Apocalypto (2006)
Great Movie
What a great movie. Why can't the critics give Mel Gibson a break. Yes the film is violent but the violence is no worse than in other action movies. Forget the critics go and see this movie, you won't be sorry. It has one of the finest chases ever in cinematic history and it worth the price of admission for that alone. Okay it doesn't start particularly well and after the first 10 minutes one might think to leave the cinema as its a fairly rough start. But the acting is very good and in the Mayan leader we have someone to take away Magua's crown (Wes Studi in Last of the Mohicans) as most evil screen Indian. He really looks the business in his headdress and his hand gestures. He looks like he would make a great wing-forward in rugby. So beat the critics and enjoy the movie.
Shattered Glass (2003)
I love this movie
I think Shattered Glass is a treasure of a movie. We have our own Stephen Glass in Ireland. I work as a journalist in Dublin and while I wont mention any names while I was studying journalism a student who had graduated a year ahead of me was being feted by the college staff as a journalistic genius. About a year later the "genius" sold a story to an Irish edition of at UK tabloid. the story was an interview with a famous Irish pop group, three sisters and one brother. In the interview the prettiest sister said that she had a boyfriend. The interview was a complete fabrication and the game was up when the pop group demanded a retraction and when they stated that they had never talked to the journalist in question. Legend has it that this wasn't the first story that gd had "cooked" a right Irish Stew.
Ordinary Decent Criminal (2000)
What a pile of garbage
What a pile of garbage, the really funny thing is that we have a noble tradition in Ireland in that Irish film critics are loathe to criticise anything about any movie which is Irish produced, The Irish film community is so small so any criticism is like shitting on your own doorstep. What can I say about this film. Firstly the accents are so awful. Kevin Spacey's accent is terrible and Linda Fiorentino and what about Helena Baxendale. Don't bother watching it. By the way the way, Martin Cahill who the film was based on was no handsome metrosexual like Mr Spacey, he was a ruthless, angry, thug, who roamed about Dublin in a poxy anorak and never drove flash cars. John Boorman's "The General" is a far better portrait of Mr Cahill. Give this movie a wide berth but be thankful that some Irish accountant and some wily investors got some tax relief because that is what the Irish film industry is, an excuse for some tax relief.
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
One of my favourite movies
Last of the Mohicans is one of my favourite movies of all time. A good friend of mine said that when he saw it first in Dublin after the scene when Hawkeye(Daniel Day Lewis) shoots the deer one Dublin wag shouted out "nice one Christy" a reference to Christy Brown in "My Left Foot". Yes LOMH is one of my favourite dvds, the fights scenes are the best ever and in my view have not been bettered yet. Is Magua not one of the greatest bad guys. I presume Wes got the part after his sterling performance as the mad pawnee in Dances with Wolves. I love the menace of the forest and the fantastic locations. I'm considering purchasing the Directors Cut to compare it with the European version. I have just bought a home cinema system and enjoy watching LOMH for every tomahawk throw and every musket shot. I am le Long Carabine rock on!
