Hunt to Kill (2010)
One reasonable fight scene does not make a movie
You can just imagine the pitch: "we are going to effectively remake Rambo but in Canada. We have got Steve Austin. Anyone want to help. No experience needed; maybe acting, scriptwriting or directing?
So the story is simple, Steve is a woodsman (whose daughter is not the smartest) and must must make weapons with a blunt flint in order to save said daughter whilst continually falling down cliffs. The rest has all of the suspense of a 5yr old colour by numbers.
I can only imagine that those rating this 10/10 have either never seen a film before or are one of the people that thought they would have a go at making this film.
Monster Hunters (2020)
Predator with bad monsters, bad characters and appalling acting
Like many others it seems that I was looking for Monster Hunter and found Monster HunterS. The plot is essentially Predator. But with elite soliders who do not know one end of a gun from the other, and who could not fall over more if they were on their third bottle of vodka. They are helped by a slapstick scientist who makes the others look relatively good (and that is quite a feat). I managed to watch it all the way through, hence the 2 rather than a 1.
If you are looking for Monster Hunter and accidently find this, go have another look.
Ava (2020)
Star cast but so lacking.
The question that this film makes you ask is how so many big name actors can still make such a poor film.
So the plot is cliche: beautiful woman with a troubled history becomes an assassin with a conscience. But the whole film just looks like everyone is going through the motions. Even the action scenes look half hearted. Nothing is convincing. There is no character depth. You are generally left without caring about the characters or even whether you watch the rest of film.
The Throwaways (2015)
Not unenjoyable considering.....
...the directing is dreadful and the actors look as though they gave up caring long ago.
The Silence (2019)
Watchable if not taken too seriously
So let's put this up front. The story has plausibility issues. The baddy creatures are trapped in a cave with a presumably limit food source and yet breed rapidly. That would just mean more competition for food. This is just an example. However, the story is entertaining and acting decent. If you sit back, enjoy and don't overscutinise then it is a pleasant watch.
The Fate of the Furious (2017)
There is far fetched and then there is Fate and the Furious
As a fan of the series you know and expect things to be rather over-the-top. But who cares, the series is about turning the brain off and watching the action. But there really is a limit to how obsurd things can get. From undetectable software the sweeps the whole internet every 6 seconds, a person "off grid" flying in a massive plane, the fastest car in Cuba out accelerated by the slowest car when the latter is in reverse. However nothing beats a single person controlling 100s of cars independently from a single computer. I really could go on for ages.
This film has a wonderful cast and one can only thing they must have paid very well to over look the plot. Shame they didn't have the money to pay someone with high school science to explain a few of the issues.
Yes the action is great as ever but this really can never be more than background TV because you really do not want to follow the plot.
Action Point (2018)
Great throwback movies
If you are thinking Jackass then don't. You will be disappointed. It is, not was it intended to be.
The movie is silly and the story is vague but it is entertaining it you accept it for what it is. For those of us of a certain age who grow up without a nanny state and blame culture this is a great throwback to younger days. Based on a true story and I can certainly believe it.
Ocean's Eight (2018)
Death of a franchise?
So you ask yourself what the previous films had that made them special. A cracking cast portraying loveable rogues doing improbable but plausible heists with a twist. Unfortunately Oceans 8 has the cast but all else disappoints. From the beginning the crew just seem cold and harsh. You are left either disliking each or feeling nothing for them at all. The actual theft is just daft. A unique lock defeated by a teenage who had looked at the key. Really? And then the necklace of heavy diamond with an unbreakable lock falls off?
You are left concluding that this film is marketed on female empowerment because it couldn't be promoted to plot, acting or enjoyable viewing.
I do hope this isn't the death of the franchise as long as it doesn't mean another like this.
