Memory (2022)
Surprisingly decent
I'm sure like most, I pretty much assume anything with Liam Neesons at this point is gonna be pretty Taken-ish. And while this did have SOME similar aspects, it really wasn't that at all and because of that, Liam Neesons actually stood out. The real star of this was Guy Pearce as others have mentioned.
But the "man I want him to win" aspect of the plot combined with the "well. I didn't see that coming!" ending really made this a 7 instead of the average of 5 that it is getting so far.
I'm trying to fulfill the character requirements without giving too much more away but there are worse things you could be watching than this.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part III (2022)
Low bar set by ep. 1 & 2
This episode was better simply cause of the vader & kenobi interaction.
But I still can't get over how bad the cgi, the acting, and the story of these episodes are.
It's like if "Phantom Menace Anakin" and jar jar had a baby and birthed this show.
This is not a good show and even my 6 stars is more about nostalgia than anything else.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part II (2022)
Still "meh" and getting worse
I don't have any spoilers this time compared to my review of the 1st episode
But, this episode is just as schlocky and dumb as the 1st.
I think the greatest things about the original 3 movies is that even though they were sci-fi, it always felt and looked as if it could be real.
Everything about this shows tells me it was made on a computer, not very well, with no care to hide that fact.
There are better sci-fi shows and movies and the only reason I have hung on this long is because of the name (Star Wars). But....they are losing me.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part I (2022)
Meh
It was fine.
Felt no threat from the inquisitors.
The chase scene with Leia was ridiculous. So noticeable that the pursuers were holding back how hard they could have been chasing.
The randomness of the one Jedi was probably needed for the story I suppose but really didn't make sense. Just coming out of no where and knowing who Obi Wan was....what?!
The fact that there are now rocks by Uncle Owen's farm....but they aren't there in Episode 4 is just bad. No body thought about that continuity?? Everything on Tattoine seems waaaay too advanced and perfect compared to how it's portrayed in Episode 4.
Obi-Wan mentions "it's been 10 years" but Leia looks, moves and sounds like she's 5 or 6.
Not really a good start. But I've made it 43 years with Star Wars being in my life and won't give up now.
Funny People (2009)
Serious Sandler That Is Good
A day after (2022) watching Uncut Gems for the second time, I watched this for the first time...and really enjoyed it.
Good story
Good supporting characters
Serious topics
Sprinkled with just enough comedy
Really liked that Sandler was kinda making fun of his real life self and some of his earlier roles.
This is definitely worth a watch (especially compared to the train wreck that is Uncut Gems)
The Bubble (2022)
Another disappointing Netflix offering
2 stars for the two times I laughed. With all these big names one would have thought they could have put together something better. I'm now wasting characters to get to 150 like they wasted 2 hours of my life.
Morbius (2022)
$23 (imax) for 1.5 hours contradicted by aftercredits
5/3 EDIT**
After seeing how many people were rating this 10 with terrible reasons why, it made me actually dislike the movie more and change my original rating from a 2, to a 1.
**ORIGINAL REVIEW WHILE WATCHING THIS TRIBBLE**
Plodding
Stupid
Predictable
Graphics are just terrible. Like watching a bad video game from 2001.
(And I'm writing this 1 hour in!)
Would not recommend!
The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot (2018)
Pleasantly surprised
Watched for Sam Elliott
Came away kinda impressed by the beauty of this. As he reflects on his life the story of his history unfolds as he is asked to "come back"
It's slow at times.
But I thought it was worth a watch.
Killers Anonymous (2019)
You'll know the ending in the first 10 minutes.
Plodding
Stupid
Predictable
Maybe I was feeling nice today to give it the extra star. But this is not a good movie.
Ugh!
And now I need to type more to meet the character requirement!
I Care a Lot (2020)
I Cared To FFW
I couldn't rate this higher than what everyone else was. But I also couldn't rate it any lower.
The story was great. I have no doubt this kind of thing (with less severity) happens. So, to me I think it's a good Hollywood Look at something real.
The acting was great. All 4 leads (including mom) were really believable in their roles.
The twist at the end was good.
But...I HATED the "Bad Guys" so much I had to FFW through them..."winning". Nothing to do with the real people playing them, their identity in relation to the role (I liked that the movie wasn't afraid to have a non-traditional relationships), or anything personal against their real life personas. I hated the characters so much in relation to the story and what they were doing I simply couldn't watch them succeed....before the twist.
Still a good movie, regardless of my personal preference to FFW.
Deja Vu (2006)
Solid. Even after rewatching 10+ years later
Like the subject says, I recently rewatched this after seeing shortly after it was originally released.
And....it's a solid 8.
Very trippy plot that does get confusing at times but still, the sciency talk gives way to a good thrill ride with a really interesting car chase and just when you think it's getting too long....it abruptly changes gears to a solid "Denzel Finish".
