Cirkus (2022)
Loud, garish interpretation of a simple story
I love funny, silly comedies. My favorite being - It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad world. Having said that,
Few observations, comments on Cirkus,
1. The artificial set design looked extremely fake, seemed like a Barbie dollhouse.
2. Background music was unbearable. The playing of old songs was unimaginative & silly, not funny.
3. The repetitive Circus stock scenes, Current gag, Dr.'s 4th wall breaking, etc. It all got so boring. Sign of lazy writing. Looked like an extended Kapil Sharma show.
4. Ranveer's worst performance. Absolutely pedestrian. No shades in the characters. Sleepwalked thru the movie. Varun Sharma was equally bad, maybe he was a bad casting choice.
5. No comments on the Heroines. They were used as props.
6. Too many characters to keep track of. Many could have been edited out without any impact.
7. The Momo character started off funny, but got so repetitive that ended up being unbearable
8. Poor Johnny Lever's valiant attempt lacked the punch. It seemed a forced inclusion.
9. Angoor was miles ahead in the execution of the simple story of confusion. One should watch it, to enjoy the story.
10. Redemption- Sanjay Mishra & Deepika's cameo were the only bearable parts. And the Golmaal segue in the end.
Terribly Disappointed Rohit. A fan.
Uunchai (2022)
Brilliant!
I went in thinking how I was going to survive 2.45 hrs, but was pleasantly surprised at not getting bored.
Firstly, the casting is perfect. Each actor outdid the others. Finally, Amitabh delivers a complex character after a long time, without his recent hammings. Story was simple, with enough interesting segues. What I loved is that each personal anecdotes were left unresolved as part of life, to be accepted with a pinch of salt.
Sure 15-20 minutes could hv made it more compact. But who is complaining.
Also the intelligent "Critics" complaining about mobile on Everest Base camp, "Chill", it's a movie & there is something called cinematic liberty & the audience ain't stupid to not understand the emotion.
Defnitie watch, in theater preferably, to support such movie making.
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022)
Brilliant work of love!
Brilliantly done first half!
The Cameos & their associated Visuals, Songs, Cinematography were all fantastic. The car chase scene was of international standard. The 2nd half does get chaotic & climax wasn't crisp as the 1st.
Acting was top-notch & sincere. Cameos were perfect. Big B didn't shout or overact, unlike his recent movies. Mouni deserves a mention, delivered a loud character without getting irritating.
The story has a Indianized Avenger like structure with the search & fight for Infinity stones, definitely holds future potential.
Smartly avoided religious trappings, apart from the character names & a few visuals, no Gods were really invoked(ie insulted) - should pacify the Brigade.
Flaws - Editing could have shorned 15-20 minutes, esp. From the repetitive climax fight scenes. The Ends visuals got boring & looked artificial(Augmented reality works better) - esp. Earthquake, Villian etc.
Bit more clarity on the different individual characters & power of the final group of fighters. Some loose ends in terms of the the Astras.
All in All a definite watch & Expectations from the Future.
Anek (2022)
Wasted Opportunity, still a watch
Good things first
- The rebel group track
- Niko & his journey
- Father-daughter conflict. Both actors did a great job.
- Cinematography - Decent, could hv captured a lot more of the beauty
- Nice mix of music & background sound
- Good casting, esp. The local talent
Now the rest,
- Ayushman K. First overacting stint. What's with the sniffling & instant change of expression
- Pahwa's Kashmiri Abrar role was ambivalent. Was he supposed to be empathetic or Not? If not, what was the point of drawing parallel with Kashmir!?
- Aman's loyalties, feelings were confusing & kept switching, weak writing here.
- What the hell was the JD Chakravarty character for - Who, why, what & where did he go? Looked like wandered into a different movie by mistake.
- Unnecessary Surgical strike with a over the top 'Josh' attempt.
- Too many loose ends to mention. Shody writing.
Nevertheless, a welcome effort to open our minds to a lost section of our country.
Atrangi Re (2021)
Entertaining!
Entertaining movie, decent script, good acting, brilliant music. Dhanush is endearing. Sara is improving. Akshay, small but significant role. ALR is back in Ranjanna territory after the Zero debacle.
PS: Sara plays a double role of herself & Mom confusing audience to wonder why she us having affair with her father!
Sardar Udham (2021)
Important story needed to be told
Decent movie. Brilliant cinematography. Foreign actors were very well integrated into storyline.
Editing sucked. Need patience & concentration to watch the movie.
Couple of issues,
1. Length at 2.45 hrs was a bit indulgent, could hv been trimmed by 20-30 mins. Maybe OTT gave the luxury.
2. Editing was chaotic, esp. In first half, switching timelines every other scene. It got annoying to say the least.
3. Jallianwala baug scene was gore, grotesque which being true is fine. But it got repetitive & dragged on for 45 mins losing viewers attention span.
Gang of Ghosts (2014)
Pathetic Remake!
Destroyed a brilliant satirical movie by introducing unnecessary masala songs, characters & plot lines. Everyone overacted including Anupam kher, with his annoying buck teeth. Sharman Joshi's role made a mockery of the revolutionary in the original one. Poor Parambrata had the misfortune of anchoring this debacle. Satish Kaushik needs to apologize to the original makers & the audience.
Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors (2020)
Average. Not as good as Season 1
Lot of missing holes & loose ends in the plot. Most lead actors did a good job, except for Ashish Vidyarthi, hamming it out. Kirti kulhari character uni-dimensional till the end. Climax was underwhelming. Disappointed.
Ludo (2020)
Nice movie
Pretty decent movie. The only gripe is at the length, I guess Anurag got lazy with the editing, knowing it was going straight to OTT. Abhishek track was the weakest, same brooding expression as in Yuva, Raavan. Need to show some variety. Pankaj is getting boring with the same sauve gangster look. Rao was phenomenal. Girls & Rohit did well. Gangster meets Life in a Metro in Jagga Jassos canvas.
Laxmii (2020)
Oh God!
Apart from everything else written here,
* Sharad Kelkar was much more convincing than Akshay, his exaggerated swagger was annoying
* What's with the furry looking ghost, was it supposed to be comical
* Rajesh Sharma was totally miscast as the father, looked out of place
* Manu Rishi as son of Rajesh Sharma, was the casting done thru a lotto draw?
* The inter-religious canvas looked forced, deliberate & weird
* Read somewhere that this is Akshay's best role. Really! Feel bad for him, he is not this bad usually.
