encounter is man-made or supernatural.. They absolutely nail this. From then on it is a downward slide filled with plot holes, inconsistencies, and pseudo-science quackery. Particularly (Sarcasm enabled) **loved** the whole scene where they replaced ballistic guns for perfectly made laser cannons fitting battery packs all made out of 80s magic without the awesome that was... 80s magic, I mean look at him just stabbing around with what looks like a glue gun, and then they add an electric screwdriver sound...

If you have any love of Sci-Fi, or have any understanding of basic physics. Don't watch, it will make you stupid.
