Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor (2022)
Thank God it's Over
Lazy writing
(Tegan falling to her death, but she's fine with no explanation)
(First forced regeneration took the Master an entire artificial planet and a uniquely rare stolen alien to do... Second time it took a handful of Cyber Masters)
(How did Graham get to the volcano?)
(Dan gets shot with a laser straight through his glass helmet... Not a single scratch on him)
(And so on, and so on).
Usual awful dialog ("Daleks... That's not good" *facepalm*) and sometimes painful acting. Ridiculous pacing and constant switching between scenes and emotional states (masters Rasputin dance was a sin against nature).
CGI that varied from OK to dreadful. And clothes regenerate now too?!
But, it was fun and interesting to see all the old doctors coming back. And the twist regeneration is indeed captivating.
Thank GOD Chibnal's era of destruction has come to a close. Russell will have a hell of a time stiching back together the ripped up lore. Good luck to him!
La commedia è finita!
Better Call Saul: Plan and Execution (2022)
The Slow Burning Fuse has set off the Dynamite
Actions have consequences.
The people giving this episode low reviews because of the "boring" Sandpiper plot evidently don't appreciate character development. Saul and Kim's intricate plan played out EXACTLY as they hoped, until fate turned against them.
Only by slowly, methodically building their plan against him do we come to realise how H. O. Ward was completely backed into a corner, and would have no choice but capitulate, and then to confront Saul and Kim. They KNEW he'd come to their apartment, but they didn't know the candle would blow twice.
Neither of them would EVER have wished death on Howard, but the fact is he would never have been in their apartment at that exact moment, had they not schemed against them.
Lalo may have pulled the trigger, but it was the Goodman's that killed Howard.
Exceptional writing, direction, acting, cinematography, score... Across the board brilliance that leaves me aching for the FINAL 6 episodes.
The dynamite has exploded: how much more will it set off?
What If...?: What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath? (2021)
What If... Dialogue didn't matter?
Why, WHY is this getting glowing reviews?!
The script feels like it was written by someone who has never interacted with another human before! You can't just have your characters announce how they feel... THAT MAKES ME FEEL ANGRY! And the brisk, predictable defeat of the baddie was more cringe than exciting.
The problem is deliberate though: this pandering mess was made with the soul (stone) purpose to make money by appeasing the greatest number of people. I may have thought the writing was pants, but the animation and effects were groovy.
They succeeded in sticking exactly in the middle ground: to comfortably turn out tripe, rather than dare to give us art!
5/10.
Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks (2021)
Wasted Concept
The Dalek vs "Dalek" concept was excellent. Very reminiscent of Remembrance of the Daleks, and overall it was well executed (exterminated), and thoughtfully brought into the 21st century with the AI concept, despite said AI never going rogue.
The battle was satisfyingly concluded: it was great to see the Doctor use her brain for once in defeating the enemy by tricking them and sending them to hell, plus it was really cool to see the Daleks swarm the TARDIS. Sadly, that is where the praise ends.
AWFUL dialogue, even by Chibnal standards. Couldn't be more on the nose if it were written by Pinocchio! Clunky, unnecessary, spoon feeding drivel.
I despise the character of Jack Robertson, not because he's an evil person but because of his unapologetic and face-palm-inducing parody of Trump. Chibnal once more going full SJW and thinking he must be so cutting edge and wise. I'm sure many people might think that, but to me it's just desperate, unimaginative, and boring.
Totally numb to the departure of Graham and Ryan: the dead weight has been cut! Shame it wasn't Graham who stayed.
The final and perhaps most henious point is the retcon of the Daleks. How can Chibnal et al expect us to not care about the fact the people of Earth and/or the UK don't remember or recognise the Daleks?! The Age of Steel, Doomsday, Journey's End, Victory of the Daleks etc etc. All retconed, it would seem.
Chibnal is the real Dalek, exterminating everything we've come to know and love about this once great show. I wonder how he will feel when all of his episodes are retconed? Assuming, of course, the show will survive his tenure.
We shall see.
TL;DR - Dalek vs "Dalek" was a great yet wasted concept. Chibnal continues to mutate the series into EastEnders with an alien here or there, and retcon everything great about the show. Is this sustainable? Who knows. *Who* nose.
Doctor Who: The Timeless Children (2020)
Time can be rewritten - 57 years worth!!
To alter so fundamentally the canon of the longest running sci-fi show in history, you have to have a bloody good reason for it! I waited with baited breath for that moment to come... And the episode ends, with no resolution.
As the doctor said at one point, "WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS?!" Why indeed. The fan theories I read in the run-up to this episode were almost all of a higher calibre and certainly more respectful to the lore than this 60 minute middle finger.
I think Chibnal sees this as the genesis of a new era for Doctor Who; I see it as its final episode. "The Doctor" died tonight: the idiot in a box just passing through and helping out has been replaced with an omnipotent, immortal God. This feels like some bad fan fiction, but like it or not this is canon now.
Fair well, Doctor. It was nice knowing you.
Doctor Who: Orphan 55 (2020)
Doctor Who Died Tonight
Spyfall, part 2: Gallifrey burned again! What a bombshell, can't wait to see the resolution! But there was no continuation, no explanation, no series-arc seeding. Just omnishabolic dialog, UNBEARABLY preachy messages (even though I personally concur with them!), and a plot with more twists and turns than a pile of wet spaghetti .
Gone are the days of compelling stories and characters, enthralling situations and tense decisions that made New Who so wonderful. It would seem the shallow characters, Deus ex Machinas, inconsequential plot advancements, and painfully preachy stale stories are here to stay. So I, for one, am not.
Farewell, Doctor. It was great while it lasted.
Doctor Who: Rosa (2018)
The worst antagonist of all time?!
This powerful and deeply relevant retelling of the courageous acts of Rosa Parks was an excellent historical drama from the sci-fi show Doctor Who, but would have been twice as good as a stand alone drama. The main downfall of this episode as its antagonist, Krasko (Josh Bowman). His motives - never explained. His defeat - laughably simple. This shallow, poorly-written baddie was doomed to be overshadowed by the true monsters of this episode - the townspeople of Montgomery, Alabama.
Jodie Whittaker once again demonstrated her ability to play a brilliant Doctor, and once again her talents were wasted by the show's new writer Chris Chibnall (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship... that guy) who seems more concerned with sloppy, lazy exposition than creating stories which captivate, or even entertain. Less characterisation, more dramatisation!!
