It! (1967)
Very entertaining but
The film, while very entertaining is, nevertheless, preposterous. I don't think it's spoiling things too much to mention that Pimm's mother, whom he supposedly lives with is a corpse. I guess, for reasons that are never followed up on in the body of the film. The Golem is a nice touch but the mythic power is never really clear. It is alleged that this movie influenced the original Alien but I, for one, don't see it. The end of the movie makes no sense at all, so I will leave it to make of it what they will. Roddy Macdowell as Pimm does a good turn as Roddy MacDowell as we had come to know him. The other players arelargely colorless cyphers there to propel the plot. As I said, entertaining, but don't expect too much.
The Falcon in Mexico (1944)
Better than average and more free of ethnic stereotypes than most of early Hollywood
I am not as familiar with the Falcon series as many. Having said that, this is a quite delightful entry. As noted by others, this relies a bit too much on process shots (as the film was not actually shot in Mexico I would bet) but, on thr other hand, it is remarkably free of ethnic stereotypes typical of the day, as many of the process shots also include many shots of Mexico's beauty. None of the characters display the broken English that Americans mock Mexicans for except one who turns out to be... well you have to see it for yourself. All in all, the Falcon in Mexico is a very well-spent barely an hour time at the movies.
Hysteria (1965)
Clever little thriller
Certainly not a great flick but thoroughly enjoyable with a clever twist or two. The 9 is for the enjoyment and the 60s ambience provided by the film's editing and an atmospheric score. Also why wasn't Richard Webber a bigger star?
Murder by Death (1976)
Okay but it's quite ridiculous
Watching Murder by Death made me appreciate Clue, mad 9 years later, more. While Clue is certainly not perfect, MBD is absurd in its denouement. Clue, by contrast, has multiple endings, any of which make sense. What save MBD at all are the cast which are always enjoyable to to watch. One has to forgive Sellers' "Oriental" character, I suppose. Ultimately, I cannot recommend this two anyone, save to see all the star power.
Les rendez-vous d'Anna (1978)
Frustrating
Although this movies explores important themes, it does so at unnecessary length. The runtime is over 2 hours but seems longer. It would have been a more effective film if about 30 minutes shorter.
A Slight Case of Larceny (1953)
Minor comedy with a few good laughs
Rooney and Eddie Bracken team up to sell gasoline that they steal from an underground pipeline that enables them to run a chin gas station out of business. The movie has a few good laughs with Rooney playing the "brains" of the outfit with Bracken playing the beleaguered old army buddy who goes along with the scheme against his better judgment. Bracken plays a more grown up version of the characters he played for Preston sturgeon a decade earlier in Miracle of Morgan Creek and Hail the Conquering Hero. THe movie is only about 70 minutes long and resolves itself quickly once a crisis causes Bracken to seize control of the situation.
Playhouse 90: The Comedian (1957)
Very engrossing but..
Everything about this show is great except the ending. I couldn't quite buy that Lester would go back to Sammy after what transpires just moments earlier. Thus 6 out of ten. Nevertheless all the performances are top notch from.Mickey Rooney to Kim Hunter. Notably Mickey Rooney would sort of redo the Comedian in a Twilight Zone episode several years later with a somewhat different outcome!
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Wanted to rate this higher
The One Take gimmick was oddly undistracting once I got used to it but one thing that kept me from rating it higher. What did the end mean? Did he die? What does his daughter's reaction mean?
The Loch (2017)
The plot hole I noticed
Others have explored the unusually large number of plot holes, but here is mine. Since we discover that Kieran is actually Jordan and is actually the killer, is there any explanation for the large vehicle that runs Evie and Kieran off the road? This is just one of the many dangling plot points of this entertaining but frustratingly sloppy 6 part series.
The Carpetbaggers (1964)
Campy melodrama but...
What does nothing in the clothing look like the 30#. The only things that tipped us off that this was an earlier period were the phones and the cars.
Armored Car Robbery (1950)
Title says it all
Very straightforward cops n robbers flick, barely an hour long, packed with action but little characterization (except for rookie cop Don McGuire who gets the best lines). Still very enjoyable. Like many, I was confused about the ballpark Wrigly Field but there was one in LA. It was home to the minor league LA Angels, a farm team to the Chicago Cubs. It was torn down in 1969.
Midsomer Murders: The Great and the Good (2009)
One giant unexplained plot ho;e
This would rank among the best episodes but for one gaping plot hole. And that is: just how does the locksmith know who the killer is? Never explained.
