After Dark, My Sweet (1990)
One of the best adaptations I've ever seen!
If you're as huge of a fan of an author as I am of Jim Thompson, it can be pretty dodgy when their works are converted to film. This is not the case with Scott Foley's rendition of AFTER DARK MY SWEET. A suspenseful, sexually charged noir classic that closely follows and does great justice to the original text. Jason Patrick and Rachel Ward give possibly the best performances of their careers. And the always phenomenal Bruce Dern might have even toped him self with this one. Like Thompson's book this movie creates a dark and surreal world where passion overcomes logic and the double cross is never far at hand. A must see for all fans of great noir film. ****!!!
Airplane II: The Sequel (1982)
Twice as wacky, twice as fun
Far superior than the original, Airplane II blasts off with huge laughs and a quicker pace. The few gags that worked in the first movie return with even sharper timing. The first Airplane was a decent movie but think of it in terms as the prototype for Airplane II, a movie that learned from the mistakes of its predecessor and came back to the theaters even stronger. Nothing but good times from start to finish, and full frontal nudity as well.
Straight to Hell (1987)
Classic underrated comedy
This movie gets better everytime I see it. At first viewing I was unsure what to think, but it has quickly become one of my favorite comedies. See where Tarantino ripped the Jules character for pulp fiction from. See Carl the wiener boy rise up against his oppressors and become a man. Plus the damn Pougues are in it to. All of the actors involved, Sy Richardson, Dick rude, and the late great Joe Strummer all nail thier parts and Courtney love bugs like only courtney love can bug. If you like wacked out original comedy and you're a fan of the Simpsons or Family Guy than this movie is for you.
Zorro: The Gay Blade (1981)
classic
one of the most under rated comedies in years. The performances are fantastic, the dialog sharp, and the story - hilarious. If you can't laugh at zoro's gay brother stepping in to the hero's boots to help rid the country of tyranny, you need to take yourself less serious.
Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)
bubba delivers the goods
My title says it all. anyone who takes the time to seek this movie out( and seek it out you must) and doesn't enjoy it is a fool. I read a review where some was criticizing it for being a B movie--duh. Obviously it's a B movie, but it's also funny, suspensfull, and the most original movie I've seen in a long time. I would recommend this film to anyone who doesn't like the standard cookie cutter crap that passes for entertainment these days. Also bruce cambel rocks it and there is some really great camera work too.
