A Hologram for the King (2016)
Meh
I read a review of this film that said something like "Tom Hanks at his best...", and all I thought was, "Did we see the same film?". Because after watching this, my first thought was, "Why did Tom Hanks want to do this? Anyone could have played that role. It's not a star vehicle and it's just not all that interesting."
I understand that this film was adapted from a novel. Now that I've seen this, I imagine the book must have been pretty interesting, but this just doesn't work for me as a film. It actually reminded me of the TV movies that were popular on network TV in the 70s and 80s. As a feature, I found it... slow. Meandering. Ultimately pointless.
The Normal Heart (2014)
Good but not as good as it could have been....
Matt Bomer is so much more than good-looking... and he is definitely good-looking. But the guy can ACT. Seriously. As for the guy who plays his partner in the movie? Meh. Never got Mark Ruffalo's talent; still don't and for me, it was part of the reason this movie didn't completely grab me. Instead of acting, Ruffalo spent most of the film shouting. I was expecting a movie something like the sad and terrible story and performances displayed in "And the Band Played On", but this film felt a little rushed and stitched together.
The story of the beginning of the AIDS crisis in America is an important story that must be told, and I was interested in learning about how the GMHC got started. But this just didn't do it for me. The Normal Heart felt well- meaning and earnest and some of the performances were excellent but sometimes the film felt slightly soulless and had the look and feel of a group of actors reciting lines -- or shouting them at the top of their lungs.
Clue VCR Mystery Game (1985)
The game is just OK; the video is priceless!
Reviewers who refer to the video that comes with this game as lame or awful really don't get it unless they are speaking tongue-in-cheek. The video is so wonderfully, horribly bad that it will not only keep you in stitches while you're watching, you'll be quoting the script for years.
Another reviewer likened it to the film, "Murder by Death". That is 100% accurate. If you liked that movie, you'll truly enjoy the video that comes with this game.
It's so much better than the film that was based on CLUE, the board game; in fact, it's what the movie SHOULD have been. The script is alternately witty, corny, silly and just plain fun. If you are lucky enough to still own a VCR, you won't be sorry you saw this. My daughter was very young when we owned this game and video. She's now a 32 year old wife and mother and we STILL quote lines from the video and crack up with laughter! In fact, forget the game, just watch the video.