Good movie. Worth the watch.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
Poop.
Worse than the last ending and killed my feelings of the previous 9 episodes that up until this, were amazing.
I don't even want to rewatch the previous 9 now that I know what happens at the end.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Its fine.
Literally.
It's just fine.
Big names.
Good acting.
Apocalyptic type themes we've all seen before.
With the played out typical way to satirize current "climates" in the US.
I will never watch it again.
Not recommend it to anyone.
And am ok with the fact I watched this on a night I had nothing better to do.
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
No!
I mean.....maybe if there's a part 2 coming or if this was a 8-10 episode season. But as a 1 off. No. No! NO!
It was nice to be back in the world and see some familiar Sopranos things. But it could have been so much better.
Billions: Liberty (2021)
What?
This was the worst episode of the entire series. Like they were literally wasting time to make it as long as the other episodes. Maybe looking back this will make more sense. But after 1st viewing, this was a big time miss.
The Last Days of American Crime (2020)
If I could give this 0, I would.
Everyone else says exactly what I would.
Plot, acting, connectivity, reasoning all = 0 stars.
Sometimes I really dislike the fact that I insist on "finishing things to completion". This was one of them.
The 2nd (2020)
So bad
So many things wrong with this. Not worth the words it takes to explain.
First Cow (2019)
Better suited to be a 3-5 episode mini-series
This is beautiful.
It's a subtle story.
But I wanted more. Even if that "more" was more subtle storylines and development.
Others commented on people's inability to grasp it due to our short attention spans from technology. Nope, I totally got it.
But felt like there was more to give by the time the end credits rolled.
Still worth a watch just not worth the 8,9, and 10 stars people are giving it.
Braven (2018)
People Rated This a 6 or Higher????
What a wasted hour 40 this was!
Didn't even watch the last 5 minutes cause it was so predictable.
Bad acting
Bad story
Bad continuity (in Eastern Canada but a truck had WA State plates??)
Great scenery!
Marauders (2016)
Eh
Everyone else's comments about convoluted plot are right.
The last 10 minutes felt rushed and trying too hard to wrap everything up neatly. Ruined the whole story because of it.
Bruce Willis felt unnecessary for the role and his acting showed it in how disinterested he was. Not just about the character. Just seemed like they could have had someone else who portrayed disdain for everyone and paid them less.
And why was it raining, hard, the whole movie?! Seems like rain like that would have had the cops more worried about flooding than bank robberies.
Only worth it if you're interested in being disappointed by endings and have nothing better to do.
I was sucked in by the names on the poster and cause I'm a sucker for bank heist movies. Definitely a 2 star movie.
Designated Survivor (2016)
Eh. This was better when "Jack Bauer" wasn't President.
Seeing all the reviews of season 3 make me realize I probably won't make it to season 2.
The first 3 to 4 episodes (s1) were pretty decent. It quickly became very 24ish. Trying to shove too much in 50 minutes. Always something outlandish happening in conjunction with the already over-the-top events.
The dramatic points, the music cues, the "cliffhangers" all reeked of 24.
I'm on ep13 in s1 now and just find myself getting bored. With no real desire to continue for the 8 remaining episodes of the season.
Downhill (2020)
This was 1 hour and 26 minutes too long
Anyone that's been through a divorce, knows the feelings elicited by watching this.
Just terrible to sit through.....and I can't believe I sat through it. Maybe the only reason I made it to the end was because I distracted myself by surfing my phone.
This is a "don't watch" unless you really want to know what the end of a marriage feels like.
Moonbase 8 (2020)
Uh. No!
Space Force w/Steve Carell is probably what this show wishes it was. The first two episodes were terrible for so many reasons and I won't be sticking around for ep.3.
Uncut Gems (2019)
No!!
Big Sandler fan....but.
This was predictable. Over-dramatic. And just not enjoyable in any fashion.
Running from place to place left me wishing he'd lose everything and get what he deserved for pissing so many people off....and then he did!
In my mind the ending was so easy to see coming that I was literally surprised by none of it. The constant aggression led to so much yelling from every character which ramped up, what I felt, were so many over-acted scenes. Like they were really playing up the NYC stereotype. (I'm a west coast guy that lived in Manhattan for a bit.)
I rewatched this 3 years after the original review above to see if I was being too hard and just missing something. I wasn't. I still feel the same way. Except this time I fell asleep halfway through.
People will still watch this. And continue to rate it like it's great. It isn't. And I gave it two chances to confirm it isn't good.
Kidding: Episode 3101 (2020)
So beautifully done
A devastating topic in so many ways for so many people. I am a child of divorce and now a single dad of divorce. This had me crying all the way through the end credits song.
