The Sixth Sense (1972)
Well, I do remember this show quite well!!
It was indeed on in 1972, thought it was fall of 72. It was a syndicated show i believe that it was on weekends on Channel 40 WHYN TV back in those days. Channel 40 is still very much around today and is known as WGGB in Springfield Mass. They were great for showing many syndicated shows on Saturdays and on Sundays.
Yes, that is the first time i ever saw Gary Collins. His was a serious character on the show. They delved into the super natural and tried to solve cases of some sort. My mother and i loved the show and we watched it avidly!!! So it probably has more fans than you think. It was well written, well acted, and well presented!! I was 16 and a junior in high school back then. Good Memory!
Watermelon Man (1970)
Watermelon Man Doesn't Spit out Any Seeds~~Wonderful Movie
I first saw this film on television about 7-8 years ago. It was part of a "Heritage Network" movie special. This was hosted by Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. I fell in love!!! I had to own this film!!! How much were they holding the film hostage for???? $20 dollars??? $100 dollars?? And so I waited for a few years. My father would keep saying to me "Aren't you going to buy that movie?" I'd say "Yeah Soon", but just didn't want to cough up the cash for it. Then it finally arrived on DVD in 2004 or so. I purchased it at Media Play. And I have watched it several times. I think that it's ahead of its time. Godfrey Cambridge plays a very disciplined white man with a nice white family. He puts on his sneakers and runs down the hill as exercise racing with the bus. Just the like the Yuppies of the 80's that wore sneakers to work then changed shoes. He was doing this in 1969.. He was an insurance man and he believed in exercise, family, all the values that this country was raging against in 1969. Then he wakes up one day and is black. All the showers in the world can't wash off the color. His whole universe changes. Some for the worse, some for the better. I have a whole new respect for Godfrey Cambridge from this film. A highly intelligent man in real life, Godfrey lets this shine through in this film. Especially poignant is when he is selling insurance to young black families. He talks straight to them, and doesn't patronize them. You will see this in the film. No hard sell, No baloney. Another tidbit that you will find interesting is that the house interior they used is the same one that they used for another famous television family.....THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY!!!!!! There is a small barely audible directors commentary with the film, and you have to listen carefully to really understand it. Seems that the film company did not treat Mr. Van Peebles very nicely. And I am putting this nicely as i can. Anyway it's a gem of a movie!!!!
What Happened? (1992)
This was a Great Show hosted by Ken Howard
Each week this show dealt with dispelling rumors and hearsay about historical happenings. And they re-created the story to give you an idea of what happened.
Ken Howard was the host.
One of the major happenings that they re-created was the 1985 Airplane crash that involved Ricky Nelson.
There have been rumors that people were doing drugs (free-basing) on that plane and that's how it went into flames. But this is not true!!!
It was a vintage aircraft and re-done with all flammable natural materials to restore it... Beautiful to look at but deadly in an emergency. I guess nothing was flame retardant on this plane. For when a mechanical problem occurred on this plane, the passengers tried valiantly to put the fire out. But the fire was so fast and quick, that it just overcame everything. There was no time to put it out. And so the plane burned and crashed.
It was very well done and put ugly rumors to rest.
Sam's Song (1969)
Sam's Song/ aka The Swap Gorgeous Cinematography!
This movie had to have been made after 1968, because Nixon is president of the USA. So we start there as a young film journalist who is making a film on the president. He gets a call from his wealthier friends to stay at their FABULOUS HOME IN THE HAMPTONS!!! This movie is worth watching alone for that!! My favorite part is where Robert De Niro is pretending to shoot and be shot on the beach, re-creating a scene from a movie he saw. (In practice for the future Godfather role) He is so young and thin, and cuts a great figure in his denim jeans, blue shirt, and sneaks~~ I wish i looked like him!! young & thin!! They (he and new found girlfriend Terrayne Crawford ) run all over the beach and visit this place with a fabulous windmill and break into this wonderful house right next to the windmill~~ talk about fantasy!! Sam (DeNiro) and Carol (Crawford) are impulsive as they jump into the pool together and throw in a wheel chair along with it~~ A lovely young Jennifer Warren stars as the wife and owner of the home~~ her name is Erica in the film~~ she has a smarmy husband named Andrew, who smirks through the whole film~~ Why doesn't she leave this bum???? I won't reveal the ending, but i recommend this film for it's lovely scenes, and good acting by Robert DeNiro~~ you could tell he was on his way~~ and half the fun is getting there!!
Psych-Out (1968)
I'M PSYCHED ON PSYCH-OUT!
I purchased this movie recently as one of those "MIDNITE MOVIES", that MGM has put out as a double feature on DVD. I absolutely love this movie. If you want to know what 1968 looked like, really looked like in the hippie world at that time, this movie is for you!
Some people might think it's a bad movie, or corny. Well, it's 1968, when people acted more like philosophers than the arrogant, ignorant "HEY YO" types of today. I would much rather have the former than the latter.
In my opinion, 1968 was the Best of times, and the Worst of times. We had Vietnam, the end of the Johnson era, and the beginning of the Nixon-Agnew regime. (and those were the good old days!) There was the young people's movement on College Campuses, War Protestation, Untimely demises of leaders such as Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King. What was once a small exclusive lifestyle in San Francisco California blossomed into a lifestyle for this country and the entire world ultimately. It was the movements of the mid-late 1960's that still fuel us today!!!
Jack Nicholson classes up any movie, and he does so here! I love Susan Strasberg, and there are many other great young actors. Bruce Dern, Dean Stockwell, Adam Rourke, to name a few. The music is mostly by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, and there is a scene called "The Beads of Innocence" that you shouldn't miss!!! The Colors, the Sounds, the Lights! It's all good!
So if you are in a mellow mood to tune in and trip out, then Psych Out is your movie! I give it a full five stars! Loved it!
